Welcome to Patriot Day!

The largest terrorist attack in American history took place on September 11, 2001, when four planes were hijacked. Two crashed into the World Trade Center, one into the Pentagon, and one into a field in Pennsylvania, after passengers tried to stop the hijackers from using the plane as a weapon. Following this tragedy, the American people displayed a sense of patriotism and pride for their country, and stood united to help their fellow citizens. It was also in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy that President George W. Bush issued a proclamation designating September 14, 2001, as a national day of prayer for those who had lost their lives in the attack. Congress then worked to make September 11 a national day of mourning. A joint resolution was passed by the House of Representatives and the Senate, and signed by President Bush on December 18, 2001. On September 4, 2002, President Bush issued the first proclamation designating September 11 as Patriot Day. Proclamations have been issued in subsequent years, and since 2009, the presidential proclamation has also designated the day as the National Day of Service and Remembrance.

UVA's basketball arena loves the Bachelorette's John Paul Jones (nbcsports.com; McCann)

If you do not follow the official Twitter account of the John Paul Jones Arena, you are missing out on premium "Bachelor in Paradise" content.

During the college hoops off-season, UVA's home arena - as SBNation's Streaking The Lawn first pointed out - has become a fan account for the Bachelor contestant of the same name.

The name isn't the only connection: John Paul Jones, the "Bachelor in Paradise" fan favorite is a DMV local, and son of a UVA alumnae. We even saw him at a Nationals game this season.

And so, in lieu of any pressing sports news, the Arena's account is capturing the biggest news in reality TV.

JPJ stole the hearts of ABC's "The Bachelorette" fans on Hannah Brown's season. After a few short weeks, he was sent home, though his time with the franchise did not end there. He is a staple on the networks' spin-off show, "Bachelor in Paradise" which currently airs twice a week.

In honor of #TheReturnOfJohnPaulJones, we had to update with a proper header. #BachelorInParadise

Where will CNY natives be playing Division I basketball in 2019-20? (PS; Waters)

The Central New York has always Division I basketball players.

From Danny Schayes to Bernard Blunt, from Lazarus Sims to Brandon Triche, the local area develops a steady stream of players who have gone on to have excellent college careers.

The same will be true during the 2019-20 with no less than nine Central New York natives on Division I college basketball rosters.

The list includes four incoming freshmen. Two of those freshmen played on teams that won New York State titles.

Here is a look at the CNY players on D-I rosters and their prospects for the upcoming season.

Nathan Knight -- William & Mary

Knight, who considered leaving school to enter the NBA draft, returns for his senior season at William & Mary.
Knight attended Syracuse’s Nottingham High School before finishing his prep career at Kimball Union Academy.
A 6-foot-10, 245-pound center, Knight is coming off a monster junior year in which he averaged 21.0 points, 8.6 rebounds and also blocked 70 shots. His 21 points per game were the most for a William & Mary player since 1968.
He was named to the Colonial Athletic Association’s first team last year and is a strong candidate to be the conference’s player of the year this season.

Jimmy Boeheim -- Cornell

The elder Boeheim brother will be a junior at Cornell this season. Jimmy Boeheim figures to be one of, if not the best player on the Big Red’s roster.

Boeheim, a 6-foot-8 forward out of Jamesville-DeWitt High School, started 16 games last year. He put up averages of 11.8 points and 3.8 rebounds. He also made 46 percent of his field goal attempts, including 35 percent on 3-pointers.

Syracuse University Becomes the 70th Bee Campus USA Institution in the Nation )syr.edu)

for rrlbees

Syracuse University has become the 70th educational institution in the nation to be certified as an affiliate of the Bee Campus USA program, designed to organize the strengths of educational campuses for the benefit of pollinators. Syracuse University joins more than 150 other cities and campuses across the country united in improving their landscapes for pollinators.

According to Meg Lowe, sustainability coordinator and Syracuse University Bee Campus USA committee chair, “the University has already taken great care in providing native pollinator habits across campus with native plant species, minimal pesticide use and, most recently, the addition of the Pete’s Giving Garden on South Campus. More pollinator gardens are being planned for the future.”

Grounds Manager Pat Carroll takes pride in the University’s commitment to minimizing hazards to pollinators by using nearly no neonicotinoid pesticides, glyphosate herbicide or other potentially dangerous pesticides. “Here at Grounds we are very excited to support Bee Campus USA,” says Carroll. “By implementing Integrated Pest Management practices we have been able to reduce the number of inputs we make on campus. As grounds manager, I believe it is important that we provide a beautiful campus while being stewards of the environment.”

To raise awareness about the plight of pollinators, Syracuse University’s Sustainability Management plans to publish a webpage on sustainability.syr.edu to disseminate information to the campus and external communities.
