Welcome to D-Day!

D-Day was originally scheduled for June 5, but it was pushed back a day due to bad weather. Eisenhower told his troops, "You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you." Five thousand ships, 13,000 aircraft, and over 160,000 American, British, and Canadian troops readied for invasion.

Airborne operations started in the early morning hours of June 6, preceding the amphibious landing by about 5 hours. Over 13,000 paratroopers from the U.S. 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions, the British 6th Airborne Division, and the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion were dropped behind enemy lines and worked to secure bridges and exit roads. An additional 4,000 men of the glider infantry landed using 500 gliders.

Syracuse Football: Experts expect College GameDay to skip SU in 2019 (itlh; Esden Jr)

Experts are straight up disrespecting the Syracuse football vs Clemson matchup in Week 3. Here’s what they said and why they’re dead wrong.

Syracuse football vs Clemson in Week 3 of the 2019 season is already building a ton of hype and we’re still in the Summer.

From homecoming to Tim Green’s jersey retirement to it being the ACC and home opener for the Orange, this party is going to be lit. On top of all of that, Syracuse vs Clemson will also be in primetime.

Although one thing that experts don’t believe is happening is College GameDay. Now the basketball version of the show has come to the Carrier Dome on a few different occasions, but the football version has never stepped foot on campus.

Many fans were hoping that the upcoming Tigers vs Orange matchup would be tantalizing enough to draw in the national College GameDay experience for the first time ever, although Brad Crawford of 247 Sports feels differently:

“For a show that’s rarely scripted, there’s no set plan for locations every fall, something that adds to the excitement a bit, GameDay senior coordinating producer Lee Fitting once said. GameDay rarely passes on an opportunity to broadcast from the weekend’s most sizable matchup and we’ve peeked at the 2019 slate hoping to determine where the traveling road show may set up shop next.”
WEEK 3: OKLAHOMA AT UCLA
Why this is a good option for GameDay:
There’s not a ton of quality games to savor in Week 3, but if Chip Kelly’s Bruins come out of the gates 2-0, here’s a tilt that falls right into GameDay’s lap out West. How bad would Kelly like to have Jalen Hurts running his offense right now? Other possibilities include Pittsburgh at Penn State and UCF’s home battle vs. Stanford. Do viewers still care about the Knights after their nation-leading winning streak was snapped by LSU? GameDay did seem to enjoy its first trip to Orlando last season.”

Three Players to Watch for Syracuse Football in 2019 (247sports.com; McAllister)

Syracuse football enjoyed a tremendous 2018 season, and are looking to build on that in 2019 in order to prove it was not a fluke. Rather, they want to show that it is a sign regarding the trajectory of the Orange program. Looking ahead to 2019, Syracuse returns a lot of key players on both sides of the ball and has a schedule that gives them plenty of opportunities to win games.

The ACC Digital Network released a video (you can watch it above) which outlined three Syracuse players to watch for next season. Let's take a look at each and how they could be impact players for Syracuse this fall.

TRILL WILLIAMS, DB

Trill Williams had a stellar freshman campaign. The former four star recruit showed why Syracuse was so excited to win that recruiting battle by getting on the field quite a bit as a true freshman. He never looked overwhelmed or overmatched, and the big moments did not scare him. His first career interception came in a road game at Clemson. Williams has size, length, athleticism and speed. Those skills, combined with supreme confidence, allowed him to have success as a rookie.

Those skills also give him positional versatility. Williams can play safety or corner, and is projected to compete for the starting outside corner spot opposite Christopher Fredrick or start inside as the slot corner. Either way, he provides playmaking ability and is not afraid to help out against the run. The potential is there for Williams to shine once again as a sophomore.

TAJ HARRIS, WR

Another true freshman who played a large role for Syracuse was Taj Harris. He started the year as a backup behind Devin Butler. However, as Butler slipped down the depth chart and his reps decreased, Harris took advantage. He eventually replaced Butler in the lineup and made plays in every game he played. Harris set a Syracuse record for receiving yards by a true freshman last season and should put up bigger numbers this season.

Harris will start and could become the number one receiver with the departure of Jamal Custis. Harris showed the ability to make plays down the field, be a possession receiver who can pick up first downs in critical situations and run after the catch. A year of added strength with all of that experience he gained as a freshman means a monster season could be on the horizon.

TOMMY DEVITO, QB
...

http://orangefizz.net/2019/06/syracuse-falling-behind-in-acc-2020-cycle/ (orangefizz.net; Hoppe)

On Monday, we dove deep into Syracuse’s 2020 recruiting targets. Things don’t look great as it stands right now, but it is very, very early. Let me make that clear right at the top: we’re six months away from National Signing Day. Everything related to the 2020 cycle is subject to drastic change from now until December.

With that being said, the Orange are off to a slow start in terms of racking up verbal commitments. Syracuse is currently dead last in the ACC with three.

ACC 2020 Verbal Commits: Clemson (17), Miami (15), Florida State (12), North Carolina (14), Georgia Tech (13), Wake Forest (13), NC State (8), Boston College (8), Duke (6), Louisville (6), Virginia (5), Virginia Tech (4), Pitt (3), Syracuse (3). *teams appear in order of overall class rankings by 247Sports.

So what does this tell us? The Orange are falling behind. Again, there’s plenty of time to make up the ground but this is how things stand right now. Isn’t this a little surprising considering SU was the second best team in the ACC in 2018? I’d say so. That’s the only thing concerning about this. Over the past three years (Dino Babers’ first three recruiting classes), the Orange have ranked 11th, 9th and 10th in the conference according to 247Sports.

That ranking could improve this year if a few talented four stars decide to bring their talents to Central New York. Here are a couple names to keep an eye on: Jaden Dottin (WR) and Amin Vanover (DE). Those are two guys that could instantly improve the status of the Orange’s 2020 class. Vanover has already made a visit to campus and has put Syracuse in his top-ten potential destinations.

Other sings of progress include Syracuse making recruits’ top tens and top fives more often and competing with the bigger schools. Obviously none of that matters if the players decide to go elsewhere. Maybe recruits are hesitant considering last year’s 10-3 season was such an outlier. Maybe Babers needs another year to prove to the country that he’s for real. No matter how you look at it, the SU program hasn’t seen much improvement in recruiting over the past several years.
...

Syracuse’s Dino Babers just delivered a recruiting pitch for ... Rutgers? (nj.com; Kratch)

Dino Babers wants high school football players in the Northeast to come play for him at Syracuse.

Or go to Rutgers. Or Army. Or even ACC rival Pitt.

Seriously.

The Syracuse head coach delivered an interesting-but-inspired recruiting pitch of sorts last weekend while attending the Lauren’s First & Goal football camp, which supports childhood cancer patients, at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, urging the players in attendance to pick a school close to home and try to win a national title there, rather than heading off to a power like Alabama or Clemson.

And, Babers said, it doesn’t matter where they go. As long as they stay in the area.

https://oklahoman.com/article/5633205/acc-generally-plays-quality-football-schedules (oklahoman.com; Tramel)

The ACC once ranked with the Pac-12 as the best-scheduling conferences in college football. I don’t know if that’s true anymore.

Maybe it is. Half the ACC is playing two non-conference games against fellow Power 5 conference opponents or big-time mid-majors like Boise State and Central Florida.

But traditionally strong-scheduling programs like Georgia Tech and Miami have lowered their standards. The availability of southern mid-majors willing to sign on makes dumbing down a schedule quite enticing to the SEC, and it seems that is starting to afflict some ACC schools, too. We’ll see when I do the national rankings this weekend.

For now, here is how the ACC teams rank in non-conference scheduling for 2019:

1. Duke: Alabama in Atlanta, North Carolina A&T, at Middle Tennessee, Notre Dame. Alabama and Notre Dame. What a schedule for the Blue Devils.
2. Florida State: Boise State in Jacksonville, Louisiana-Monroe, Alabama State, at Florida. Give the Seminoles credit. They always play Florida and almost always add another legitimate opponent, this year Boise State.
3. Louisville: Notre Dame, Eastern Kentucky, Western Kentucky in Nashville, at Kentucky. Time was, Louisville enhanced Kentucky’s schedule. Now it’s the other way around. Notre Dame and UK give the ‘Ville a solid twosome.
4. Clemson: Texas A&M, Charlotte, Wofford, at South Carolina. Give the Tigers credit. Few national powers are willing to play two Power 5 opponents in non-conference.
5. Pittsburgh: Ohio, at Penn State, Central Florida, Delaware. UCF makes this a really solid schedule. But that’s common for Pitt.
6. Georgia Tech: South Florida, The Citadel, at Temple, Georgia. Not up to the Yellow Jackets’ usual standard, but still not a bad schedule.
7. Boston College: Richmond, Kansas, at Rutgers, at Notre Dame. Strange schedule, to play three Power 5 opponents and it’s still not a great test. That’s what happens when KU and Rutgers are two of the three.
8. North Carolina: South Carolina in Charlotte, at Wake Forest, Appalachian State, Mercer. Interesting schedule by the Tar Heels. Wake Forest is a non-conference game, because the ACC didn’t schedule the in-state foes, so they’ve gotten together and produced a non-conference series.
9. Miami: Florida in Orlando, Bethune-Cookman, Central Michigan, Florida International in Miami. The Hurricanes need good opponents to sell tickets, but they need easy games to boost a mundane record. Looks like they’ve opted for victories this season.
10. Virginia: William & Mary, Old Dominion, at Notre Dame, Liberty. Give the Cavaliers credit. They’re keeping it in-state this year. Three Virginia opponents plus Notre Dame. And UVA also plays Virginia Tech, of course.
11. Virginia Tech: Old Dominion, Furman, Rhode Island, at Notre Dame. The Hokies in South Bend is a great game. But man, not much of a schedule otherwise. Two I-AA opponents and Old Dominion, though to be fair, ODU beat Virginia Tech last season.
12. Wake Forest: Utah State, at Rice, Elon, North Carolina. Wow. Good thing the Deacons did schedule the Tar Heels non-conference, else this would be a miserable schedule.
13. North Carolina State: East Carolina, Western Carolina, at West Virginia, Ball State. In the old days, when East Carolina was rolling along, this wouldn’t have been so terrible. But now, it’s not much of a trio to go along with West Virginia.
14. Syracuse: Liberty, at Maryland, Western Michigan, Holy Cross. Maryland hasn’t exceeded seven wins in any year since 2010, and mid-majors Western Michigan and Liberty aren’t anything to get excited about.

https://pittsburghsportsnow.com/2019/06/05/watch-pitt-ad-heather-lyke-talks-acc-network-launch-more/ (pittsburghsportsnow.com; Saunders)

Quite a bit different than what we are used to...

Pitt athletic director Heather Lyke wants you to contact your cable or satellite company and say “I want my ACC.”

Lyke, as part of a concerted push by the conference to increase the ACC Network’s carriage in advance of its August launch, spoke with local media on Wednesday morning to discuss the launch of the network and explain how crucial it is that Pitt fans express their desire to watch the network to their television provider.

So far, the ACC has inked deals with DirecTV and Verizon Fios, but regionally important providers Armstrong, Comcast and Dish Network have not signed on. Viewers with one of those providers that want to watch Pitt’s games on the network like the Panthers’ 2019 debut on Aug. 31 against Virginia, will still be able to, if they purchase a subscription through Hulu Live or ESPN Plus, but it’s still very important to Pitt that those cable providers feel the pressure to carry the network, because that’s the way the conference gains revenue.

Lyke also touched on other topics surrounding Pitt athletics. Check it out:

...

ACC Network expected to increase exposure, revenue for its members including Pitt (triblive.com; DiPaola)

Heather Lyke likes the exposure the ACC Network will give Pitt athletics when it launches Aug. 22.

“It’s a national network,” Pitt’s athletic director said Wednesday while meeting with a small group of reporters. “So your brand goes across the country. It gives us the chance to tell the stories of who our kids are and who our coaches are in a much more transparent way.”

The ACC Network’s 24/7 blanket will be comprehensive, too. There are plans this year to televise more than 450 live sporting events, including 40 football games, 150-plus men’s and women’s basketball games and championships from all of the conference’s 27 sports not covered by another network.

On the eve of the launch of the ACC Network

But finances rule the landscape in college sports, and that’s where the network will play its most important role.

“Economically, the revenue as it relates to television is significant and real,” she said. “We’re behind, frankly, at the ACC up until this point. Now, obviously, we’re going to catch up pretty quickly with the successful launch.”

The ACC reported total revenue of $464.7 million in its 2017-18 federal tax return, an increase of 11.1 percent from the previous year but fourth among the Power 5 conferences, the Daily Press of Newport News, Va., reported.

It also is double the $232.4 million total from 2012-13, the year before Pitt was part of the conference’s most recent expansion.

Distribution to 14 member schools in 2017-18 averaged $29.5 million, with Pitt getting $28.3 million. Notre Dame, which does not play football in the ACC, received $7.9 million.

Lyke declined to quantify the financial impact of the network, mentioning it will depend on how many of the larger cable companies jump on board and carry the network’s programming.

“We have conservative projections from the ACC, but right now it’s a lot dependent on distribution,” she said. “So certain cable companies will drive that number significantly. So it’s just a matter of who signs on and at what point.”

Lyke pointed out Comcast, which covers Pennsylvania, Florida and New England, didn’t offer the Big Ten Network until 18 months after it launched.

That’s why she is calling on Pitt fans to call their cable provider and “not ask if they’re going to get the ACC Network, but demand,” she said.

for gbo

Isaiah Simmons returns to Clemson for one more year and many expect him to be the best player on the Tigers’ defense.

At 6-foot-2, 230 pounds, Simmons can play linebacker and safety. Once again, he will be the Tigers’ starting strong-side linebacker / nickel back, a move he made prior to the 2018 season.

Last year, Simmons flourished in his role. He led a Clemson defense, ranked No. 1 in the country in scoring defense, in tackles. He posted a career-high 97 tackles. He also had 9.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage and broke up seven passes and forced three fumbles.

Simmons also had an interception against Louisville, which he returned 27 yards for a touchdown.

Thanks to everyone that participated. UVA's logo rose to the top as the #1 ACC logo and they were the only Tier 1 logo, which demonstrates the superiority of this logo over the field. Props to UVA's logo designer.

Sincere apologies to NC State fans for using their block "S" logo instead of the wolf head logo. It was an honest mistake.

I'll have the results of the question about you guys' opinions on the likelihood of a Non Clemson team winning the ACC this season up on my Twitter later today. Check my Twitter @Fanjuicer this afternoon or check back to this post later today and I'll update with a link.

AllSportsDiscussion keeps beating the drum.
When reliance on metrics go too far ( Clemson 44 Alabama 16 )
It’s fine that you’ve used metrics as a score predictor, but then after the fact you double down and still predict Alabama to win 6 or 7 games in a 7 game series to defend your metrics.
TRUE.
Clemson wouldn’t beat Alabama by 28 every time they played, because in some of those games it would have been more than 28. Clemson backed off with subs in the 4th quarter and went to primarily running the ball. It could have far worse. Now I do think if they played 7 times, Alabama wouldn’t go winless. Alabama was very good, but they weren’t better than Clemson.

Blaze Pizza: LeBron-backed chain nears first CNY opening (PS; Tampone)

The first Blaze Pizza location in the Syracuse area plans to open next month.

There’s no exact date yet, but the Blaze Pizza at the Marshalls Plaza in DeWitt should open sometime in early July, said Eric Recoon of Benderson Development, the plaza’s developer. Blaze will also open a location in New Hartford this summer.

The Blaze planned for The Marshall student apartment complex near Syracuse University will open in early 2020, according to Blaze.

The fast casual pizza chain has been eyeing Central New York since at least 2017. The company already has sites in the Albany, Rochester and Buffalo areas.

The chain is, of course, known for its celebrity backers. NBA star LeBron James was a founding investor, along with journalist and former first lady of California Maria Shriver and Boston Red Sox co-owner Tom Werner.

James endorses the brand and is an owner of several Blaze franchises himself.

Customers can pick from a menu of signature pizzas or build their own by choosing from dozens of different toppings. Pies go for about $8.

The pizzas are made to order and cooked in about three minutes in a wood-fired oven that can get as hot as 900 degrees.

The menu also includes salads, sides and desserts. Some locations serve beer and wine, but there's word yet on whether any of the Central New York sites will.

Blaze opened its first location in August 2012 in California and expanded to over 200 restaurants in 32 states within five years. The company now has over 300 restaurants in 41 states and five countries.

Blaze is just the first of several new tenants coming soon to Benderson’s Marshalls Plaza. The new building Blaze will occupy is already home to a CoreLife Eatery that opened last year.
