NATIONAL-HAIKU-POETRY-DAY-%E2%80%93-April-17-768x384.png

Welcome to International Haiku Poetry Day!

Observed annually on April 17, National Haiku Poetry Day encourages all to try their hand in creativity. Haiku poetry is a form of Japanese poetry that is non-rhyming and normally consists of 3 lines with a syllable pattern of 5-7-5. Haiku poems are usually inspired by an element of nature, a season, a moment of beauty or an individual experience or event. Sensory language is used to capture a feeling or image.

Richard Wright (1908-1960)

English haiku does not always follow the strict syllable count found in Japanese haiku. The typical length of haiku found in English language journals is 10-14 syllables, versus the 5-7-5 syllables used in the Japanese language.

Carrier Dome roof renovation will improve natural lighting ‘a little bit’ (PS; Carlson)

The amount of natural light coming into the Carrier Dome won’t be much different following Syracuse University’s renovation than it is currently, Vice President and Chief Facilities Officer Pete Sala said last week.

Increasing the amount of natural light in the building had been mentioned throughout the university’s conversations about the building over the past three years, but the school had to adjust its plans as it went about ensuring the building would be suitable for football, basketball and a variety of other activities.

“(Basketball) was exactly what we talked about,” Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack said. “Your concern is glare, right? You get too much glare in the afternoon at a basketball game and obviously that can impact shooting. That clearly is a factor in what we ultimately decided to do there.”

That’s likely the biggest change to the school’s renovation project, which officials say remains largely on track and unchanged from their most recent announcement last May. Wildhack says the changes will make the building the best sports venue between “New York and Toronto."

Syracuse Basketball: 2019 report card for SU alum in the NBA (itlh.com; Mlodzinski)

The NBA Playoffs are upon us! What does that mean? It’s time to grade all of the former Syracuse basketball players who played in the NBA this season.

It definitely was not the best season for former Syracuse basketball ballers in the Association. In fact, it might be regarded as one of the worst. Of course, Carmelo Anthony’s breakup with the Houston Rockets tops it all. Melo barely lasted 10 games with Mike D’Antoni at the helm – we should have seen that coming.

However, it’s more so the fact that he didn’t get picked up later on in the season by a team trying to make a playoff run. As of now, Melo is still a free agent on the market. But, there is a chance that we’ve already witnessed the former NBA scoring champion play in his last professional game.

To add insult to injury, quite literally was Dion Waiters this season. ‘Philly cheese’ was supposed to return early in the season, but this was pushed back a few months, and Waiters never really got going until the last few weeks of the season.

Syracuse Targets Five Star Terrence Clarke – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Leonard)

If you don’t know the name Terrence Clarke by now, you will soon. Jim Boehiem and Gerry McNamara visited the 6-6 five star guard this weekend in New Hampshire.

Clarke is only a sophomore and a member of the 2021 class but the Orange have been after him for awhile now and already made an offer. He’s currently ranked third in the ESPN Top 25 for that class and more importantly he plays for a high school you might recognize: Brewster Academy.

Taurean Thompson, Buddy Boeheim, CJ Fair, and the last Syracuse five star recruit from the 2014 class, Chris McCullough, all played high school ball at Brewster Academy. Clarke grew up in the Boston area and transferred to Brewster for this year so he didn’t play with Buddy at all last year.

Offers: Georgetown, Indiana, NC State, Syracuse, Wake Forest, UCONN, Iowa

U.Va. completes ACC's dominant NCAA tournament decade (dailypress.com; Teel)

Virginia, North Carolina, Duke. Three national championships, won by different programs, shoehorned into five seasons. The Blue Devils in 2015, Tar Heels in ’17 and Cavaliers this year.

As if ACC men’s basketball needed another bragging point.

The NCAA tournament began in 1939, and only twice has a league produced three different national champs in a five-year stretch: The ACC from 2001-05 with Duke, Maryland and North Carolina, and the ACC from 2015-19.

And unlike many accomplishments trumpeted by conferences of late, this isn’t a byproduct of expansion and/or realignment. Duke, Carolina and Maryland were charter ACC members, and Virginia joined the league in December 1953, seven months after its formation.

Moreover, national titles only begin to convey the ACC’s postseason success, especially from 2015-19. An NCAA record six teams from the conference reached the 2016 tournament’s regional semifinals, a.k.a. the Sweet 16, and five did so this March.

ACC Football Rx: NCAA Tournament Results, 2014-19 (RX; HM)

NCAA Tournament Results, 2014-19

NCAA money

Inspired by "NCAAT records 2014-2019" posted by ken d on CSNBBS.
source: NCAAT records 2014-2019
The following data comes from an analysis of NCAA tournament results over the past six seasons. That time frame was selected because that is the period over which tournament units are spread. After this year, the results from the 2014 tournament should drop off and be replaced by the 2020 results.
These are the W-L records and units earned for every conference with more than 10 tournament wins.
Conference W-L W% Units
ACC 80-41 66 117
WCC 17-10 63 26
SEC 52-31 63 82
Big Ten 60-39 61 97
MVC 12-8 60 20
Pac-12 34-27 56 61
Big XII 49-40 55 88
Big East 32-30 52 60
American 17-18 49 34
A-10 11-20 35 31

The ACC has a win% that's 3 points higher than the next best conference, which is NOT the Big Ten by the way. The ACC's units, while leading the rest, may actually be less than what it should based on that win% (e.g. this year the Big Ten got more teams into the NCAA Tournament than the ACC - even though the ACC had a better win% AND won the national championship - again).

College basketball team grades for 2018–19 season (SI; Single and Geary)

Put down your pencils, everyone. The tests are over and our final report card is in, handing out 2018–19 season grades for every Power 5 team, plus the Big East and 16 other notable teams outside those conferences. These grades take into account a number of factors, and each team is weighed relative to its own realistic expectations. For example, a team that had a goal of making the NCAA tournament will be judged differently than one that was predicted to finish in the bottom tier of its league, and a team that had Final Four or national title aspirations won't be viewed the same as one that spent some of the year ranked but likely was never going to contend for a championship. That doesn't mean you get an "A" simply for overachieving—but it does mean a team could miss the tournament and still fare decently here. We also weighed where teams fell in SI's preseason 1–353 rankings and how their November perception changed over the course of the season.

Pyramid says it’s committed to Destiny USA ‘for decades to come’ (PS; Moriarty)

Despite recent financial struggles, Destiny USA’s owner says customer traffic at the giant Syracuse shopping mall remains strong and it’s committed to operating the center for “decades to come.”

“The property is an important employment driver in the Syracuse area and an economic catalyst for the region,” Pyramid Management Group said in a statement Tuesday. “We look forward to continuing that success over the coming years and remain committed to ensuring the health, vibrancy and longevity of the center for decades to come.”

“Customer traffic at Destiny USA remains very strong and Pyramid is well positioned to move the property forward,” it said.
Pyramid issued the statement in response to reports that it may default on $430 million in mortgage loans on the 2.4 million-square-foot mall on the southern shore of Onondaga Lake when they come due in June.

The Wall Street Journal says the mall may not be able to pay its mortgage when it comes due in June

The company said in a statement to syracuse.com that it is current on all mortgage payments but is negotiating with the debt administrator to extend the loan.
