Welcome to Ben Franklin Day!

Founding Father Benjamin Franklin was born on this day in 1706, in Boston, making today Ben Franklin Day. He was a polymath, or expert in many subjects. Some of the titles that could be given to him are inventor, scientist, politician, diplomat, civic activist, printer, author, postmaster, and mapmaker. He also founded or was a part of many organizations and groups.

Franklin was the tenth and youngest son of a soap and candle maker, Josiah Franklin, and Josiah's second wife, Abiah Folger. The elder Franklin wanted his son to follow the path of a preacher, but did not have the money to send him to school. Benjamin only attended school up until the age of ten, when he began working full-time in his father's shop. At the age of twelve he was sent to apprentice his older brother James, who was a printer. James started The New England Courant in Boston when Benjamin was fifteen. Benjamin wanted to be printed in the paper, but James would not allow it. So, he wrote letters under name of Silence Dogood, a fictional widow, and slid them under the print shop door at night. The fourteen letters he wrote were published; they gave advice and were filled with critical observations of the world. Benjamin eventually confessed to writing them, and James was not happy. Later, after harassment and beating at the hands of his brother, Benjamin ended up running away to New York, and then ended up in Philadelphia in 1723.

Ty Keyes Discusses Syracuse Visit, Decision Timeframe (SI; McAllister)

Syracuse football hosted Southern Miss transfer quarterback Ty Keyes for an official visit over the weekend.

"The best part for me personally was being down there, looking at the Dome and watching that basketball game," Keyes said. "It's a great environment. I love it out there."

The game day atmosphere showed Keyes the fan support Syracuse teams receive.

"To me, it was pretty loud," Keyes said. "They were down at one point, the boys were down, but they came back and the fans were cheering them on the whole way. That shows, right there, a lot about Syracuse."

During the visit, the Syracuse coaches spent a lot of time expressing how much they want Keyes including his fit with the program and offensive scheme.

"They expressed that a lot to me, that they really want me," Keyes said. "We watched film, broke down a couple plays that they run. They actually fit the type of player that I am."

Keyes also said he was impressed by Syracuse's facilities and enjoyed speaking with the strength and conditioning staff. He said he felt welcomed with open arms.

Syracuse Orange news: 4-star football offers, huge lacrosse honor, more (itlh; Adler)

In recent days, Syracuse Orange football coaches have offered scholarships to a variety of high-school prospects, including several four-star players on the west coast.

Now, there is obviously a massive difference between the ‘Cuse making an offer and the team landing a commitment, but it’s still encouraging to see the Syracuse Orange football staff pursuing top-flight prospects.

Per their Twitter pages, the ‘Cuse has offered 2024 four-star wide receiver Xavier Jordan, 2025 four-star athlete LaMason Waller lll, and 2025 four-star wide receiver Phillip Bell III.

Here’s a little background on each of these new Syracuse Orange football recruits, courtesy of the 247Sports Web site. The 6-foot-1, 165-pound Jordan attends Cathedral High School in Los Angeles. He is No. 74 nationally, No. 11 at wide receiver, and No. 11 in California.

The 6-foot-2, 170-pound Waller is out of Sultana High School in Hesperia, Calif. He is the No. 99 overall prospect, No. 9 at the athlete position, and No. 14 in California.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Bell goes to the Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento, Calif. In his class, he is highly rated, at No. 34 nationwide, No. 9 at wide receiver, and No. 6 in California. We’ll certainly continue to track the recruiting processes of these three excellent players.

10 burning questions as Clemson enters the offseason - Saturday Road (saturdayroad.com; Blackmon)

Clemson reclaimed the ACC Championship in 2022, capturing Dabo Swinney’s 7th conference title in 8 seasons after a rare year on the outside looking in during the 2021 season.

Clemson’s 11-win season did not include a trip to the College Football Playoff, though, with the Tigers missing the party for the second consecutive season after advancing to the previous 6 editions of the Playoff.

That alone was enough to make 2022 a frustrating one for some fans of Clemson’s program, and those frustrations were compounded when the Tigers were routed by Tennessee in the Orange Bowl on Dec. 30.

While winning the ACC championship matters, Swinney’s program has become a victim of its own success in some respects. When you make the College Football Playoff 6 seasons in a row, and suddenly lose 6 games in 2 seasons, people begin to wonder what’s wrong.

It is a bit too on the sunshine pumping side of things to suggest nothing, but rumors of a long-term Clemson demise are likely too cynical. Nonetheless, the debate is fascinating, and it makes for a great discussion of 10 burning questions facing Clemson as the Tigers enter the offseason.

1. Is the Clemson “dynasty” dead?

After Georgia’s 65-7 win in the College Football Playoff championship game secured the Dawgs back-to-back national championships, is any college football dynasty outside of Athens, Georgia truly alive? Georgia’s dynasty is just beginning, and the ebb and flow of things means that naturally, Alabama and Clemson, the powers who dominated the sport’s prior decade, may be beginning to wane.

Then again, Dabo Swinney is only 53, just 6 years older than Kirby Smart at Georgia, and the chances his “dynasty” has staying power may be greater than what Nick Saban, now in his 70s, has built at Alabama.

The stark reality, however, is that Clemson has lost 6 games over the past 2 seasons. At most programs, that’s a cause for celebration. At Clemson, those 6 losses in 2 years equal the total number of losses in the 5 seasons that preceded them. That’s a drop-off, and it is one that has cost Clemson Playoff appearances in the prior 2 seasons.

Getting back to the top of the mountain, and back into the College Football Playoff, which will be a 4-team tournament just once more before expanding to 12 in 2024, is Clemson’s main priority in 2023.

2. What difference does Garrett Riley make?

Dabo Swinney fired Brandon Streeter, a bright offensive mind who had been with the Tigers’ program since 2015, a move that signaled Swinney’s refusal to let the Clemson dynasty burn out in the dead of night. He brought in Garrett Riley, architect of one of the nation’s most prolific offenses at TCU in 2022.

The move feels similar to when Swinney parted ways with a hot young offensive coordinator named Billy Napier after the 2010 season and turned things over to Chad Morris, who very quickly elevated the play of an offense that was talented but inconsistent under Napier. Championships followed, though Morris was gone by the time national titles arrived.

Riley’s job is to help Clemson compete for national titles once again.

To do that, Clemson must maximize the play of freshman Cade Klubnik (more below), while coaxing more consistent production out of a run game that ranked 47th nationally in rushing offense and 50th in success rate despite NFL type talents in Will Shipley and Phil Mafah at running back.

Riley has a host of playmakers at his disposal, which Streeter had to wait to mature for much of 2022. But the Tigers aren’t perfect. They could use the portal– something Swinney hasn’t done much of– to help.

Virginia Tech football: Hokies land talented running back from the transfer portal (gobblercountry.com; Manning)

The Virginia Tech Hokies continued their impressive work in the NCAA transfer portal Friday, adding running back Bhayshul Tuten, formerly of North Carolina AT&T.

Tuten, a 5-foot-11, 195-pound sophomore from Paulsboro, New Jersey, has two years of eligibility remaining. He announced his commitment on Twitter.

Tuten actually flipped from Boston College. He initially committed to the Eagles but changed his mind after a quiet visit to Blacksburg recently.

It’s been a change of plans! pic.twitter.com/EjeetdHQAq
— Bhayshul Tuten (@bhayshul) January 14, 2023

What are the Hokies getting in Tuten?

This felt like a quiet move by the Hokies because Tuten looks to be highly undervalued. As a freshman in 2021, Tuten rushed for 215 yards and three touchdowns. He also caught 10 passes for 230 yards, including a 92-yard touchdown.

Tuten broke out in 2022, carrying the football 208 times for 1,363 yards and 13 touchdowns. In addition, Tuten had 31 receptions for 342 yards and another four touchdowns. He also returned kicks and punts, giving Virginia Tech another experienced option on special teams.

Brett Seither, Georgia TE transfer, reportedly announces ACC destination (saturdaydownsouth.com; Farner)

Brett Seither has found a new home.

The former Georgia tight end will reunite with former Georgia staffer-turned-Georgia Tech offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner. He’ll have 1 season of eligibility remaining. Seither, who committed to Georgia over Alabama out of high school, is a native of Clearwater, Florida (Clearwater Central Catholic).

A 3-star recruit out of high school, he did not record any statistics for the Dawgs in 2022. In 2021, he made a pair of catches against FCS Charleston Southern — including his 1st career touchdown — and a catch against Missouri.

As a true freshman in 2019, he played in a pair of games. That was followed by action in 3 games in 2020: Arkansas, Missouri, and Cincinnati in the Peach Bowl. Against the Razorbacks, he recorded a 12-yard catch.

Miami Hurricanes News: FB adds TE, Hoops hosts Syracuse (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

The Miami Hurricanes football team received a commitment from eighth-year tight end Cameron McCormick from Oregon. McCormick was on the Oregon roster all four seasons Miami head coach Mario Cristobal led the Ducks. The Miami basketball team returns home to host Syracuse on Sunday night.

McCormick has had significant injuries throughout his college career that caused him to miss the entire 2019 and 2020 seasons, play one game in 2018 and two in 2021 before suffering season-ending injuries. McCormick had 10 receptions for 66 yards and three touchdowns during the 2022 season.

Miami gains an experienced player to add to a mostly inexperienced TE group. The Miami Hurricanes return Elijah Arroyo who missed most of the 2022 season with an injury, Jaleel Skinner, Khalil Brantley and Dominic Mammarelli. Miami signed TEs Jackson Carver and Riley Williams in the 2023 class.

The Miami basketball team returns to the Watsco Center on Monday night to host Syracuse after losing at North Carolina State on Saturday. Miami will not return home until they host Virginia Tech on January 31. The Hurricanes play on Saturday at Duke, January 24 at Florida State and January 28 at Pittsburgh.

In addition I want to thank @coachstroud @JasonTaylor and @CoachStrong_ for helping me with this opportunity!

The Miami women’s basketball team won its fifth straight on Sunday with a 55-43 victory over Wake Forest. Miami outscored Wake Forest 13-2 in the second quarter to take a 25-15 halftime lead. Destiny Harden returned for Miami after a recent injury to lead the Hurricanes with 13 points.

After stating he would make an announcement on his commitment on Sunday five-star cornerback Cormani McClain who is committed to Miami did not have any news. McClain has been trending all weekend as he was reportedly visiting Colorado which he finally confirmed on Sunday per On3.

Highest Bowl Win Pct

Did you expect these teams?

Which programs have had the most postseason success?

Here are the highest bowl winning percentages (minimum 25 games)!#GoUtes #GoPokes pic.twitter.com/4phDNxE5cI

It should be no surprise to see Florida State near the top of this list at #5 - the Noles have been very good for a long time. You may find #9 Syracuse a little more unexpected - but think how little respect they get and the Orange have "underrated" written all of that program. Seeing Georgia Tech at #13 - I can't say I expected that, either (they must have included plenty of games from the distant past!).
Winsipedia sees it just a little differently:

6th Wake Forest (.647)
12th Florida State (.617)
24th Georgia Tech (.556)
31st Louisville (.540)
34th Clemson (.531)
40th Boston College (.519)
44th NC State (.515)
----------------------
49th Notre Dame (.487)
56th Duke (.467)
60th Miami (.452)
81st N Carolina (.405)
81st Pitt (.405)
89th Virginia Tech (.382)
90th Virginia (.381)

source: Winsipedia - College football database of all-time records, wins, and statistics

What does all this mean? TBH, not much. One thing, I guess, is that bowl teams have to be winning or break-even teams, so the competition is tougher. How matchups are assigned, though, is almost pseudo random! I mean, is Wake Forest better than Florida State - or did they just play easier bowl games?

How Florida State Football Has A Strong Case to Push for ACC Title and CFP Spot in 2023 Season

CFB coaches expect FSU to push Clemson in the ACC (theclemsoninsider.com; Staff)

ESPN published an article this week with college football coaches making predictions for the 2023 season (subscription required).

Among those things that coaches are expecting to see next season is that Florida State will push Clemson for ACC dominance.

“They’re getting a s—load of recruits,” a Power Five coach said of Florida State, via Adam Rittenberg, who authored the aforementioned article for ESPN. “They’ve got dudes; they’re getting better.”

In 2022, Clemson (11-3, 9-0 ACC) captured its seventh ACC Championship in the last eight seasons, while Florida State hasn’t claimed the conference crown since 2014. That’s also when the Seminoles earned their most recent victory over the Tigers.

However, according to ESPN, certain coaches believe FSU is catching up with Clemson in the ACC and could even surpass the Tigers in Mike Norvell’s fourth season in 2023.

“The front-runners are Florida State,” an ACC defensive assistant said, via Rittenberg. “They’ve got all the pieces.”

FSU (10-3, 5-3 ACC) won its last six games in 2022 to reach its first 10-win season in six years and will return quarterback Jordan Travis, among a handful of other standouts, next season. The Noles were active in the transfer portal last offseason and have continued to be.

Clemson, meanwhile, won at least 10 games for the 12th straight season and won at least 11 games for the eighth time in 11 seasons. The Tigers beat FSU, 34-28, at Doak Campbell Stadium in October and haven’t lost to FSU since Sept. 20, 2014 — a 23-17 overtime loss in Tallahassee when the Noles were ranked No. 1 and Jimbo Fisher was the head coach.

Links, news, and rumors - 2023 Jan 17

From SI:AM 1/16/2023...

[Former Duke QB] Daniel Jones had the best game of his career in the biggest game of his career, becoming the first quarterback in postseason history to throw for at least 300 yards and two touchdowns and also rush for at least 70 yards. In August, the franchise declined to pick up Jones’s fifth-year option, making his future in New York cloudy following this season. And you couldn’t really blame them after three underwhelming seasons. But the No. 6 pick in the 2019 draft is making it hard for the Giants not to keep him around, Conor Orr writes.

Jones was always a good quarterback. It took only four years for the NFL to figure that out. Enjoy pretending you thought otherwise. You’ll be in good company this week.

Facing the Eagles with a spot in the NFC title game on the line is a completely different challenge than going up against a Vikings defense that is, in Orr’s words, “among the worst in recent NFL history, less reliable than that wooden boardwalk roller coaster on the pier.” But here’s the thing we now know about Jones: He’ll give the Giants more than a fighting chance.

The other young QB who made major headlines this weekend was [former Clemson QB] Trevor Lawrence. Like Jones, he was a high draft pick (No. 1 in 2021), had a tough start to his career and is enjoying success under a new regime in ’22. Unlike Jones, he had to march his team back from four interceptions and a 27–0 deficit to win a playoff game. Orr, again, writes:

We can call Saturday, and Jacksonville’s 31–30 wild-card win over the Chargers, the night Lawrence arrived in the NFL. And, like the self-help guru says, it necessitated a trip through the worst of it all. Take your pick of the platitudes. It’s always darkest before dawn or, as John Wooden said, things work out best for those who make the best out of the way things work out.

Jim Phillips

From CBS Sports: Big Ten commissioner candidates: Gene Smith, Jim Phillips among top options to replace Kevin Warren

Who will follow Warren in the Big Ten? Here are some top options.

Jim Phillips, ACC commissioner: Phillips was hired as the commissioner of the ACC in 2021, which, on the surface, makes him seem like an unlikely candidate. Don't be so sure of that. Phillips was the clubhouse leader last time until the Big Ten presidents made a left turn and picked Warren. The Big Ten is a better job with more resource and a more promising future, and it isn't stuck in the mud with a long-term, ESPN-friendly media rights deal. Additionally, Phillips has ties to the Big Ten and Midwest region. He was the athletic director at Northwestern from 2008-21 and at Northern Illinois from 2004-08.

Other Top Candidates:

  • Burke Magnus, ESPN television executive
  • Mark Silverman, Fox television executive
  • Gene Smith, Ohio State athletic director
  • Kerry Kenny, Big Ten executive

Did Clemson Hire the Wrong OC? (RX; HM)

Did Clemson Hire the Wrong OC?

There are already people posting comments on the internet to the effect that Clemson's new Offensive Coordinator, Garrett Riley, was a bad choice because his offense only scored 7 points against Georgia in the National Championship Game. First, let's look at what the Horned Frogs typically scored.

2022 TCU Offense

How many points did TCU score in 2022?
vs Colorado...38
vs Tarleton St...59
vs S. Methodist..42
vs Oklahoma...55
vs Kansas.....38
vs Oklahoma St...43 (2OT)
vs Kansas State..38
vs W. Virginia...41
vs Texas Tech...34
vs Texas......17
vs Baylor.....29
vs Iowa State...62
vs Kansas St*...31 (OT)
vs Michigan...51
vs Georgia....07
Average PPG...39
* Big XII Championship Game

By the way, the 39 points per game average in 2022 represented a 10 ppg increase from 2021. Coach Riley was the OC at TCU for just the one season.
Teams that held TCU more than one point under their season average: Texas Tech(-4), Baylor(-10), Kansas St(-8, Big XII CCG), and Georgia(-32, CFP National Championship). Only two of those were losses: Kansas State (Big XII CCG) and Georgia (NCG) - both in red above.
Now scoring 31 against Kansas State is hardly a failure for the offense. I'd call it a below-average performance, but nothing to be overly-concerned about; the Bulldogs shut a lot of teams down.

2022 Georgia Defense

How many points did the Georgia Defense give up?
vs Oregon.....03
vs Samford......00
vs S Carolina...07
vs Kent State...22
vs Missouri.....22
vs Auburn.....10
vs Vanderbilt...00
vs Florida......20
vs Tennessee....13
vs Mississippi St..19
vs Kentucky.....06
vs Georgia Tech...14
vs LSU...30
vs Ohio State...41
vs TCU...07
Average PPG.....14

Teams which scored more than 21 against Georgia: Kent State(!), Missouri(!), LSU, and Ohio State. Rather than ask how did Georgia hold TCU to 7 points, maybe we should be asking how did the Buckeyes score 41 against them!

Jeffrey Scruggs, whose father taught at Syracuse University's Maxwell School, has been elected chairman of the university's Board of Trustees. Scruggs, who graduated from Nottingham High School, is the first person of color to head the board. Photo by Jeffrey Scruggs.Special to Syracuse.com

SyraQs: Groundbreaking SU trustee chair was son of a groundbreaking SU professor (PS; $; Coin)

Jeffrey Scruggs was recently named chair of the Syracuse University Board of Trustees. Scruggs, a Goldman Sachs executive who lives in New York City with his wife and two children, grew up in Syracuse, where his father, Otey Scruggs, taught at SU’s Maxwell school. From his office overlooking Manhattan, Scruggs recently spoke with syracuse.com via Zoom about growing up in Syracuse, the challenges of increasing diversity on campus, and why he went to Harvard instead of SU.

Tell me about your experience in Syracuse. Where did you live, for how long?

My father came to Syracuse University in 1969, so I had not yet started in school. We moved right before I started in kindergarten. I grew up on Genesee Park Drive, which is why I always call myself a campus rat. My mother worked at Upstate Medical Center, so you talk about really centering much of our life in that Syracuse University area.

I’m a Syracuse public school kid from beginning to end. I was the first class of Nottingham high school that started in ninth grade, and I graduated from there in 1981.

Your father taught at Maxwell for a long time.

He taught here for 25 years. He taught history, primarily American history of various types. As I’m sure you know, he was chairman of the History Department for four years, from ‘86 to ‘90.

He was the first African American to be head of that department, correct?

I believe that’s correct. His real love though, was teaching, so I don’t think if you asked him in a moment of truth he’d say that administrating was his first love. It was a challenge, but then he was more than happy to go back to the classroom after that.

You are the first person of color to be the head of the SU board of trustees. What you see as the significance of that?

I think the first thing is the trust that was displayed by the other board members – it shows that color was not an issue for them. I am hopefully continuing to lead the board forward and the fact that I am African American, am I proud of it? Yes. I certainly am proud. Do I think that people will look at that and say, “Wow, there’s been progress in Syracuse?” Sure, and I’m proud of that. Hopefully, if it encourages people to come to Syracuse University and really shows that we are a diverse university and inviting to all as we want to maintain that we are, that is a good thing.
