Today is for drinking beer! Beer making can be traced to about 6,000 years ago in ancient Sumeria. At that time, beer was cloudy because of lack of filtering, and it was drunk through a straw. By 2000 BCE, the Babylonians were brewing 20 types of beer. The Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans made beer, although wine became much more popular with the Romans—they considered beer to be the drink of the Barbarians and it was only popular on the edges of the Empire. Germanic groups were brewing beer by 800 BCE.
Because of contamination, beer was a much safer drink than water during the Middle Ages; it was drunk by people of all ages from all classes. The Catholic Church even got involved with brewing beer, and abbeys were testing grounds for improvements in brewing. Beginning in the ninth century, in Germany, hops began being introduced, standards were set up for beer, and beer began being mass-brewed. The 1516 Beer Purity Law—Reinheitsgebot—said a certain level of quality must be met for German beer. All beer could only be made with water, hops, malted barley, malted wheat, and yeast.

Axe: Coley leads by example in SU secondary full of stars: 'That’s Mr. Dependable' (PS; $; Axe)
The Syracuse University football secondary has NFL-caliber talent at both starting cornerback positions in Garrett Williams and Duce Chestnut, but it wasn’t one of those shining stars that put the final nail in SU’s 22-20 win over Virginia on Friday night.
It was Eric Coley, a sixth-year defensive back out of Fayetteville-Manlius, that swatted away the 4th-and-4 pass from Virginia QB Brennan Armstrong that sealed victory and kept the Orange undefeated at 4-0.
“Real special moment for me,” Coley said Tuesday. “I think in the moment, I wasn’t really thinking we won the game. I was thinking that we’re 4-0 now. We did it in the final seconds of the game again. It was cool.”
Coley has done a little bit of everything since coming to Syracuse as a redshirt freshman in 2017, grinding away mostly in the shadows, stepping up when needed and leading by example.

Shrader says SU offense has 'new plan' after early struggles in run game (PS; $; Leiker)
During the preseason, Syracuse football’s offensive scheme for 2022 was advertised as a more balanced blend of the passing and rushing games.
Through SU’s first four games, it’s seemed more like the pass-heavy offense coordinator Robert Anae ran at his previous program. Syracuse already has 1,000 passing yards through four games, and eight of the team’s 14 touchdowns have been through the air.
There are a number of reasons the Orange’s run game has not been as prominent: Opposing defenses shutting down running back Sean Tucker and quarterback Garrett Shrader finding career levels of success through the air are the two most obvious.
But Shrader teased after Tuesday’s practice the team will debut a new look to the offense Saturday against Wagner in an effort to reignite the team’s run game with Tucker.
“Moving forward, I think we’re doing some different stuff,” Shrader said. “We’ve got a new plan. (Tucker’s) still a key part of the offense, and we’re gonna give him the ball as much as we can. It’ll be fun moving forward. It will look a little different, but I think it’ll be more explosive.”
Shrader has accounted for a large share Syracuse’s rushing yards this season. He’s averaging 53 yards per game and is up to 212 on the season. SU has 668 rushing yards through four games.
As a result, Shrader has taken his fair share of blows. His helmet was knocked loose twice against Louisville. He bounced off the field upside down as the result of a tackle during the Purdue game. And on Friday in the Orange’s 22-20 win over Virginia, he was sacked six times.

Babers wants his team locked in vs. Wagner, a team on a 23-game losing streak (PS; $; Leiker)
Syracuse football coach Dino Babers knows what it’s like for an FCS team to upset an FBS one.
It’s why he’s doing “everything in (his) power” to make sure his team stays focused ahead of hosting Wagner (0-3) on Saturday evening in the JMA Wireless Dome.
Babers was the head coach at Eastern Illinois when it opened its 2013 season with a road trip to San Diego State. His team upset the Aztecs, 40-19 on their home turf. It was one of just five games San Diego State lost that season.
“We need to stay locked in and understand that that stuff does happen,” Babers said Monday. “It’s already happened a bunch of times around the country, and we really don’t want it to happen here in Syracuse, New York.”

Syracuse football: Wagner depth chart has some linebacker swaps and other tweaks (TNIAAM; Haller)
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Depth charts in the Dino Babers era as head coach of the Syracuse Orange tend to be reflective rather than projecting. This week is no different. After the last minute 22-20 win against the Virginia Cavaliers, Coach Babers released a depth chart that pretty well mirrored what we saw out on the field. Stop me if you’ve heard this before. There was a bit of a wrinkle in the linebackers though.
Derek McDonald is still listed as the starting Sam backer, so it’s probably safe to say the injury that kept him out against Virginia isn’t a season ender. That said, he now has a new backup listed behind him and listed as an “OR”, in Anwar Sparrow. This could mean McDonald is out again this week, or it could just be what we saw on the field because of the injury.
Prior on the depth chart, Sparrow was listed as the Will, behind Marlowe Wax. He has swapped with Leon Lowery who was previously listed as the backup in that slot. Either way both got run this past weekend, so it’s a bit of a moot point, but it looks like Sparrow is the first man in at the outside linebacker positions.
Offensively, we didn’t mention the two-deep, but with Isaiah Jones going down, Umari Hatcher and D’Marcus Adams are listed as the “OR” backup to Damien Alford for both UVA week and this week against Wagner.
Also of note with the Terry Lockett injury (confirmed today to be season ending knee), Kevon Darton has assumed that slot in the ones. His backup is now Elijah Fuentes-Cundiff, the redshirt freshman from the Bronx. This blow at least comes at a ripe time to get both Darton and Fuentes-Cundiff snaps against Wagner this week.
On a special teams note, Mike Midkiff is back to being the backup holder from James Williams, who was listed last week. Midkiff was the holder last week when Justin Barron was tossed for targeting.
Syracuse football: Week 4 grades vs Virginia (TNIAAM; De Guzman)
Didn’t expect this one to be this close, huh?
The Syracuse Orange barely scraped past the Virginia Cavaliers to win a Friday night primetime game 22-20. The Orange now sit at 4-0 on the season, though the road to get here has been anything but conventional.
That remains true for this game. Let’s go through the grades now, shall we?
Quarterbacks: B-
Quietly, Garrett Shrader had 277 yards on 22-33 passing. If this was last season’s team, you’d take those numbers in a heartbeat. Even now, you’d still accept those numbers from a quarterback that had accuracy concerns coming into the 2022 campaign. However, it was far from a perfect performance from Syracuse’s signal caller.
The chief problem that stood out was Shrader’s red zone decision making, which bled into other questionable decisions in the passing game. He seemed to lock onto receivers at times and force the ball to his first read, which resulted in either a missed outside pass, a batted ball or an interception.
Secondly, this was easily Shrader’s worst run game of the year. Taking away the sack yardage, Shrader rushed eight times for 39 gained yards. His running balanced out the offense against Purdue to keep Syracuse in it. However, he was not as successful this week, although that might not have been entirely his fault. But along the same lines, Shrader’s out-of-pocket decision making also still needs work heading into the middle of the season.
Running Backs: C+
Another rough game for Sean Tucker, but much like last week, a game that wasn’t entirely his fault. However, the Orange returned to a formula that they found success for Tucker - passing the ball to him. Tucker routinely ran smart routes to get himself open and Syracuse fans know what he can do in open space. But Syracuse’s offense needs balance, and the lack of a running game has made the past two games a lot closer than they could have been.

Syracuse football is 4-0 for the first time since 2018, after the Orange squeaked by fellow Atlantic Coast Conference squad Virginia last Friday night.
The 22-20 triumph by the ‘Cuse over UVA on the Hill marked the second week in a row where Syracuse football scored points on its final offensive series to prevail, first against Big Ten Conference member Purdue in Central New York, and then versus the Cavaliers.
With its conquest of Virginia, the Orange moved into the latest Coaches poll at No. 25, and that development represented the inaugural occasion where the ‘Cuse has been nationally ranked dating back to 2019.
Next up for Syracuse football is another home date, this time around against FCS team Wagner (0-3) this coming Saturday. As we’ll detail below, the Orange is a supremely massive betting favorite in this non-conference collision.
Assuming that the ‘Cuse bests the Seahawks, and Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers said this week that his players have to be laser-focused versus Wagner, then the Orange would advance to 5-0 for the first instance in 35 years.

After escaping the JMA Wireless Dome on Friday night with a two-point win over fellow Atlantic Coast Conference squad Virginia, Syracuse football sits at 4-0.
The Orange, which will host FCS team Wagner (0-3) this coming Saturday beginning at 5 pm, is now getting more and more attention in college football’s national conversation.
As we noted in a column on Monday, Syracuse football sits at No. 25 in the latest Coaches top-25 poll, marking the first time that the ‘Cuse is nationally ranked dating back to 2019.
With the Orange just two victories shy of bowl eligibility in the 2022 campaign, national pundits are providing a variety of projections as to where Syracuse football could land during bowl season.
And the ‘Cuse continues to push its way up in power rankings from national media outlets while maintaining solid footing in Atlantic Coast Conference ratings at this point in the present term.
Syracuse football is garnering more respect from some national media members.
So the Orange is No. 25 in the Coaches poll and is the de facto No. 30 group in the most recent Associated Press top-25 poll after picking up 22 votes there.

I am not going to predict Pitt will make the College Football Playoff field and play for the national championship.
I am not going to bet against it happening, either.
Have you taken a good look at Pitt's remaining schedule?
Let's start here:
Pitt is ranked No. 24, one of five ACC teams in the latest Associated Press top 25 poll. The others are No. 5 Clemson, No. 10 North Carolina State, No. 22 Wake Forest and No. 23 Florida State. Pitt doesn't have to play any of those teams before the ACC championship game.
It's good being in the woefully weak Coastal Division.
Pitt should be favored in all of its remaining games with the possible exception of the Miami game on the final regular season Saturday. Even that Miami game doesn't look as difficult as it did when Miami was ranked No. 16 in the AP preseason poll. Miami, which lost at Texas A&M on Sept. 17, is coming off a 45-31 home loss to 25 1/2 -point underdog Middle Tennessee on Saturday. Star quarterback Tyler Van Dyke was benched in that game. Van Dyke had been considered a Heisman Trophy contender and No. 1 pick in next spring's NFL draft. He outplayed Kenny Pickett in Miami's 38-34 win against Pitt at Heinz Field last season when Miami was a 9-point underdog. Beyond that, Miami still must play Florida State and Clemson before its game against Pitt.
In other words, Miami is a mess.
Let's look at Pitt's next seven games before it goes to Miami:
Georgia Tech
Talk about a program that's a mess. Georgia Tech fired coach Geoff Collins and athletic director Todd Stansbury on Monday after its 27-10 loss to Central Florida on Saturday left it with a 1-3 record. Collins is best remembered for giving Pat Narduzzi a drive-by handshake after Pitt's 34-20 win in 2020. Narduzzi is 6-1 against Georgia Tech.
Virginia Tech
First-year coach Brent Pry, formerly Penn State's defensive coordinator, is finding the going tough. Virginia Tech took a 33-10 beating at home from West Virginia on Thursday night and also has a loss against Old Dominion. Narduzzi has won three of the past four against Virginia Tech.
at Louisville
This could be one of Pitt's two tougher remaining games. It will be Louisville's homecoming game. Quarterback Malik Cunningham might be the best running quarterback in the country. Louisville beat South Florida, 41-3, on Saturday but lost a close game to Florida State and was blown out by Syracuse. Narduzzi is 2-0 against Louisville.
at North Carolina
This could be the other difficult game for Pitt, another homecoming for its opponent. North Carolina is 3-1 but coming off a 45-32 loss to a mediocre Notre Dame team. Narduzzi has won two in a row against North Carolina after losing four in a row in the series.
Syracuse
Forget its 4-0 record. Syracuse is still Syracuse. It has had only one winning season in the past eight years. It also must play North Carolina State, Clemson and Notre Dame before it plays Pitt. Narduzzi is 6-1 against Syracuse, which has beaten Pitt just three times in the past 20 years.

Syracuse hosts Wagner in search of first 5-0 start since 1987
After heart-thumping wins in each of the last two weeks, Syracuse wouldn't mind a more relaxing victory Saturday when FCS foe Wagner comes to town.
The Orange are trying to improve to 5-0 for the first time since 1987. They trounced Louisville and UConn in their first two games before slipping past Purdue in the final seconds and then getting by Virginia 22-20 in the waning minutes last Friday.
Looking forward, this could be a "trap game" for the Orange, as they face ranked opponents in five of their next six games. The only matchup in that stretch against a non-ranked foe comes against Notre Dame, which was ranked as high as No. 5 earlier in the season.
"This game is, to me, a tricky game for us. Our team has to really stay locked in," Syracuse head coach Dino Babers said.
He especially wants his team to focus on cleaning up its offensive execution. The Orange were thrilled to win against the Cavaliers despite committing four turnovers.
"We're really fortunate to come out with the win. We're excited about that," Babers said after defeating Virginia. "The play was not perfect, that's for sure. But the record is."
The Seahawks' record, meanwhile, is far from perfect. Wagner has lost its first three games by a combined 96 points. They have scored a total of 14 points in their last two games and are coming off a 27-7 loss to St. Francis (Pa.).
But the Seahawks are coming off a bye week, so coach Tom Masella is hoping the extra rest gives his team an advantage.
"I thought we had a good week of practice last week," Masella said on the Wagner College TD Club Coaches Show. "We got some young kids some reps, but we had to get better fundamentally, and I thought our kids had a good week last week."

Carney: 'A lot to be proud of' after 4-0 start for Syracuse football - The Juice Online (the juice; podcast; Cheng)
When Syracuse kicked off its season against Louisville on Sept. 3, the question on the minds of most people is whether or not the Orange could get to a bowl game. In nearly every preseason projection, the Orange was either at six wins, or five wins, or 5.5 depending on what publication you were reading.
Of course, SU has jumped out to a faster start than most expected, winning all four of its games and are now ranked in the USA Today Coach’s Poll (25), while receiving votes in the AP Poll (30), after a come-from-behind 22-20 win over Virginia on Friday evening. That has changed Syracuse’s projected wins from the 5-6 territory into the 7-8 range.
But there are also perils ahead. After Syracuse plays FCS Wagner this weekend (they are a 38-point favorite at the time of this writing), the Orange embarks on a brutal stretch of the season, facing five ranked teams in six games, with previously ranked Notre Dame as the sixth team. And even in wins over Purdue and Virginia, Syracuse’s flaws have started to show, be it penalties, turnovers or scoring in the red zone.
I chatted with three-time All Big East punter and former captain at Syracuse, Brendan Carney, on this week’s The Juice on the Cuse Podcast, presented by SNY.tv, to get his take on Syracuse’s start so far (“there’s a lot to be proud of,” he says). He also sounds off on how the Orange will fare as it heads into the gauntlet, starting with its matchup with No. 10 NC State on Oct. 15. He believes the Orange can win 7-8 games, but things will certainly not be easy.
In the conversation, Brendan and I also chat about Sean Tucker’s struggles (60 yards rushing against Virginia), how SU can reestablish the run game and reinvigorate the offense, the job true freshman Max von Marburg has done as the team’s starting punter, and how it feels seeing Syracuse ranked in one of the two most largely recognized rankings in college football.

The hype train has been chugging along since the Georgia Tech win in 2020. Sean Tucker replaced Jawhar Jordan and Markenzy Pierre and took 24 carries for 112 yards and a two touchdowns, not bad for a true freshman. From there Tucker crossed the century mark twice against Liberty and Notre Dame before SU ended its season 1-10. Obviously a rough season, but that’s not to say there wasn’t a glimmer of hope that the Orange had a superstar on their hands.
The 2021 season emphasized everyone’s inclinations the ball carrier toted the rock 25 times to the tune of 181 yards and a score against the University of Ohio. Three months later, the Maryland native staked claim to nine 100+ yard rushing performances on the year. The All-American didn’t have the option to go pro with the eligibility guidelines so he of course decided to return to the Hill.
In the summer, you saw all the tweets and all the clips. H34ISMAN! #PL34SED! Sean Tucker for Heisman! Well now everybody knows who 34 in Orange and Navy is and they are making it their mission to shut him down. First it was Purdue who found a way to bottle up the talented running back. Tucker was held to 42 yards on 18 carries and didn’t find the end zone against the Boilermakers. Then Virginia copied the engineers blueprint and constricted Tucker to 60 rush yards on 21 takes.

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound linebacker announced scholarship offers this week from Michigan State, Virginia and Purdue — giving him six from the Big 10 and four from the ACC.
Both Pitt and Penn State already have offered him.
ranks Fisher as a three-star recruit and the eighth-best prospect in Pennsylvania.
His other Big 10 offers are from Maryland, Indiana and Minnesota. His additional ACC offers are Boston College and Syracuse.
Fisher announced his first SEC offer Thursday night from Kentucky.
Fisher holds nearly 20 offers with a number of Mid-American schools also included.
He was Aliquippa’s second-leading tackler last season when the Quips won WPIAL and PIAA Class 3A titles.

Braheem Long Gets Good Vibes on Syracuse Visit (SI; McAllister)
An intriguing athlete in the 2024 recruiting class is Camden (NJ) High standout Braheem Long. Long has the ability to play wide receiver or defensive back at the next level and is already attracting power five attention. He visited Syracuse over the weekend in order to attend the Orange's game against Virginia, and picked up an offer on the trip.
"The recruiting coach liked my film and my size," Long said. "So after the game they offered me and it was just a very good feeling and experience."
During the visit, Long also got to see what Syracuse has to offer as well as connect with former teammates.
"I got to tour the whole facility, I took pictures, met all the coaches," Long said. "The best part of my visit was to see my old teammates Deuce Chestnut and Alijah Clark who now are the starting defensive backs. They said it is definitely a school they would love for me to come to and experience the atmosphere. They also said the coaching is great and they are building something great at the Cuse."
After picking up the offer, Long is excited to continue to develop his relationship with Syracuse.

The Wolfpacker's ACC Power Rankings: Week 5 (on3.com; McDowell)
Only four ACC teams remain undefeated headed into conference play. NC State, Florida State, Syracuse and Clemson are 4-0 and ready to compete in what looks like a challenging Atlantic Division. The Wolfpack plays each of the latter three programs in the next few weeks, setting up for an exciting start to the conference schedule.
Every Tuesday, The Wolfpacker will rank each of the 14 ACC football programs using the past week’s results, the momentum around the respective programs and what we are hearing from around the conference to inform our decisions.
Here are our ACC Power rankings for week three of the college football season:
1) Clemson (4-0)
Last week’s result: A 51-45 win over Wake Forest
Clemson‘s offense looked great against Wake Forest. The Tigers picked up their second ACC win of the year behind the arm of DJ Uiagalelei, who threw for 371 yards and 5 touchdowns in the overtime win, and 104 rushing yards by Will Shipley.Last Saturday might have been the best game of the quarterback’s career as a full-time starter, and now he can carry that momentum into a matchup against NC State’s defense. This will be a fascinating matchup and, while their defense gave up a lot of points, Wake Forest might have the best offense in the conference, and the Tigers were missing multiple contributors on defense.
With the Wolfpack traveling to Clemson this weekend, the outcome of that game will determine who is in the top spot of these power rankings next week.
T-2) Florida State (4-0)
Last week’s result: A 44-14 win over Boston College
Florida State defeated Boston College in dominant fashion Saturday, continuing its impressive start to the year. Jordan Travis returned for the Seminoles and threw for 321 yards. With its quarterback playing as well as he has to start the year, Florida State has a chance to make some noise in the conference this year and belongs in the top tier of these power rankings.T-2) NC State (4-0)
Last week’s result: A 41-10 win over UConn
NC State took care of business against Connecticut, starting the blowout with a 75-yard touchdown pass to Thayer Thomas on the first play from scrimmage. Devin Leary tossed 4 touchdowns, the running game was solid and the defense remained stout. The Wolfpack will spend this weekend preparing for a drastic jump in competition level— an ACC matchup against Clemson.4) Wake Forest (3-1)
Last week’s result: A 51-45 loss to Clemson
Wake Forest came super close to upsetting No. 5 Clemson. Sam Hartman looked like the superstar from last season, throwing for 337 yards and 6 touchdowns on just 29 attempts. With Hartman playing like a Heisman Trophy contender, it covers up a defense that has been below average so far this year.The Demon Deacons will likely have to improve on defense to compete for the ACC title, but Hartman’s arm, and some really impressive talent and depth at receiver, will likely keep them in every game this year.
T-5) Pittsburgh (3-1)
Last week’s result: A 45-24 win over Rhode Island
Pittsburgh is the only preseason Coastal Division contender that has not disappointed so far this season. The Panthers’ only loss was a close defeat to a red-hot Tennessee program with their starting and backup quarterback both injured. Quarterback Kedon Slovis returned last weekend, but the star of the game was running back Israel Abanikanda, who carried the ball 19 times for 177 yards and 4 touchdowns. Pittsburgh is definitely the favorite to win its division right now.T-5) Syracuse (4-0)

Syracuse almost gave up a second-half comeback to UVA but held on to remain undefeated. Running back Sean Tucker was quiet for the Orange, only averaging 2.9 yards-per-carry. After a matchup with Wagner and a bye week, it will be very interesting to see how a likely-undefeated and solid Syracuse defense and streaky offense fare against NC State....

Four of the nation’s 21 remaining undefeated FBS teams are from the ACC – all in the Atlantic Division.
Clemson is 4-0 for the seventh time in the last eight years; Florida State is 4-0 for the first time since 2015; NC State is 4-0 for the first time since 2018; Syracuse is 4-0 for the first time since winning 10 games in 2018, and is seeking its first 5-0 start since 1987.
Florida State and Syracuse are the only teams in the country with three wins vs. Power 5 opponents. The Seminoles have wins over LSU in New Orleans, at Louisville and vs. Boston College. The Orange have P5 victories over Louisville, Purdue and Virginia.
Two Top 25 ACC games on tap for Saturday
Of the five games nationally this week between ranked AP teams, the ACC is featured in two of those – No. 22 Wake Forest at No. 23 Florida State (3:30 p.m./ABC) and No. 10 NC State at No. 5 Clemson (7:30 p.m./ABC).The game between No. 22 Wake Forest vs. No. 23 Florida State is just the second meeting between the two teams when both are ranked. The only other occurrence was 2008 when No. 18 Wake Forest defeated No. 24 Florida State, 12-3.
‘College GameDay’ comes to Clemson
ESPN “College GameDay” will broadcast live from Clemson on Oct. 1 from 9 a.m. to noon in advance of the prime time matchup with NC State at 7:30 p.m. on ABC. Saturday’s broadcast will be Clemson’s 30th overall appearance – and eighth home appearance (including Thursday editions) – on College GameDay. This will be NC State’s second appearance on College GameDay.NC State is ranked in the top 10 of the AP Poll for the first time since 2002 (also 10th). This week’s contest between No. 5 Clemson and No. 10 NC State is the first of its kind for the Wolfpack, which has not previously played in a top 10 matchup. Clemson and NC State have played five times previously when both teams were ranked as members of the ACC.

Duke returns home to Wallace Wade Stadium Saturday to host its first ACC game of the year against Virginia at 7:30 p.m:
The Blue Devils fell to Kansas last weekend to mark their first loss in what has otherwise been a booming start to the season. Duke traveled to a sold-out stadium in Lawrence, Kan., and leaned heavily on what, or more importantly who, has made it so successful this season: Riley Leonard.
The sophomore quarterback racked up 324 yards in the air and no turnovers, but it was Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels who stood out most with his five total touchdowns. Nonetheless, this Duke football team under first-year head coach Mike Elko is playing football at a much higher level than a season ago.
Virginia is in an identical phase of the rebuilding process. The Cavaliers signed former Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliot after head coach Bronco Mendenhall resigned in the offseason, but their rebuild has not gotten off to the same start as Duke’s. Virginia sits at 2-2 on the year and has the second to last scoring offense in the ACC.
Despite that, Duke cannot forget that Virginia quarterback Brennan Armstrong can throw a deep ball as well as anyone in college football. Armstrong has not surpassed the 300-yard marker once this year, but that’s something he did in 10 of Virginia’s 11 matchups a season ago. And if a reminder is needed, this is one of many dimes he threw en route to ripping North Carolina in 2021 for 554 yards on a 72% completion rate.

ACC football power rankings: Clemson, NC State hold top two spots entering top-10 showdown in Week 5 (247sports.com; Marsdale)
Clemson and NC State both picked up wins this past weekend in contrasting fashion over vastly different opponents. The Tigers rode quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei’s breakout game to a 51-45 double overtime win over Wake Forest and the Wolfpack took care of business at home against UConn. Both of them enter Saturday’s showdown at Clemson 4-0 and ranked inside the top 10 of the AP Top 25, and also headline this week's ACC power rankings.
“I feel like the offense — every time we step on the field we get better and better and better,” Uiagalelei said, in part, about his confidence growing every time he steps on the field. “I’m excited to see what we do next week. Excited for the preparation for NC State. Excited just for us to get better — learn from our mistakes and learn from what we did great today and just continue to keep building.”
In other news, Miami suffered a disastrous loss at home to Middle Tennessee State, while North Carolina’s defense could not stop a nosebleed against Notre Dame. A 27-10 loss at UCF was also the final straw for Geoff Collins at Georgia Tech.

1. CLEMSON TIGERS (4-0, 1)
es has the defense bailed out Clemson since the start of the 2021 season? It happens more often than not it seems like. That was far from the case Saturday, as the Tigers yielded 447 yards — the highest total for the unit in each of the last two seasons. Uiagalelei made play, after play, after play as the offense for the Tigers answered the bell every time Sam Hartman and company drove down the field for the Demon Deacons. Uiagalelei and the Tigers face their biggest test yet when they welcome the Wolfpack this weekend.2. NC STATE WOLFPACK (4-0, 2)
After holding strong at home against a now 3-1 Texas Tech team in Week 3, the Wolfpack got their final tuneup before conference play against UConn, defeating the Huskies 41-10. Now comes the real test, as NC State travels to Clemson for its biggest game in quite some time. An upset win would put the Wolfpack in the driver's seat in the ACC Atlantic Division and squarely in the mix for the College Football Playoff. It is safe to say this would be the biggest win for head coach Dave Doeren since he arrived in Raleigh from Northern Illinois in 2013.3. FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES (4-0,3)
Is there any head coach in college football having a better year than Mike Norvell? The Seminoles got a big win before the weekend even started, landing the No. 26 player for the Class of 2023 in wide receiver Hykeem Williams. Norvell and company followed that up with a 44-14 shellacking of Boston College — a game in which it led 31-0 at halftime. The Seminoles cracked the AP Top 25 for the first time in four years and stay at No. 3 in this week’s power rankings. After last year’s disastrous 0-4 start which included a home loss to Jacksonville State, Norvell was 3-10 over his first 13 games in Tallahassee. Since then? 9-3, with seven of those wins coming against Power Five opponents. They had nine such wins from the start of the Willie Taggart era in 2018 through 2021’s 0-4 start.4. PITTSBURGH PANTHERS (3-1, 4)
Pittsburgh got Kedon Slovis back from injury against Rhode Island, a game in which the Rams moved the ball a little better than expected in the first half. Not to worry, as their only touchdown in the second half came with a minute left in the game and the Panthers leading by 21. Slovis was 20-of-27 passing for 187 yards, throwing no touchdowns or interceptions, but he did not need to do much. Pitt gashed Rhode Island for 271 yards and five touchdowns on the ground, highlighted by 177 yards and four scores from Israel Abanikanda. The Panthers get Georgia Tech at home Saturday night, who come in off the firing of Collins.5. SYRACUSE ORANGE (4-0, 7)
Speaking of coaches having a great year like Norvell, Dino Babers is having one on a similar level. Facing pressure coming into the season, Babers has responded by having his team at 4-0 after the Orange picked up their second ACC win and third Power Five win in the first third of the 2022 season. They were able to hold off Virginia and are poised to be 5-0 after facing FCS member Wagner, a program that has not won a game since 2018....

The "consideration" is about $8M/school/year of new revenue from the ACC Network (which wouldn't have existed without the GoR). Whether that's "enough" is a matter of opinion, I guess.

Wake Forest HC hopes ACC makes "right decision" on traveling to play FSU (tomahawknation.com; Montalvo)
The Florida State Seminoles are hot. With the ‘Noles football team undefeated and leading ESPN’s Strength of Record ratings, it is clear now is not the best time to face FSU. Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson apparently agrees.
“You certainly hope that the ACC will make the right decision,” he said on Tuesday. ”If they don’t, we will. We’re not going to travel down there and put anyone at risk.
We’re monitoring the weather. Obviously this in the league’s hands and Florida State’s hands. You would hope they make the right decision, but if we feel there’s any danger to our players, we’re not going to go.”
Clawson brought up the risk of travel with the approach of Hurricane Ian on the Florida peninsula. But Wake Forest isn’t playing USF (who has relocated), the Demon Deacons are scheduled to play FSU. In Tallahassee.

By all accounts, Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei has a prodigious arm.
But even he may be challenged Saturday by Hurricane Ian, which could impact the Tigers’ game against ACC rival NC State at Memorial Stadium.
“If it’s 50-mile-an-hour winds or something, DJ’s got a good arm, but I don’t know if it’s that good,” Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said Tuesday. “I don’t know if anybody’s going to set any passing records if we get in a situation like that. But you’ve got to find a way to win the game regardless of what the elements are.”
High winds and heavy rainfall are projected for the Upstate on Saturday, when No. 5 Clemson (4-0, 2-0 ACC) battles No. 10 NC State (4-0, 0-0) in a nationally televised 7:30 game on ABC.
“I have no idea what the weather’s going to be like,” Swinney said. “It sounds like it’s going to be wet and all that, but it’ll be wet for both sides.”
And that's just fine with Clemson running back Will Shipley.
"I'm freaking pumped, to be honest with you," Shipley said. "I'm so excited, whatever environment, whatever conditions are thrown our way, this football team is so ready to go. I'm so ready to go."

Hurricane Ian is already forcing changes to this weekend's college football schedule across the Southeast.
But, so far, no moves have been made to two big ACC games that could be impacted by the storm. No. 10 NC State is scheduled to play at No. 5 Clemson on Saturday night. No. 22 Wake Forest visits No. 23 Florida State on Saturday afternoon.
Officials at NC State and Wake Forest said the schools are monitoring the situation, but have not yet altered their travel plans. NC State is thinking through alternate travel plays if necessary.
"You certainly hope the ACC office makes the right decision," Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson said Tuesday. "If they don't, we will. We're not going to travel down there and put anybody at risk.

ACC Football: Will Georgia Tech pursue Deion Sanders? (usatoday.com)
The latest coaching job to open is in the Atlantic Coast Conference as Georgia Tech parted ways with head coach Geoff Collins and athletic director Todd Stansbury.
The Yellow Jackets job is now near the top of, if not at the top of the list of openings right now. With Arizona State and Nebraska also needing head coaches, the Yellow Jackets are expected to move fast and there’s one name reportedly at the top of the list: Deion Sanders.
The former Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Falcons star is the top choice for the Yellow Jackets per a report from Carl Reed of 247Sports:
Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports echoed those thoughts as well, meaning there is legitimacy to these rumors.
The current Jackson State head coach could make a move up to the ACC and take over a team in Atlanta where he can recruit some of the top talent in the country. Landing Sanders would be huge for Georgia Tech and potentially help the program reclaim some of that success that is lost.

While the ACC has no doubt had some down years in the past, that doesn't appear to be the case in 2022. At least through the season's first four weeks.
Currently, five ACC teams are ranked inside the Top 25, with four of those programs residing in the Atlantic Division, highlighted by Clemson and NC State, both of which are in the Top 10.
The No. 5 Tigers and No. 10 Wolfpack are now set to do battle on Saturday night inside of Death Valley, in what is the biggest college football game of the weekend. It will mark the first time in the long, storied history of the Textile Bowk that the two teams will square off with both ranked inside of the Top 10.
On Tuesday, Dabo Swinney was asked about the strength of the Atlantic this season and the head coach made his feelings clear, insisting some of the nation's best quarterbacks reside in the ACC, including NC State's Devin Leary, who the Tigers will see this weekend.

Free fall foliage shuttles to the Adirondacks High Peaks region, starting this weekend (PS; Hernandez)
If you want all the fun of leaf peeping without the stressful battle for the best parking spot, a new, free shuttle service for visitors traveling to see the fall foliage in the Adirondacks starting this weekend.
The fall foliage shuttle route will begin at the Frontier Town Gateway, conveniently located near the DEC Frontier Town Campground, Equestrian and Day Use Area in North Hudson. From there, it will stop at the trailheads of Giant Mountain, Roaring Brook Falls, and Rooster Comb, as well as the Marcy Field Parking Area.
The Essex County service will operate on a loop Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1 and 2, and Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, Oct. 8, 9, and 10 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. No reservations are needed and the shuttles are first come, first serve.
Pets will not be permitted on the shuttles.
This is one of many initiatives being deployed in the Adirondacks and Catskills this year to help protect public safety and promote sustainable recreation.
“To ensure the safety of residents and visitors in the Adirondacks, New York and our many local partners are launching a new October shuttle that will help prevent congestion along crowded corridors in the High Peaks and continue to provide a quality outdoors experience this foliage season,” Governor Hochul said yesterday in a press release.
The fall foliage shuttle in North Hudson is an expansion of the Route 73 Hiker Shuttle program, which first launched in 2021. Running on weekends and holidays from all summer through Oct. 10, it has the same stops, but the hiker shuttle leaves from Marcy Field.
