FSU Postgame

Me. I don’t. Lol 23 shots. No defense. 5 missed layups. Shooting less than 20 percent from 3 in last 7 games. He lost the team 3 other games recently. I can keep going lol
I don't dislike JJ, but I dislike his game. Today was nice seeing 2 left handed layup attempts. But, his shot needs a complete 100% overhaul. I don't think he can do it. He's fast, he's athletic, but he doesn't play consistent winning basketball

Cuffe was robbed! Every single foul call. The last one, he was literally elbowed to the ground. He deserved that bracket.

He was playing great defense using his feet to get in front of the offensive player, who would push off time and again. A lot of BS calls that went the wrong way.

Ha ha, this is so good - you do know that we won today, right? You do know that, right?

You do know we have a losing record and will finish the season with 19 losses, right? Most losses in 60 years, right?

I'm glad we won the game. We played pretty well. We have been playing better.

I just wish we played with this much purpose as we have these last few games from the very beginning of the season.

1st Half - Pounded the paint with Eddie and Davis = Big Lead
2nd Half - Stopped going inside and resorted to JJ ISO game = FSU comeback

Just lucky Eddie and Davis got us a big enough lead that JJ couldn't fumble this one away.

It's a useful tool to close out a game, but it can't be your only tool in the box.
Thet took away Eddie and we could not make a jumper. Jaquan driving got swallowed up. Thank goodness JJ can get his own. We were expected to lose, tough calls not going our way and we still won. I really enjoyed my near heart attack but we won so if my life is a little shorter I am OK. For whatever reason our defense is improving. Have to love that. Big test tomorrow night.

If I understand this correctly, the refs were looking at Watkins committing a flagrant foul with his sperm whale arm slapping Cuffe in the face, then decided it wasn't a flagrant foul on Watkins, and then charged Cuffe with a foul. Did I get that right?

Lots of forearms and elbows and Cuffe never gets that call. He's our modern day Marek! But you're right, Taylor too had a couple of iffies.
Those are going to get called, Watkins initiates that contact, and when driving, he throws his chest into the defender forcing a call. It is smart, especially when lacking true skill. But, the refs have to be smarter than that

Yes! Lamp and Davis bullied their way for putbacks. Also, hockey assists or a couple of passes away from the finish was Lamp with his high and low post passing presence. Causes so much attention that it's usually one or two passes away from an open look...but we had problems with open looks tonight. Freebies and open looks. And still was the better team.

I think beating SMU might leave enough of a good feeling for next season. We have played well the last few games, most of the time.

Taylor and Bell were both hot from outside last time we played SMU. We beat them on the boards, and we had more assists. We can beat these guys - or they might not be overlooking us this time and kick our butts.

Red does seem to be playing more players, using more combinations, even if they don't always seem like the best choices.

We want to be hopeful heading into this summer. Big Eddie has actually been a big leader the last few games. Still an "ole" defender, but he can score on the low block.

We have to keep Freeman and have a great portal.

Winning this SMU game would really help.

Beating Clemson would have people feeling very much better about next year, long shot though that may be.

Held on for the win! That’s what matters most. Survive and advance.

I think we’re going to have to figure out how to shoot from outside quickly in this arena to have any chance tomorrow. Don’t think Eddie is built for back to backs (was gassed versus Texas Tech) and Davis can only do so much.

Making a bunch of those layups would be helpful also.

Glad JJ has reeled in the 3 point attempts. He can blow by anyone on SMU so should do the same tomorrow.

Through the first 28 minutes of the game, it was the best defense we played all year. Guys were fighting through screens, switching, pressing out and not letting players get to the rim. That intensity has been missing most of the year. If you were tuning into the game as a casual observer, you would think Syracuse was a good defensive team.

I really wonder what our record would be if we played with that intensity on defense all year, and played through Eddie on offense like we have lately?

considering that stat that we dropped seven ACC games with second half leads, I have to believe we could’ve won five and had a 12 and 8 ACC team, and maybe beat Texas or Georgetown or both.

Unfortunately, we didn’t bring it every night and when we did, we didn’t bring it at the end of the games. We were physically capable, but not mentally.
Yes, the defense was really good! As you say, too bad that the team wasn't doing this 2 months ago.

In this game, where nobody in the opponent could keep Starling from going to the basket, it was a good strategy.

Most teams have somebody who can contain him, though, so having somebody else who can generate offense would be helpful.

Or, hear me out, a scheme that could get shooters open shots or feed the post would be cool too.

I said in the game thread, the only way we lose the game is if Red takes the ball out of Eddie's hands and puts it in JJ's and that is almost what happened. It isn't about the points JJ scored, it is about all the bonehead plays and missed FTs that come with it. We dominated them in the first half because we killed them inside, we went away from that in the 2nd and played their game and let them back in. Bad coaching.
OMG…did you even watch the game! You’re seriously criticizing the coach for putting the ball in the hands of the guy who scored 19 2nd half points and single handidly stopped the Florida St run?

I think the reason it worked so well tonight was because the Fla State bigs had to guard Eddie and Jyare. Both of them had already been established offensively. So they couldn't leave them to pick up Starling, if he got around the corner past the guy guarding him.

If you haven't show you can score in the low post (and we weren't hitting outside shots), that wouldn't work. You only get the lanes to drive when some other part of your offense also requires attention. Otherwise people can sag off you and take away the drive.

Yes, I agree with you; the scheme should establish an inside game, to set up 3 point shots after passing inside-out. Then, when the defense starts rushing out to cover your shooters, that's when the driving lanes opened up. We had a few 3's in the first half, and Eddie was unstoppable. That's what made the driving lanes possible later on.

We need to be able to do all those things if we want to be good again.

Lets not act like he played some great game. There were some incredible boneheadedays by him today that kept FSU close and it took 23 shots to get 27 points. At the end of the day your shooting guard needs to be able to shoot. He was the best player for two teams today.
Cuffe, Bell, Taylor 0-14! Pretty sure it was all JJ tonight in the back court and wing Production.

Also remove his three free throws, and 23 shots for 24 points (with no three pointers) is still above average. When your other guards and wings are 0 for 14, I don’t care if JJ took 30 shots.

Carlos is playing much better but he’s not exactly setting the table for his two guard either. JJ has to do it all on his own.

He is certainly a flawed player, but along with Eddie, he is the best player we have, and the only one of the two that can come back next year. With better players around him, he will be a better player. Still, he is the best two guard we have had at getting to the rim since Triche/waiters. Anyone who doesn’t want him back, might want to reassess.

A lot of people did not want Judah back, and that was the single biggest disaster this season.
