Welcome to National Meteor Watch Day!

'Unflappable' Swofford marks 20 years as ACC commissioner (dailypress.com; Teel)

When John Swofford became ACC commissioner, Dabo Swinney was coaching tight ends at Alabama, Nick Saban was struggling to break .500 at Michigan State and Lamar Jackson was in diapers.

Conference alignment? The ACC was nine schools strong, Louisville was competing in Conference USA and Virginia Techwas playing basketball in the Atlantic 10 and football in the Big East.

Football postseason? Precursor to the Bowl Championship Series, the Bowl Alliance was entering its final season. The Big Ten and Pacific 10 did not participate, its champions still contracted to the Rose Bowl.

Suffice to say, much has changed since July 1, 1997, the day Swofford succeeded Gene Corrigan as commissioner. And no matter how much you miss the convenience, comfort and round-robin scheduling of the compact ACC, no matter how much you lament the increasing dependence on television revenue, this is irrefutable:

As the Swofford Era hits 20 years Saturday, the 15-member ACC is at the national forefront like never before. More important, the league is positioned to remain there.

Setbacks, hiccups and doubts? Gracious, yes. Then and now.

4-star Cole Swider Commitment Primer (vuhoops.com; Lane)

A big domino falls this afternoon on the Villanova basketball recruiting board as 4-star forward Cole Swider will make his college commitment. Feel free to use this as your open thread leading up to the decision.

Here’s the need to know on Swider’s impending commitment.

Time: 3:30pm ET

Location: Sage Gym at St. Andrew’s School (Barrington, R.I.)

Live Stream: will be added if/when available

What To Expect: Swider has played his recruitment extremely close to the vest, which can be a bit maddening for the die-hard recruitniks but makes for a suspenseful announcement. Those are pretty hard to come by in this day and age - Jalen Brunson is the last ‘Nova verbal where we legitimately didn’t know in the days leading up.

While he visited Villanova unofficially twice during the past season, Swider opted not to return to the Main Line for an official visit. He did officially visit his other three finalists - Duke, Xavier and Syracuse - in the past week and a half.

That schedule made Villanova fans feel like they were on the outside looking in, but as of Thursday night all the momentum is going Villanova’s way. The 247 Crystal Ballhas shifted from Duke to Villanova (led by the Duke writers no less!) and we are hearing that this could very well be a great day to be a Wildcat.

Lakeview Amphitheater steadily improving with age (Editorial) (PS; Editorial)

Onondaga County's Lakeview Amphitheater is growing up fast. One by one, the Amp's temporary fixtures are being replaced by permanent ones, giving the place a more settled vibe and concertgoers a better experience.

It's easy to forget just how new the place is. The $49.3 million amphitheater on the west shore of Onondaga Lake was built in less than a year. It opened on Sept. 3, 2015, for one show featuring country megastar Miranda Lambert. The Amp hosted a full slate of 22 shows in 2016.

Its second full season kicked off last weekend with the Zac Brown Band and Bob Dylan on consecutive nights. Third Eye Blind performs Friday. On the Fourth of July, Symphoria and the Syracuse Pops Chorus will entertain with popular and patriotic music, followed by fireworks.

In all, 21 shows are scheduled over the summer, with one more in the works.

The Amphitheater certainly has had growing pains: The traffic, especially during the adjacent New York State Fair. The unpaved, dusty parking lots. Complaints about difficult access for people with mobility challenges. The high-priced concessions. The lack of direct access from the lake.
