Welcome to Bagpipe Appreciation Day!

Today we celebrate the bagpipes! The instruments have long been associated with the Scottish Highlands, although they have come from many different places, and there are many variations of them. They have also been used in many different contexts.

The main components of the bagpipe are the bag, chanter, and drones. The bag is usually made of animal skin or rubberized cloth. It is inflated either by having air breathed into it through a blowpipe or by using a bellows. Air can then be fed throughout the instrument to make the sound, by placing arm pressure on the bag. The bag allows sound to be continuous while giving players the chance to take breaths, as well as for several tones to be played at the same time.

The chanter, or melody pipe, has finger holes that let a player make notes to form melodies. The other pipes, called drones, may have single or double reeds. They play single, constant notes that accompany the melody. They are tuned with the chanter by lengthening or shortening their extendable joints. The pipes are in wooden sockets, or stocks, which are tied into the bag.

Syracuse Orange: 6 OT hoops, Pinstripe Bowl win highlight takeover (itlh; Adler)

Get your Syracuse Orange fix of some recent classic contests across various sports when the ‘Cuse takes over the ACC Network on Aug. 7.

The Syracuse Orange, whether it’s basketball, football or numerous other sports, has engaged in a bunch of tremendous battles in recent memory.

A handful of these epic encounters will get aired when Syracuse takes over the ACC Network on Friday, Aug. 7. This schedule of ‘Cuse clashes features a half-dozen affairs from 2009 through 2019.

Per a statement from the university’s athletics department, the “Syracuse takeover is part of a 15-day programming effort by the ACC Network to highlight some of the best games and greatest moments for each ACC institution.”

Another nugget from the cuse.com announcement to note: “In addition, a new series produced entirely by ACC schools, Authentic ACC will debut.”

Now, since the Orange didn’t join the Atlantic Coast Conference until the 2013-14 campaign, not every one of its games within the takeover has Syracuse squaring off with a foe that is actually in the ACC at present.

For example, airing from 8 pm until midnight on Aug. 7 is the Big East Conference Tournament tilt between Syracuse basketball and Connecticut from March of 2009 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Decision on fall championships will affect Syracuse football, basketball (itlh; Adler)

The NCAA board hasn’t canceled fall championships – yet – but a future move in that direction will impact Syracuse football and basketball.

Leaders of the Power Five leagues, including the Atlantic Coast Conference where Syracuse football is a member, as well as the College Football Playoff probably breathed at least a slight sigh of relief on Friday after the NCAA’s board of governors elected not to take any immediate action on fall championships.

The board, per a statement, will continue its discussions in August on the state of the 22 NCAA fall championships that are slated to begin in late November amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, which unfortunately is registering record numbers of cases in many states around the country.

These fall championships don’t include the lucrative College Football Playoff, which operates on its own, as the NCAA handles FCS football, but not at the Football Bowl Subdivision (“FBS”) level.

Yet if other sports, besides football, see their fall championships go away as a result of future decisions from the NCAA’s board, then that creates a real issue for football.

College basketball stuck in holding pattern during pandemic (AP; Marshall)

Baseball has begun its coronavirus-delayed season with limited long-distance travel and no fans in the stands.

The NBA has its Disney World bubble. The NHL will have two bubbles, in Toronto and Edmonton.

NFL rookies began reporting to training facilities last week as teams build up toward the start of training camp.

But while the major sports are finding ways to return to competition, college basketball is in a holding pattern, much like college football.

College basketball coaches do have an advantage over the football coaches while in limbo. Since their season starts later, they get a chance to see how things play out, both in professional sports and in college football.

“I know this for sure: it's not going to be like any other season we've ever had,” Southern Miss coach Jay Ladner said. “And even if we have a season, you're certainly looking at all types of changes and we all know that. But football is certainly the first order of business for administrators. A lot of what happens to them is going to drive, eventually, what happens to us."

Big Destiny USA restaurant reopens for in-person dining (PS; Tampone)

110 Grill has reopened at Destiny USA.

The restaurant is located near the food court on the second level at Destiny. It’s in space previously occupied by Uno Pizzeria & Grill.

It reopened Wednesday.

Tenants throughout the mall have been returning to life in recent weeks as Destiny finally got clearance to reopen its indoor common areas earlier this month.

Some tenants had been offering curbside pickup and others with their own exterior entrances were allowed to return earlier, but most of the mall was shut down until July 10.

Nonessential businesses in New York, including Destiny, closed in March to help slow the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. The state began reopening businesses in phases in May.
