Welcome to National Doughnut Day!

National Doughnut Day, also known as National Donut Day, is an annual event that was started by the Chicago branch of the Salvation Army, first being held in 1938. It was created to honor the "Lassies," "Doughnut Girls," or "Doughnut Dollies" who had served doughnuts to servicemen in Europe during World War I. The aim of the day was also to be a fundraiser for Chicago's Salvation Army, in order to help the many people who were suffering on account of the Great Depression.

During World War I, the Salvation Army sent about 250 women volunteers who became known as "Doughnut Dollies" to France. They worked in "huts" near the front lines, where baked goods, supplies, and stamps were available, as were services for mending clothes. As it was hard to get most fresh baked goods this close to the front lines, doughnuts were chosen. At times they were even fried in helmets! The Salvation Army reintroduced the giving out of doughnuts during World War II, and members of the Red Cross gave them out as well. Today, the day is still a fundraiser for the Salvation Army in many places, and the organization teams up with various doughnut shops on the day. Some places also give out free doughnuts today.

Syracuse’s Tyus Battle enters 2019 NBA draft more mature, more prepared (PS; Waters)

One year ago, Tyus Battle merely tested the waters of the NBA draft.

Taking advantage of the NCAA’s relaxation of rules for underclassmen, Battle entered his name in the draft. He participated in the NBA Combine in Chicago. He worked out with NBA teams and spent a lot of time working with noted trainer Drew Hanlen.

Then, he decided to return to Syracuse University for his junior year.

“I didn’t really decide until right up to the end,’’ Battle said in a telephone interview on Thursday.

This year, Battle didn’t just test the waters. Despite having one year of eligibility remaining, there was never any doubt that he would leave Syracuse.

Even though he averaged 17.2 points per game with a much-improved field goal shooting percentage, Battle finds himself fighting an uphill climb on the mock drafts.

Battle’s draft stock might not be any higher than it was a year ago, but he believes he is more prepared for the current process and whatever comes after the NBA draft is held on June 20.

“Last year, I didn’t really know what to expect,’’ Battle said. “Going into this year, I’m more prepared. I feel like I know what’s going to come up in these workouts.’’

What we know about Syracuse men's basketball 2019 schedule (DO; Schafer)

Syracuse will host Iowa on Tuesday, Dec. 3 in the Carrier Dome. The nonconference matchup is part of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. Syracuse has won its matchup in the challenge in each of its last two seasons with wins over Maryland (2017) and Ohio State (2018).

Iowa returns three starters from last season in which it finished 23-12. The Hawkeyes lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament against Tennessee, 83-77.

Syracuse returns one player (Elijah Hughes) who started more than six games. Iowa’s top-returning scorer, forward Luke Garza, averaged 13.1 points per game and 4.5 rebounds while Hughes 13.7 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.

Syracuse men's basketball will be traveling to Italy for 10 days in August to play four exhibition games. The games will be against Italian select teams in Vedano Olona, Vincenza, Siena and Rome.

This will be the first time Syracuse has traveled internationally since 2013.

Iowa basketball: Hawks get early test in B1G/ACC Challenge (dearoldgold.com; Sikes)

The Iowa basketball team will be heading to the Carrier Dome to face a solid Syracuse Orange team in the B1G/ACC Challenge.

Remember the last time a Hawkeyes team was in the Carrier Dome? The football team stopped Syracuse eight consecutive times at the goal line in double overtime to preserve a 20-13 win in September 2006.

The Iowa basketball time will try to repeat that performance in a sense when they square off against Jim Boeheim‘s Syracuse squad in early December.

It will mark the first time the two teams have met since Syracuse edged Iowa 66-63 in the 2014 2K Classic.

Last season, the Hawkeyes knocked off Pittsburgh at Carver-Hawkeye Arena 69-68 in the B1G/ACC Challenge. Syracuse beat a solid Ohio State team in Columbus 72-62. Syracuse will be returning four-star point guard Jalen Carey who played in 25 games last year (starting 2 of them). He averaged just 3.5 points-per-game last season but expects to be a full-time starter this year.

Syracuse will also be returning Elijah Hughes who averaged 13.7 points-per-game and started all 34 games. He is a terrific perimeter threat as he averaged nearly 7 three-pointers a game last year.

Syracuse Basketball: Elijah Hughes will contend for Julius Erving Award (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball star Elijah Hughes has an opportunity to shine as one of the nation’s premier forwards during the 2019-20 campaign.

In his first stint seeing court time with the Syracuse basketball squad, by and large, Elijah Hughes delivered a solid 2018-19 term.

Though a tad inconsistent, Hughes, the former East Carolina transfer, averaged about 33 minutes per contest while tallying 13.7 points, good for second-highest on the ‘Cuse crew, to go along with 4.3 rebounds.

He connected on a solid 42 percent from the field, 36.9 percent from 3-point range, and 74.2 percent from the charity stripe. As the lone starter who will return in 2019-20, and with two stanzas of eligibility remaining, I expect Hughes to soar to even greater heights in the upcoming season. In my humble opinion, I think that Hughes has to focus less on attempts from downtown, and more on driving the lane with aggression.

He showed flashes of terrific athleticism in 2018-19, and clearly, Hughes will assume a huge part of the Orange’s offense in a few short months. I also believe that he must demonstrate a significant leadership role, as the SU roster in 2019-20 is definitely deep, but it does boast five freshmen and waved bye-bye to Tyus Battle and Oshae Brissett, who are heading to the pros.

The 6-foot-6 Hughes is conceivably primed for a break-out year, and that includes getting consideration for the Julius Erving Award, which is doled out annually to the best small forward across Division I men’s hoops.

This past April, Gonzaga’s Rui Hachimura hoisted that hardware. Other recent winners, prior to Hachimura, are Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart of Villanova, Michigan State’s Denzel Valentine, and Arizona’s Stanley Johnson.

On Wednesday, NCAA.com correspondent Andy Katz, who really knows his stuff, published his top-25 candidates to claim this trophy in 2019-20. Hughes, I’m happy to report, checks in at No. 15.

Top storylines for 2019 Big Ten/ACC Challenge matchups (SI; Gladstone)

For the 21st consecutive season, two of the nation's premier conferences will go head-to-head, and as always, there are plenty of top-tier matchups as well as intriguing storylines. The 2019 Big Ten/ACC Challenge (or ACC/Big Ten Challenge, as it is called in even-numbered years) will feature 14 games spread across three days in the start of December.

The full 2019 matchups are below:
...
...
With five of the teams in the top 10 of SI.com's latest 2019–20 preseason rankings involved, including a potential top-five battle between Duke and Michigan State, we dived into the biggest storylines of this year's edition.

Run It Back
Three of the 14 contests are rematches from last season (though not necessarily from the Challenge), not to mention a reprise of the 2013 national title game between Michigan and Louisville. Wolverine fans will be looking for revenge against a Cardinal team that was later stripped of that title, but the real teams that will be out for vengeance are the Blue Devils and Purdue. Duke gets to make its first trip to East Lansing since 2003, when JJ Redick and Shelden Williams were running the show for it. Coach K has only lost twice to Tom Izzo, but the most recent defeat came in March, when the Spartans held on for a 68–67 win to get to the Final Four and stun the top overall seed.

And speaking of Elite Eight rematches, Virginia will go to Purdue to rehash what might've been the most fun game of the entire 2019 NCAA tournament. Sure, there will be no Carsen Edwards nor Kyle Guy nor Ty Jerome, but Mamadi Diakite will get at least one more chance to remind the Boilermakers of the time he robbed them of their first Final Four appearance since 1980.

Michigan at Louisville, meanwhile pits the surprise team of last season against a potential sleeper this year (although the expectations for the Cardinals are already going through the roof). Neither of the coaches from 2013 are still around, with Rick Pitino somewhere in Greece and John Beilein now in Cleveland, but the Cardinals do have a potential ACC Player of the Year candidate in Jordan Nwora and boast one of the best venues in all of college basketball.

How Apizza Regionale makes fresh mozzarella daily (video) (PS; video' Tulloch)

One of the key ingredients in Apizza Regionale’s pies is the restaurant’s house mozzarella.

It’s a time-consuming process to prepare fresh mozzarella each day, but back-of-house manager Mitchell Mullen-Khanzadian says “it’s absolutely worth it.”

“We do so much stuff fresh; you know, there’s just no cutting corners,” said Mullen-Khanzadian. “The results speak for themselves.”

Apizza locally sources its dairy from 2 Kids Goat Farm in Cuyler, N.Y. The cheese is placed in hot, salty water to melt, knead and stretch with a long paddle. They keep the leftover water and whey to make house ricotta.

The water needs to be just under boiling to give the cheese a soft, silky texture. They stretch the cheese over and over, "until it all looks almost like plastic or taffy.”

Afterward, staffers rip off pieces to mold into spheres, each one larger than a fist. They’re placed in a cold brine bath to add flavor and preserve their shape for easy slicing.

Happy National Dairy Month, Syracuse.

"Syracuse will also be returning Elijah Hughes who averaged 13.7 points-per-game and started all 34 games. He is a terrific perimeter threat as he averaged nearly 7 three-pointers a game last year. "

Really?

Enjoyed that article on Tyus. Hopefully he shows well in his workouts because I have no doubt that Tyus the person will make a great impression in any interviews with the teams. Easy kid to cheer for.
