It’s my understanding, and I may be incorrect, but the athletic department has to rent the use of the Dome. Not all of the season ticket money goes to the athletic department, only the donations. This may have changed, but that has been the arrangement.

For years I’ve said that SU is the equivalent of a small market team in pro sports.

Now that college sports *are* pro sports we literally are a small market team.

It’s not that small market teams can’t compete. We see them do it every year. It’s that they don’t have the resources to mitigate mistakes that the large market teams do.

So we need very smart coaches and player acquisition folks to make sure we’re operating with high efficiency.

Well, it sounds like we have invested in a talent analysis / acquisition guy, and an analytics person or two for each major sport. It's hard to believe we didn't even have a sports nutrition program until this past year.

Are we big time? Some people are trying to improve things, but there is so much anti-sports inertia within the university community.

This is so boring. I mean, YES, we do not make the TV money that they do in the SEC and Big 10. Neither do hundreds of other schools.

We will NEVER make as much money as them. NEVER. So, if that's your standard, then forget it.

We have the biggest basketball arena in the country. We own the football stadium, it's on campus, and we don't have to pay rent to the stadium where we play, like say Pitt has to do, playing in a pro stadium. Or UConn, St. John's and so many other schools, when they play their big games in the local pro sports arena.

Pitt, in case you've forgotten, is also an ACC team.
No other ACC teams, and nearly no other college teams in any league, sell beer at their games. We do. How much more money do we make from that?

Aside from Notre Dame, we sell more merchandise than any other private school, about neck-and-neck with Duke for 2nd. Brigham Young, I think, is next.

There are 22,000 students at SU - 16K undergrad, and 6K grad students. The average cost of attendance, including room & board is $85K per year. That equals $1.87 BILLION per year.

If Syracuse chooses not to invest more in its sports programs than it does, it's their choice. But there is sure as hell plenty of money to do it. For a school that's not a State University, Syracuse has deep pockets, lots and lots of wealthy alumni and a national brand.

Spare us the crocodile tears.

I'm mainly an observer in this thread, but I know for sure that the alcohol information isn't even close to correct anymore. Probably a minor detail in the big picture, but wanted to get that out there so other people aren't misled.

This is the Fran Brown approach he was very vocal about money and that the program needs it bad. Fran didn't just say it in private he said it in public. Red needs to take the same approach as soon as possible.

It's maddening that our football coach has to go around like a politician begging for donations when the school is sitting on a $1.85 Billion endowment. I recognize you can't use that for NIL but it sure seems like it could be tapped into to upgrade facilities.

But what I'm hearing is that we are in a decline largely of our own choosing and the question is will there be anything left to save when Syverud retires/leaves? Question 2 - When that happens, will the board of trustees replace him with someone else that is ambivalent to sports?

I recall Joyce telling us that they had a record number of applications in the Fall of 2003 after we won the championship. They raised tuition by 6% for undergrads and 8.2% for grads that year. They usually raise it by around 4% per year, so they cashed in while they were hot.

This doesn’t get talked about enough. 10% increases in cost per year, 10% drop in prestige and level of education. Every time I see what they’re charging for a year of school and what the student gets all I can think is oh well. My kid will be a Cuse fan but they won’t be living on campus or taking classes there. Exaggerating some but it’s not like it used to be. Not even considering interest rates.

I was under the impression they could be used for construction and infrastructure upgrades but freely admit I don't know anything about them. Syverud has done some good things for veterans, but I can't really think of anything else I would put in the W column for him.

Yup. Fran is good at fundraising. I’ve seen it in action. It’s a huge part of being a coach. Red can’t be shy about asking / demanding for what he needs.

He does care about the athletics from what I’ve been told because it matters for academic enrollment. It’s a big part of the student body experience. There will be some changes on that front soon that will help direct more money to the AD if I understand correctly.

They know they should, but our job as friends and donors is to introduce them to other friends who have resources and money to donate. Now that I live back in cuse, I a constantly connecting people with Alex, Griff and Red. And these are not alums either. They are friends of the community and want to get involved to help. The coaches have their events to raise Money and will have their usual donors, but it’s about having new ideas and events to raise money.

I’ve met with Alex a lot over last 2 months about doing 2 high power events next year. We are going to get super creative on the event so it’s not just “SU NiL golf tournament” that has been done 100x over. There’s so much that goes into it.

I try to not dive too much into the struggles and try to be vague, but maybe being more open will help more. Right now I’m working with my brother to raise money for new gym equipment. Other programs right now have mobile gyms that are traveling in tractor trailers so the kids can work out at all times on the road. This is not even close to an option for cuse right now. They have 2 working treadmills right now. 2. That’s sad. So there’s efforts to get the workout equipment and that will be a big step up. But a lot of programs don’t need to worry about that.

Alex is going to be a powerhouse for the program because he speaks up when you get to meet him. He has some great ideas to get more donors and more people involved. The staff has never had that person that speaks up for necessities. My brother and I were able to donate to something we had no idea what they needed and would never have guessed it in a million years that it was a need until Alex brought it up.

Jake is spot on about what they need and the amount. I’ll say this now- cuse already has $1m lined up for a center for next year through NIL. But so many donations are going to NIL and not the operation of the program so we need to look at operation of the program and the program needs as well. But this is the hard part with NIL these days.

I will be sure to be more vocal going forward so we can band together and help where we can help

Yes, read his last two senate reports. Focused primarily on the importance of athletics and keeping SU in the top echelon. He understands completely how important they are to the school as a tool for recruitment and alumni engagement.

Certainly not all, but I’ve seen him at several games too. I’ve yet to see him rooting for the other team.

They have more than that in the dorm fitness centers.

What are they doing with their budget? Don't they have anything set aside for maintaining equipment?

Some planet fitness memberships could work. Get the black membership and you only have to get half the memberships as you can bring a guest. Can also go to any Planet Fitness as well.

No question this guy is my most unliked person at the university. The guy hates athletics. Could care less. Every single week is a different battle and he’s such a nerd and doofus and so uncomfortable to be around. He has done zero here.

Also for those that don’t know- he’s building a program and school that is not currently at SU which is “his baby” and he is doing everything he can to “get funds” for this school. He has combined 3 massive departments so far and combined departments from Falk so that money can be allocated for what he’s building. So that gives you a good indication about what this guy cares about. Hes a clown and I can’t wait for him to be gone
