Welcome to National Orange Blossom Day!

National Orange Blossom Day on June 27th each year encourages us to enjoy orange blossoms for their aesthetic beauty. Orange blossoms have been used in culinary dishes, desserts, and teas worldwide. They add a slight citrus flavor to any dish!

Fragrant orange blossoms offer multiple health benefits, too. When prepared correctly, they make a delicious tea or orange blossom water. Some of the advantages may include improved sleep, reduced anxiety, and improved circulation.

Detroit Pistons’ Rob Murphy on signing Syracuse’s Buddy Boeheim: How the NBA team scouted him, what they saw, what they liked (PS; Waters)

It would have been easy for the Detroit Pistons to sign Buddy Boeheim without seeing him play at all this past season.

After all, Detroit’s general manager Troy Weaver is a former Syracuse University assistant coach. So too is Pistons assistant general manager Rob Murphy. John Beilein, the team’s senior advisor for player development, is the former Le Moyne College coach whose son, Patrick, coached the Syracuse Stallions this past season and is now the coach at Baldwinsville High School.

The Pistons’ brass could have signed Boeheim as a favor to Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim; Weaver and Murphy’s former boss and a long-time friend to Beilein.

Instead, the Pistons, Murphy in particular, scouted Boeheim diligently before signing the Syracuse guard to a two-way contract shortly after the end of the NBA draft last Thursday.

Murphy, who coached at Syracuse from 2004 to 2012, saw Syracuse in person four times this past season. He estimated watching another 20 to 22 games on television.

Then, in May, Murphy and Weaver scouted Boeheim at the NBA’s G-League combine in Chicago. Finally, the Pistons brought Boeheim in for a pre-draft workout.

Illinois Basketball: Illini set to play Syracuse in Big Ten/ACC Challenge (writingillini.com; Bando)

For the third time in four years, the Illinois basketball team will host the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

The Illinois schedule is getting closer and closer to being finalized. It was announced Friday morning that the Illini will continue their November tradition of playing in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, as the Orange and Blue will host the Syracuse Orange on November 29 at the State Farm Center.

INBOX: @IlliniMBB will host the ACC’s @Cuse_MBB Nov. 29 as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, per an @IlliniAthletics release. This is the third time in four years that the #Illini will host the game, as they previously played Notre Dame (2021) and Miami (FL) in 2019. pic.twitter.com/jMnuV7RGow
— Zain Bando ™️ (@zainbando99) June 24, 2022

The Illini will have now hosted the Big Ten/ACC Challenge three out of the last four seasons, which included wins against Notre Dame and Duke. This game primarily takes place right before Big Ten play begins.

The Illinois basketball team looks to repeat as Big Ten regular-season champions.

Illinois won the Big Ten regular-season title during the 2021-2022 season, which was their first since 2005. With a lot of new faces, including Ty Rogers and Terrance Shannon Jr., the Illini will look to prove doubters wrong once again.

While Illinois has quite a few new faces coming in who will help the program, Syracuse does as well. Their class of 2022 ranked No. 18 in the country and included three four-star recruits, one of which is in the top 50 in Judah Mintz.

NCAA Basketball: Ranking the 14 matchups for 2022 ACC/Big Ten Challenge (bustingbrackets.com; Freeman)

Last season’s annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge produced some incredibly entertaining results. Of the 14 NCAA Basketball games, nine of them had a margin of five points or fewer. Three of them had to go at least one overtime, with NC State beating Nebraska in four OTs, 104-100.

Five ranked teams took part in the challenge, including No.1 Duke and No. 2 Purdue. The Boilermakers beat Florida State by nearly 30 points, while the Blue Devils fell to Ohio State in an upset. That defeat came back to haunt the ACC total, losing to the Big Ten, 8-6 in the overall challenge.

That made it the third straight year that the Big Ten won the series, cutting into the ACC’s all-time lead of 12-8-3. The Big Ten certainly was the better conference in the regular season last year but the ACC was better in the NCAA Basketball Tournament, including having two of the four Final Four participants.

The 2022-23 season will be a new one for the challenge and yet, there will be some similar matchups that have recently occurred.

There are a couple of pending rematches among these 14 matchups, including Duke vs Ohio State and Syracuse vs Illinois. And Pittsburgh and Northwestern faced off for two years in a row before last season. After finishing last in the ACC last season, the NC State Wolfpack was the team left out of the mix.

So based on the current matchups, who are the top games to watch in late November? Here’s how I would rank them in terms of intrigue.

14. Boston College at Nebraska

There’s simply not much to care for in this matchup. Boston College returns its top three scorers but Makai Ashton-Langford (12.0 ppg) as the best player on the court doesn’t create a lot of interest. Nebraska could’ve had a star returning player in Bryce McGowens but he left for the NBA Draft after one year.

There’s a good chance that both the Eagles and Cornhuskers each finish in the bottom 3 of their respective conferences. And without a star player on either side to focus on, there’s just no real reason to have an interest if you’re not a fan of either side.

13. Georgia Tech at Iowa

The Hawkeyes don’t have top-5 NBA Draft pick Keegan Murray but his brother and potential breakout star for next season, Kris Murray, is back. He’s the star attraction for Iowa next season who needs him to be a star in order to be competitive in the Big Ten. Georgia Tech needs new transfers, Javon Franklin and Lance Terry, to replace the lost production of Mike Devoe and Jordan Usher to have any hope of being decent.

Seeing how much Kris Murray improves will make this game interesting alone but that’s still not much. The Yellow Jackets may be the worst team in the ACC and this game has a real chance of not being competitive. And if it is, it’s probably because Iowa wasn’t as good as expected.

12. Pittsburgh at Northwestern

These teams are already fairly familiar with one another, as the Panthers won the 2019 and 2020 battles in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Both programs have struggled in the last few years and neither is predicted to be NCAA Tournament teams next season, especially after Northwestern lost leading scorer and rebounder Pete Nance to North Carolina.

Pittsburgh has a new-look roster, led by top-50 freshman guard Dior Johnson, who is a highly known recruit due to his many high school stops and previous commitments. Seeing how good he is alone will make this game watchable but as for the two teams themselves, not really.

11. Penn State at Clemson

This game could have some bubble implications for the NCAA Tournament, depending on how both programs do. Clemson may be less likely after losing all of its guards this offseason but still has forwards PJ Hall and Hunter Tyson coming back. Penn State’s strength is in the backcourt, led by Jalen Pickett and incoming transfer Cam Wynter.

There’s little individual starpower in this game and both are projected, bottom-half teams. But it should be a fairly competitive game, which alone could get some interest in the final 10 minutes.

10. Maryland at Louisville

It’s a battle of new head coaches in Kenny Payne (Louisville) and Kevin Willard (Maryland) and a couple of revamped rosters. There isn’t a lot of individual starpower in this game, with El Ellis and Sydney Curry leading the way for the Cardinals against Donta Scott and Jahmir Young of the Terrapins.

There’s going to be some intrigue into how these new eras work out, especially with Louisville. Their roster currently has just one true guard (Ellis) so how the lineups will work out is going to be interesting in itself. But that’s a season-long storyline and not enough to make this game a “must watch” for next season.

9. Minnesota at Virginia Tech

The Hokies are coming off another NCAA Tournament trip on the back of Keve Aluma but he’s now a pro. But Justyn Mutts is back in the frontcourt, joined by offensive force and Wright State transfer Grant Basile. The backcourt will be an interesting storyline, as Hunter Catoor and Sean Pedulla now have the keys to the offense. But will they be ready?

Minnesota loses most of its rotation from last season but brings back its best player in Jamison Battle. He’s joined by UNC transfer Dawson Garcia, who had star potential as a freshman at Marquette but struggled on and off the court with the Tar Heels. How the new backcourt works will ultimately depend on how good the Gophers are but they should be good enough to give the Hokies a game, one they shouldn’t want to lose for Bracketology purposes.

8. Wake Forest at Wisconsin

There would’ve been a lot of starpower had this game occurred a year ago, with Johnny Davis, Alondes Williams, and Jake LaRavia has now gone to the NBA. There isn’t a ton of individual talent but these are teams that should be in the middle tier of their respective conferences and this should be a potential “bubble game” for the 2023 NCAA Tournament.

Wake Forest has several transfers, including Tyree Appleby and Jao Ituka, while Wisconsin is hoping for a breakout campaign from Chucky Hepburn. The Demon Deacons’ offense vs the Badgers’ defense should be a fun contrast of strengths and there should be some stakes to this game as well.

7. Syracuse at Illinois

The Boeheim brothers are gone but dad and head coach Jim Boeheim remains and has a large incoming recruiting class to work with. Joe Girard is a fun guard to watch when he’s making shots and how opposing teams deal with the famous 2-3 zone is always an interesting aspect of games with the Orange.

Their opponent is one of the more fascinating teams of the offseason in Illinois, which could be a top-10 team or in the bottom half of the Big Ten depending on how things work out. Five-star freshman guard and former Kentucky commit Skyy Clark is the starting point guard, while impact transfers, Terrence Shannon and Matthew Mayer could become stars with the Illini. There are a lot of questions in this game and it should be a fun one no matter the result.

Syracuse Basketball: Blue-bloods heavy for 4-star big, who crashes top 25 (itlh; Adler)

Syracuse basketball 2023 priority recruiting target Joseph Estrella has proven one of the hottest high-school prospects nationwide this spring, regardless of class designation, on the AAU circuit.

That has helped fuel a massive leap in his national rankings from the primary recruiting services, and the 6-foot-11 power forward/center is also seeing some big-time programs get into the mix for Estrella, who was fabulous as a junior during the 2021-22 campaign for South Portland High School in South Portland, Maine.

In the 2022-23 term, his senior year, the four-star Estrella will suit up for the powerhouse Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H., a top-flight program that has sent numerous guys to the Hill in recent stanzas.

But before his Brewster Academy tenure transpires, Estrella has performed at an ultra-high level in grassroots basketball over the past couple of months for one of the best AAU squads out there, the New England-based Middlesex Magic in the Under Armour Association league.

Syracuse basketball coaches offered four-star Joseph Estrella nearly a year ago.

Last August, at the Orange’s annual Elite Camp, the ‘Cuse offered a scholarship to Estrella. I believe it amounted to his first offer from a high-major college team.

Since then, according to various media reports and interviews given by Estrella, it appears that Syracuse basketball coaches have recruited him hard, making Estrella a priority target in their 2023 cycle.

But the competition is intense. As we recently noted, Duke has offered Estrella. And not too long ago, fellow blue-blood program and 2022 national champion Kansas also offered him.

Besides those two recruiting heavyweights and the Orange, Estrella’s other offers include from Creighton, UConn, Iona, Miami, UMass, Illinois, Missouri, Xavier, California, Maryland, Notre Dame, Wake Forest, Wisconsin, Virginia Tech, Boston College, Iowa, Providence, Tennessee, Harvard, Maine, Penn State and Marquette.

Duke basketball: Four-star forward commits to rival ACC program (balldurham.com; Connelly)

A Duke basketball recruiting target has committed to a conference rival.

The Duke basketball program was a finalist for a four-star recruit that flew extremely under the radar.

However, the Blue Devils were never truly in the race for Taylor Bowen, the No. 31 player in the Class of 2023, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Bowen, a 6-foot-9 power forward, announced his decision to commit to the Florida State Seminoles on CBSSports HQ on Saturday afternoon over his other five finalists; Duke, Iowa, Providence, LSU, and Vermont.

The Blue Devils offered in October 2021 and seemed quite interested in the Brewster Academy (N.H.) standout before landing multiple commitments from players in the class that play the same position as Bowen.

Florida State only offered the heavily recruited target on April 25.

“It was great to get an offer from Duke, but I think they backed off a little bit, obviously, when you look at who they’re recruiting and who they’ve got in that class,” Bowen told Travis Graf of Rivals in April.

“At the time, it felt good to get that offer from Coach Scheyer. Knowing that a school like that wanted me and offered me a scholarship was major.”

Duke currently has the top ranked recruiting class in 2023, according to 247Sports, with five-star power forward Mackenzie Mgbacko, five-star power forward Sean Stewart, five-star point guard Caleb Foster, and five-star shooting guard Jared McCain.

Cowboy burger at Muskie's

This local hangout serves high-quality bar food on a budget (Dining Out Review) (PS; Benjamin)

Arriving down 1st Street in Fulton, you could easily blink and miss Muskie’s. But you would truly be missing out.

From the outside, this bar/restaurant looks like any other house on the street. But on the inside, you’ll find cheap drinks, tasty meals and friendly company.

Someone recommended Muskie’s on our Where Syracuse Eats Facebook page, so I met a few friends there for lunch. The place is definitely a local’s hangout, but the regulars welcomed us with open arms, adding us into their boisterous conversations.

We grabbed a few seats at the bar and were quickly greeted by Meghan, the enthusiastic bartender. Her energy was infectious and immediately made us feel comfortable.

To start, we ordered a round of drinks, one Bud Light can ($3) and two mixed drinks ($4 and $4.50). The beer menu was limited to the usual selection at most bars, with most of the mass-produced commercial beers alongside Mike’s Hard Lemonade and Twisted Tea.

But the liquor selection was impressive for a small bar with surprisingly low prices. The drink special of the day was vodka and lemonade for $3. That was one of our next drinks.

Muskie’s wings was the first item we ordered ($15 for a dozen). The menu offers 17 options, ranging from dry rubs to sauce-slathered, all flavorful, mild to spicy. Meghan let us split the dozen between two flavors. We settled on mesquite bacon BBQ and garlic pepper dry rub.

Q: will BC basketball ever climb into the top 12 of the ACC/B1G Challenge rankings?
They were good for a while in the Big East and probably will have a good run at some point in the ACC.

They have a small, bad facility and a small uncaring fan base that prevents them from investing in a better setup. Basketball will always be the #2 winter sport there.

Can't ever see that changing. But with the right coach and players, IMHO, they will occasionally break into the top 12 programs in the ACC. The bottom half of the conference is nothing great.
