FSU Postgame

Through the first 28 minutes of the game, it was the best defense we played all year. Guys were fighting through screens, switching, pressing out and not letting players get to the rim. That intensity has been missing most of the year. If you were tuning into the game as a casual observer, you would think Syracuse was a good defensive team.

I really wonder what our record would be if we played with that intensity on defense all year, and played through Eddie on offense like we have lately?

considering that stat that we dropped seven ACC games with second half leads, I have to believe we could’ve won five and had a 12 and 8 ACC team, and maybe beat Texas or Georgetown or both.

Unfortunately, we didn’t bring it every night and when we did, we didn’t bring it at the end of the games. We were physically capable, but not mentally.
Yes, the defense was really good! As you say, too bad that the team wasn't doing this 2 months ago.

It's a useful tool to close out a game, but it can't be your only tool in the box.
In this game, where nobody in the opponent could keep Starling from going to the basket, it was a good strategy.

Most teams have somebody who can contain him, though, so having somebody else who can generate offense would be helpful.

Or, hear me out, a scheme that could get shooters open shots or feed the post would be cool too.

I said in the game thread, the only way we lose the game is if Red takes the ball out of Eddie's hands and puts it in JJ's and that is almost what happened. It isn't about the points JJ scored, it is about all the bonehead plays and missed FTs that come with it. We dominated them in the first half because we killed them inside, we went away from that in the 2nd and played their game and let them back in. Bad coaching.
OMG…did you even watch the game! You’re seriously criticizing the coach for putting the ball in the hands of the guy who scored 19 2nd half points and single handidly stopped the Florida St run?

I think the reason it worked so well tonight was because the Fla State bigs had to guard Eddie and Jyare. Both of them had already been established offensively. So they couldn't leave them to pick up Starling, if he got around the corner past the guy guarding him.

If you haven't show you can score in the low post (and we weren't hitting outside shots), that wouldn't work. You only get the lanes to drive when some other part of your offense also requires attention. Otherwise people can sag off you and take away the drive.

Yes, I agree with you; the scheme should establish an inside game, to set up 3 point shots after passing inside-out. Then, when the defense starts rushing out to cover your shooters, that's when the driving lanes opened up. We had a few 3's in the first half, and Eddie was unstoppable. That's what made the driving lanes possible later on.

We need to be able to do all those things if we want to be good again.

Lets not act like he played some great game. There were some incredible boneheadedays by him today that kept FSU close and it took 23 shots to get 27 points. At the end of the day your shooting guard needs to be able to shoot. He was the best player for two teams today.
Cuffe, Bell, Taylor 0-14! Pretty sure it was all JJ tonight in the back court and wing Production.

Also remove his three free throws, and 23 shots for 24 points (with no three pointers) is still above average. When your other guards and wings are 0 for 14, I don’t care if JJ took 30 shots.

Carlos is playing much better but he’s not exactly setting the table for his two guard either. JJ has to do it all on his own.

He is certainly a flawed player, but along with Eddie, he is the best player we have, and the only one of the two that can come back next year. With better players around him, he will be a better player. Still, he is the best two guard we have had at getting to the rim since Triche/waiters. Anyone who doesn’t want him back, might want to reassess.

A lot of people did not want Judah back, and that was the single biggest disaster this season.

Both Taylor and Bell had open shots.

I really liked the clever things the pep band was chanting during the opponent’s free throws. It didn’t change any shots but it was funny. One thing I noticed when I went to my only FF in 2013 is that every school had a distinctive “thing.” We didn’t. I hope they keep this up next year.
I get angry when a dumb team should be good. I laugh when a dumb team really couldn't be good

He single handedly stopped SU's second half run

You realize he won the game
My post was in response to someone saying he is going to get a big bag. He is a guard with the ball in his hands at the end of the game. It was not a critique on this game, just an observation on his game as a whole. He has a.500 or less winning percentage as a college player. Be honest: weren’t you glad Cuffe went to the line. Good move by Autry, Starling misses FTs in close games. I would bet he is 50% or less in close games in the last 4 minutes. (Remember when he missed all 3 a couple of games ago? Cost SU a win.) You can see him tense up. Also, if he misses some FTs early, that’s it for the game. It’s psychological. I hope he gets over it.
Lastly, he makes a lot of careless errors with the ball, like dribbling of his leg in the last 2 minutes.

If I understand this correctly, the refs were looking at Watkins committing a flagrant foul with his sperm whale arm slapping Cuffe in the face, then decided it wasn't a flagrant foul on Watkins, and then charged Cuffe with a foul. Did I get that right?
They initially called the foul on Cuffe. Based on Cuffe saying he got hit in the face they went to the monitor to see if there was a flagrant foul on Watkins. They deemed there wasn’t. Since there was no flagrant on Watkins, by rule they can’t review or take away the initial foul on Cuffe.

Survived and advanced. That's all that matters, ultimately.

No need to pick apart the performance, it's not like this team has aspirations to make a deep run and we need to fix things for that to happen.

Agree. We all know how bad we are.

We've played some good stretches of basketball lately, but offset them with complete mental meltdowns.

I hope Taylor is better tonight and we can limit the panic induced brain stoppages when something starts going wrong.

Has the ACC Tournament bracket they showed during the broadcast annoyed anyone else? Why are the late games not listed at the bottom, and the 7 p.m. game are?

Taylor and Bell are good shooters and they are doing a better job getting the the right players the right kind of shots according to their strengths. (Although they should've gotten the ball to lampkin more)

Yesterday was just weird with Taylor and Bell going o fer

Agree. We're not going to get away with neither Bell nor Taylor not making a 3 tonight.
