Welcome to Barbie Doll Day!

Barbie Doll Day marks the anniversary of the day that the Barbie doll first went on sale in 1959. Barbie was thought up by Ruth Handler, wife of one of Mattel's founders, Elliot Handler. Handler noticed her daughter, Barbara, gave adult roles to paper dolls when she played with them. In 1956, Handler bought three German Lilli dolls while vacationing in Switzerland, and used them as inspiration in creating the Barbie doll upon returning back to California. On March 9, 1959, Barbie made its debut at the American International Toy Fair in New York City, which became Barbie's birthday, and also Barbie Day.

Syracuse Basketball Will Participate In The 2018 2K Classic - Armchair All-Americans (armchairallamericans.com; Weisleder)

The Syracuse Basketball team continued to schedule tough non-ACC games this afternoon.

According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, the Syracuse Orange will be one of four teams competing in the 2K Classic at Madison Square Garden in 2018.

The other four teams listed are Iowa, Connecticut, and Oregon. The tournament is short and sweet: The two winners of the first game meet in the finals, while the two losers compete for third place.

— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) September 5, 2017

Syracuse’ most recent involvement in the tournament came in 2014 when they lost to California.

Aside from that, the Orange’ history in the tournament is bright, having won it in 2009, 2004, and making a finals appearance in 2005.

The 2018 2K Classic will mark the fourth consecutive season in which Syracuse and the UConn Huskies play each other.

Two seasons ago, the Orange took care of the Huskies in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament. Last year, the Huskies got revenge in the Tire Pro Classic. They will play each other this coming December at Madison Square Garden, in the Jimmy V Classic. And in a years time, the two will meet in the 2K Classic.

ACC Basketball: Breaking down the 2017-18 star on each team in the conference (bustingbrackets.com; Harkins)

ACC basketball is among the best in the entire country. Who are the stars on each team in the conference heading into the 2017-18 season?

Every season, ACC basketball takes up several spots in the preseason top-25. That will be no different this upcoming season. In fact, Notre Dame, Miami, North Carolina, Louisville, and Duke are all ranked in my preseason top-25, which was updated after the NBA Draft in late June (Quick update: With the signing of Marvin Bagley, Duke would jump to #1 in these rankings).

With all of these teams taking up major headlines, it is important to note the stars that each of these teams has. It is impossible to win a conference or national title without star players, and the ACC is not short on stars. Each team has several top players who can take over games in the clutch and each of these players will make highlight plays this season.

In the past several years, we have seen a ton of talent come through the ACC as “one-and-done” players and we will once again, but no freshman are considered for this list of the top star on every team in the conference. As we do not know how easily these players will translate their game to the collegiate level, only returning players are considered to be stars on their respective teams.

For these stars, there are several questions entering this season: Which players will be able to carry their team to the NCAA Tournament? Which players will have their team contending for a conference title this year? Which players can assert themselves as National Player of the Year candidates? And, of the course, the most important question of all: Can this star lead his team to the National Championship?

Let’s take a look at each ACC team’s star and how far they might able to take their team during the 2017-18 campaign.

Onondaga County votes to pour $4.5 million into Syracuse Crunch's War Memorial (PS; Kramer)

The Syracuse Crunch will be getting a new scoreboard and a whole lot more.

While that was really never in doubt, the Onondaga County Legislature made it official on Tuesday by unanimously voting to approve $4.5 million in bonds for improvements to the Crunch's aging War Memorial.

That money is expected to be complemented by $4 million in state funds and money raised by hikes in ticket user surcharges for War Memorial events to complete a long punch list of much-needed upgrades in the building during the next few seasons.

But first up is a new War Memorial scoreboard and marquee system for the Oncenter complex. The $1 million scoreboard system was expected to be ready by the Crunch's home opener on Oct. 7, but Bill Fisher, deputy county executive, said that timetable might have to be nudged back slightly.

"We wanted to make sure that the legislators had complete information. Once we understood that we would need to bond for part of that money, that put things off a little bit,'' Fisher said Tuesday. "It may be the case that we're not ready to go on day one. But that will depend on the final contract and what the vendor is willing to commit to. It would be asking a lot of the vendor for them to deliver it in time for the first game. But the contract literally has not been finalized. So I can't rule it out until SMG and a selected vendor finalize their contract.''
