Welcome to Abet and Aid Punsters Day!

Abet and Aid punsters day is a day to make bad puns, and to encourage others to do the same. Instead of groaning at puns, which often happens, the day is to be spent laughing at them, like you would any other joke.

Puns, also known as paronomasia, are a type of wordplay that uses similar sounding or looking words, or figurative language, to create an oftentimes humorous effect. Puns have been around for millennia, being used in Sumerian cuneiform, and Egyptian and Mayan hieroglyphics. Today they are common in jokes and comedy shows, and are often used in literature.

Syracuse men’s basketball opponent preview: What to know about Morehead State (DO; Heyen)

Syracuse (1-0) opened the 2018-19 season in convincing fashion with a 66-34 win over Eastern Washington. The Orange were led by 20 points from Oshae Brissett and strong-pressure defense. Next up for SU: host Morehead State (1-0) on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Eagles opened the season with a 102-82 win over Kentucky Christian, a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics school. The NAIA is a small colleges equivalent of the NCAA. Morehead State takes on Connecticut on Thursday night before traveling to Syracuse.

Here’s what to know about the Eagles.

All-time series: Syracuse leads, 2-0

Last time they played: The Orange beat Morehead State, 110-69, on Dec. 28, 1987. Then-junior Sherman Douglas led the way for Syracuse with 29 points. Rony Seikaly added 15 rebounds. The two schools first met in the 1983 NCAA Tournament, and SU won by 15.

The Morehead State report: In Morehead State’s opener against NAIA opposition, four Eagles scored in double figures: De’von Cooper, Malek Green, A.J. Hicks and Jordan Walker. Last year, Hicks and Walker were the two leading scorers for Morehead State.

The Eagles pose less of a threat from 3-point land than Eastern Washington, as Morehead State made 32.3 percent from beyond the arc last year. That’s not offset with much size. Russian freshman Sasha Sukhanov is 6-foot-11, but no other Eagles player is taller than 6-foot-7. Sukhanov tied for the second-fewest minutes on Morehead State in its opening win, so he may not factor into the rotation much against Syracuse.

The Final Word: Beat writers discuss Syracuse’s season-opening win over Eastern Washington (DO; podcast; Staff)

Syracuse (1-0) got off to an easy start to the season on Tuesday night in the Carrier Dome, dispatching Eastern Washington (0-1), 66-34. The Orange were led by 20 points from Oshae Brissett and stingy pressure defense. Jalen Carey, a freshman point guard for SU, also made his debut after sitting out the two exhibition games.

Our beat writers discussed that and more on The Final Word.

Hall of Famer, Syracuse Men’s Basketball Coach Jim Boeheim Seeks to “Rectify” Greensboro Spat, Will Speak at 2019 Fred Barakat Sports Dinner (greensboro.com)

Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer and longtime Syracuse University men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim will be the featured speaker for the 2019 Fred Barakat Sports Dinner benefitting the Matt Brown Learn-to-Swim Endowment, the Greensboro Sports Council announced today. Founded in 2008, The Fred Barakat Sports Dinner was renamed in 2011 in memory of the late associate commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The 2019 event is set for Thursday, May 16 on the Greensboro Coliseum arena floor.

Boeheim, 73, has been open in his support of the ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament being played in New York City or other large markets. After losing his first-round game in the ACC Tournament played in Brooklyn, N.Y in 2017, he reiterated his support of large markets hosting the tournament during his postgame news conference which drew a swift response from the City of Greensboro Twitter account and multiple Piedmont Triad media outlets. The topic came up again during Boeheim’s Oct. 24 interview on the David Glenn Show which originated at ACC Operation Basketball in Charlotte:

“I know Greensboro’s mad at me, and I’m trying to rectify that,” Boeheim told David Glenn. “I like Greensboro. I just think the tournament should be in a big city, but that’s just me. I could be wrong. Actually, I’d rather go to Greensboro because it’s easier to get to the game and back than in all the other bigger cities because you have to fight all the traffic. The game is the game; you play on the court, and that doesn’t change. I like the ACC, I like Greensboro, and I like restaurants in the south. Most of my recommendations on restaurants are in the south now, and I have a lot of them.”

“This event continues to be a terrific event for the city of Greensboro as it celebrates the life of Fred Barakat, raises money for a worthy cause, and brings our community together,” ACC Commissioner John Swofford said. “Having Jim Boeheim as the featured speaker is fitting as the 2020 ACC Men’s Basketball Tournament returns to the Greensboro Coliseum, a place where so much of its history took place.”

With Syracuse Football and Basketball Thriving, Whose Ranking Will Peak Higher? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Aki)

It’s been quite some time since there was a sense of optimism this high for Syracuse athletics. In fact, you have to flash back to 2001 to find the last time both SU basketball and football were ranked teams. But after last week’s College Football Playoff reveal and the preseason AP basketball poll, both Orange squads are inside their respective top 25s. After last night’s CFP show slotted SU as the 13th best team in the country and hoops checking in at 16 to start the season, both teams have a chance to solidify itself as elite programs in their respective sports. With that being said, which team’s ranking will peak higher?

The Case for Basketball:

Syracuse was dominant defensively in its opener against Eastern Washington. It doesn’t matter who you’re playing against or where they’re traveling from, holding a team to just 10 points in a half is out of this world good. The Orange defense is clearly one of the elites in the country, but the offense has some catching up to do. They missed a lot of shots against EWU, but those should start falling as the season progresses. The ceiling of this team is a national title contender, but the tournament is a massive fluke and doesn’t always crown the best team. The Orange also has a gauntlet of an ACC slate by doubling up with Duke and Clemson. The conference schedule may be too tough to truly elevate Syracuse high into the top 10, but the Orange certainly has the potential to break into the backend of the top 10. The schedule gives them opportunities to win a lot of games early on (including a potential marquee matchup with Oregon) as well as big rankings shifting matchups in ACC play.

The Case for Football:

We never thought the Orange would get to this point, but alas, this is why they play the games. Syracuse is a Notre Dame win away from becoming a top 7 team in the country with a chance to move up if they can double down and win against a ranked Boston College team. Teams ahead of Syracuse are going to lose. That’s not a hypothetical, it’s a given fact because of conference championships. The Orange can rise a spot or two with a dominating win against Louisville, but at the end of the day it all hinges on what SU does against Notre Dame. If Syracuse can beat Notre Dame (which is certainly in the cards), they will be the top dog amongst Orange sports.

Syracuse Basketball: Orange’s versatility on display versus EW (itlh.com; Adler)

The Syracuse basketball squad notched its first conquest of the young 2018-19 stanza on Tuesday night, demonstrating its critical depth.

Well, folks, that proved a pretty ugly affair to kick off the 2018-19 term.

Even so, I’m beyond ecstatic that the SU hoops outfit secured an easy home victory over Eastern Washington on Tuesday evening. The Eagles proved no match for the Orange, as our beloved boys cruised to a 66-34 conquest.

Heck, EW only had 10 points after the first half concluded. The Eagles are a relatively strong shooting team from downtown, but the ‘Cuse defense had a stellar performance. Our vaunted 2-3 zone forced Eastern Washington into so many long attempts from 3-point land, with the bevy of them clanging off the rim.

The 34 points produced by the Eagles represent the fewest amount ever in a game during the Carrier Dome’s storied history. Wow.

ACC Debuts Aren’t Always As Successful As This Year (dukebasketballreport.com; Jacobs)

With 15 ACC teams it would be difficult to go through a series of season openers without a stumble or two. Or three, as it turned out last season.

This year the real possibility of defeat was present in two games against elite clubs. The rest were relatively easy debuts, although Wake’s opening loss to Georgia Southern last November shows the tenuousness of such assumptions.

Duke faced Kentucky and defeated the Wildcats with surprising ease, 118-84, on Nov. 6 in the Champions Classic at Indianapolis, a neutral court in name only that’s about 190 miles from the UK campus. (Think Duke playing Kentucky in Charlotte.) In what might pass for the season-opening, big-name doubleheader some crave in college basketball to match football, Kansas faced Michigan State in the earlier, 7PM game.

Down in Tallahassee on the same day, Florida visited Florida State in an annual rivalry contest that could have quickly test FSU’s ability to follow up on last year’s Elite Eight advance. Didn’t happen as Florida State beat the Gators handily, 81-60.

ACC Roundup (dukebasketballreport.com; King)

Guess who’s coming to dinner? Jim Boeheim and Greensboro might be burying the hatchet a bit as Buddy’s dad (thought we’d be the first) will be speaking at the at the 2019 Fred Barakat Banquet at Greensboro Coliseum this spring.

For free.

No truth to the rumor that the ACC will be flying food in from New York.

Actually, we’d be curious to know what Boeheim thinks of the food scene in Durham which has gotten pretty big-time in recent years. In fact, probably a lot better than Syracuse.

In Raleigh, the Technician has an ACC package up.

Buzzketball? Well okay.

Florida State’s big win over Florida may have been a bit of a surprise but that defense? Not a surprise. Duke beat Kentucky by 34 but FSU had a 35 point lead on the Gators. So: ACC>SEC.

Jeff Capel led Pitt to a nice ceremonial farewell to the Kevin Stallings era, debuting a team that has significantly more athleticism. And so does the radio crew: check out Duke legend Dick Groat, now a magnificent 88 years old, but still with great reflexes.

Seriously, that’s both quick and confident. He was ready to catch Xavier Johnson and wasn’t flinching. And he’s 88!

SU alum turns Chainsmokers song into movie; 'Shrek' reboot: Buzz (PS; Herbert)

SU alum turning Chainsmokers song into movie

Syracuse University alumnus Drew Taggart and his bandmate Alex Pall are turning one of The Chainsmokers' songs into a movie. Billboard reports the "Closer" duo will produce a film based on their 2017 hit "Paris," with Mickey Rapkin ("Pitch Perfect") writing the screenplay. "The age of being only a musician is over and we're excited to go all-in on this venture to curate, produce and create meaningful projects," Taggart and Pall said in a statement, referring to a deal with Entertainment 360 and Tri-Star Pictures.

There's no word on a cast, director or plot. The song focuses on a young couple getting away from parents, sharing a moment on the terrace in the French city: "If we go down, then we go down together," Taggart sings with Emily Warren.

'Shrek' reboot

A "Shrek" reboot is in the works, because there's apparently more layers of the onion to peel. Variety reports "Despicable Me" creator Chris Meledandri is reviving the animated ogre, as well as planning a new "Puss 'n' Boots" movie. Illumination chief Chris Meledandri told the publication that he plans to bring back the original cast, which included Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, John Lithgow and Antonio Banderas. "The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it's not simply yet another film in a series of sequels," he said, suggesting the animation will get a different look -- possibly like the new "Grinch" movie starring Benedict Cumberbatch.
