Welcome to National Chocolate Milk Day!

In the late 1680s, an Irish-born physician by the name of Sir Hans Sloane invented the chocolatey beverage. When offered the position of personal physician to an English Duke in Jamaica, Sloane jumped at the opportunity. Jamaica interested the naturalist in him.

While in Jamaica, Sloane encountered a local beverage. The locals mixed cocoa and water together. However, when Sloane tasted it, he reported the flavor to be nauseating. After some experimentation, the doctor found a way to combine cocoa with milk. The creamy combination made it a more pleasant-tasting drink. Years later, Sloane returned to England with the chocolate recipe in hand. Initially, apothecaries introduced the concoction as a medicine.

Generations later, chocolate milk lovers enjoy their treat a variety of ways. It can be purchased premixed by the jug or individual serving. For a custom mix, powders and syrups allow us to make it as chocolatey as we like at home.

Syracuse basketball announces Orange-White game, autograph session (PS; Ditota)

Syracuse basketball fans will have official opportunities next month to interact with the team and watch it play.

SU plays its Orange-White scrimmage at 7 p.m. on Oct. 11 inside the Carrier Dome. Doors open at 6 p.m. for the intrasquad game; there will also be skills and 3-point shooting contests that night. Random fans will be selected through the Orange Rewards App to participate in those contests with current Syracuse players. The Orange-White scrimmage, for those of you asking about Orange Madness, replaces the previous incarnation of that event.

On Oct. 5, the team will host an autograph signing event from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the canyon area of Destiny USA. Fans will be provided with a poster on which to secure those autographs. The athletic department does not want fans to bring additional items to be signed and cautions that because of time constraints, attendance at the mall does not guarantee an autograph.

Admission is free for both events.

Syracuse Basketball: Early musings on the Orange’s 2019-20 stanza (itlh; Adler)

The Syracuse basketball squad is getting closer and closer to the commencement of its 2019-20 campaign, so it’s time for some initial thoughts.

The Syracuse basketball team enters the 2019-20 term with a ton of intrigue, as well as a bunch of question marks.

Expectations are tempered after the Orange lost four of five starters from a year ago. The roster is deep but young, and many of the sport’s pundits don’t view the ‘Cuse as either a top-25 crew nor a group that will reach the NCAA Tournament.

All of this is fodder and speculation, of course. But as Syracuse prepared on Wednesday to conduct its first official preseason practice, it seems appropriate to put forth a few thoughts on what to watch out for in 2019-20.

Much debate will likely focus on the point-guard position. Sophomore Jalen Carey should assume the starting role, following the departure of Frank Howard. Now, Carey is lightning-quick, a capable distributor, and can get to the rim with precision, but he’s also not a terrific shooter and turnover-prone, the latter of which is unsurprising for a guy only in his second stint who didn’t compile an abundance of minutes in 2018-19.

Freshman Brycen Goodine could compete for run with Carey at point guard. Goodine is super athletic and possesses an under-rated long-distance stroke. Whoever is manning the ship, the Orange needs a steady point guard to keep the offense in rhythm.

Syracuse men’s basketball practice is underway (localsyr.com Joshua)

Media members were welcomed into the first night of preseason practice on Wednesday night as the Syracuse men’s basketball season begins playing games in a little over a month.

We were allowed to watch roughly 20 minutes of action.

@Cuse_MBB practice started today. Marek Dolejaz looked good after missing the Italy trip with a finger injury. Bourama Sidibe put his bounce on display as he looks to be at full health. More from the practice coming up in sports at 11pm on @NewsChannel9 #LocalSYR
— Darius Joshua (@DariusJoshuaTV) September 26, 2019
Here are some of my observations from the first night of the 2019-20 season:
  • Marek Dolejaz looks healthy. The junior forward missed playing in the team’s Italy trip with a finger injury, but showed no issues from that in the team drills.
  • On that same note, Bourama Sidibe is healthy. He really showed what he could do at full health during the four games played in Italy and it was evident up close. He looked explosive and not favoring one leg over the other.
  • This team could be very deep. Only one starter is back in Elijah Hughes so there is a lot of production that needs to filled this upcoming season. From the guard position, to the forwards and even the centers, there are question marks as to how many minutes will there be to go around to the potentially 10-deep roster.
    • How will the guards in Jalen Carey, Buddy Boeheim, Brycen Goodine and Joe Girard III split time?
    • Who will play more, Jesse Edwards or John Bol Ajak?
  • One young player who will not worry about minutes, is Quincy Guerrier. The 6’7″ 210 pound forward from Montreal looks ready for the college game. He has range on the outside and the strength to battle inside. Yes, this is the first practice, but I was intrigued when he bulldozed over a member of the managerial staff at what that could mean down the line as he gets even stronger.
  • Elijah Hughes was working with the guards in the portion of the drills we saw. Last year, Coach Jim Boeheim emphasized Hughes was a forward even though he was listed as a guard/forward when transferring from East Carolina. It does not mean he will all of sudden be running the offense, but it could be something to build some ball handling as he will be the focal point of the offense this season.
Syracuse will play its first exhibition game against Daeman on October 26th at 7pm.

The regular season opener is against the reigning national champions , Virginia, on November 6th inside the Carrier Dome at 9pm on ACC Network.

What’s the best peanut butter? We tasted 45 varieties to find out (PS; Miller & Pucci)

The peanut butter and jelly sandwich has always been a go-to for children and adults alike. The easily-prepared delicacy packs plenty of nutritional energy, tastes good, and it’s relatively cheap.

But the foundation of this popular sandwich has evolved so much since the days of only Jif, Skippy and Peter Pan. Now we must choose among organic, unsalted, all-natural, whipped, sugar-free, name-brand and store-brand.

Well, we’re here to help you sort through all this. We tested 45 varieties of peanut butter to find which ones were worthy of our PB&J.
And we think we succeeded.

Why would we put our bodies through such stress? So you don’t have to.

The judging

The idea to rank peanut butters came from syracuse.com reader Julie Steinbrecher, who made the suggestion after we ranked 17 varieties of ketchup in July. So we—Charlie Miller and Jacob Pucci—asked her to join us.

This was a blind taste test of peanut butters from five stores in Syracuse: Wegmans, Price Chopper, Tops, Trader Joe’s and Walmart. We sampled national brands and the store brands.

We did not know which brand we were eating. We took notes and ranked them, from best to our least favorite. We judged them on texture, taste and appearance. We cleansed our palate after each sample with either water or 1% milk. We had nothing else to eat or drink during the four hours of tasting.

The top six made the final round. We then tried each of these on a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Here are our rankings, starting with the winners and working our way to the basement.

Our top six

1: Jif extra crunchy
45 peanut butters, ranked

  • Price: $2.49 for 16 ounces (15.5 cents per ounce) | Calories: 190 | Total Fat: 16g | Sodium: 110mg | Sugars: 3g
  • Ingredients: Roasted peanuts, sugar, molasses, vegetable oils, mono and diglycerides, salt
  • Charlie: “It turns out choosy mothers—and dads—were right when they choose Jif. This is your basic crunchy peanut butter. It’s not oily, it’s easy to spread and it tastes good. The balance between the chunks and butter is perfect and should serve as the standard. After three taste tests, this still is the best.”
  • Julie: “I’m sold. I’ve been going my whole adult life buying Wegmans store brand, and I don’t think I could ever eat that again after having this.”
2: Jif creamy
45 peanut butters, ranked

  • Price: $2.49 for 16 ounces (15.5 cents per ounce) | Calories: 190 | Total Fat: 16g | Sodium: 140mg | Sugars: 3g
  • Ingredients: Roasted peanuts, sugar, molasses, vegetable oils, mono and diglycerides and salt.
  • Jacob: “It’s a bit sweeter than the other creamy varieties. The roasted flavor of the peanuts really stands out."
  • Charlie: “It reminds me of my childhood. Maybe that’s why I identify with it.”
3: Peter Pan Simply Ground
  • Price: $2.99 for 15 ounces (19.9 cents per ounce) | Calories: 210 | Total Fat: 17g | Sodium: 125mg | Sugars: 3g
  • Ingredients: Roasted peanuts, sugar, vegetable oils, salt
  • Charlie: “This version is creamy with a little bit of crunch. You’re not going to find chunks of peanuts here; you’ll find grains of peanuts instead. It’s thick, but it’s smooth.”
  • Julie: “This is perfect if you want just a little crunch. It’s not overpowering.”
4: Jif Whips
  • Price: $3.29 for 15 ounces (21.9 cents per ounces) | Calories: 140 | Total Fat: 12g | Sodium: 95mg | Sugars: 2g
  • Ingredients: Roasted peanuts, sugar, vegetable oils, mono and diglycerides, salt
  • Charlie: “As you probably could guess, Jif Whips is very light, but it’s not airy. It’s like whipped butter, which is among my favorite spreads. The best part is that your bread won’t fall apart when you spread it. The long wide container makes it easy dunk fruit into the peanut butter.”
  • Julie: “This has a silky taste to it. It’s not sticky in my mouth at all.”
