Welcome to Barbie Doll Day!

Barbie Doll Day marks the anniversary of the day that the Barbie doll first went on sale in 1959. Barbie was thought up by Ruth Handler, wife of one of Mattel's founders, Elliot Handler. Handler noticed her daughter, Barbara, gave adult roles to paper dolls when she played with them. In 1956, Handler bought three German Lilli dolls while vacationing in Switzerland, and used them as inspiration in creating the Barbie doll upon returning back to California. On March 9, 1959, Barbie made its debut at the American International Toy Fair in New York City, which became Barbie's birthday, and also Barbie Day. But, Barbie did not make its debut in stores until September 6. The first Barbie wore a black and white swimsuit, had the full name of Barbara Millicent Roberts, and was available with either blonde or brunette hair.

Barry Jacobs On This Year’s ACC Basketball Coaches (dukebasketballreport.com; King)

The ACC has a new pair of head coaches this season, Jeff Capel at Pitt and Louisville’s Chris Mack. Unlike last year, when there were also two newcomers, both Mack and Capel are upgrades from their predecessors -- great gets in their 40s with ACC assistant’s experience and nine prosperous years each running their own show in a high-powered conference.

Capel previously was a head coach at VCU and Oklahoma, posting a .596 winning percentage (162-110) from 2003 through 2011. He had another 13 victories vacated at OU as part of an NCAA punishment. Add the negated Ws and his career winning mark is .614.

Three of Capel’s squads made the NCAAs. The 2009 Sooners, led by Blake Griffin, that year’s AP player of the year, advanced to the Elite 8, losing to eventual champ North Carolina.

His new school incidentally also made the ’09 regional finals under Jamie Dixon, matching the ’74 squad for the program’s deepest NCAA penetration.

Capel of course played at Duke from 1994-97 and assisted Mike Krzyzewski from 2012-18. During his stint as an assistant Capel spearheaded recruiting that landed the Blue Devils several No. 1 classes and a 2015 national title.

Big East Basketball: Top returning shooters in the conference for 2018-19 (Bustingbrackets.com; Harkins)

3-point shooting and floor spacing are paramount to success in college basketball. With regards to Big East basketball, here are the top returning shooters.

Floor spacing is paramount to success in today’s era of basketball. Quite simply, it is nearly impossible to be a strong overall team without keeping several 3-point shooting threats on the floor at all times. It seems as though the best teams in the country year in and year out are those that can both defend at an elite level as well as cash in from distance. With this being said, the top snipers in the country are incredibly important to their respective teams.

In regards to Big East basketball, the conference had to say goodbye to some tremendous shooters this offseason due to graduations and NBA Draft decisions. Yet, this does not mean that all of the top 3-point threats are no longer in the league. Overall, the Big East ranked tops in the country in free throw percentage (75.5) and fifth in 3-point percentage (36.2%) last season and there are plenty of shooters returning for this year. Considering this, let’s take a look at five of the best 3-point shooters coming back for this season.

In order to be considered for this list, a player needed to attempt at least 50 3-pointers last season. While this does eliminate several players, this cutline is used to show a reasonable sample size of shots from distance. Now, without further ado, let’s jump into the list of Big East basketball’s top 3-point shooters. (All statistics are via Sports-Reference and from the 2017-18 season.)
