FSU/Tennessee cautionary tale

I'm a little nervous about having zero recruiting buzz, despite having only 3 commits on the offensive side of the ball. I haven't heard us mentioned with anyone for a while and I follow this stuff.

The program is at the bottom of the Power 5
Dino’s offense is a dud
Recruiting is at the bottom of the conference
What are the benefits of keeping him and the status quo?
You can't replace someone with no one. I hope Wildhack has a good shortlist on that paper in his pocket if he decides to make a move.

Here’s a shortlist for JW to consider:
Joe Moorhead
Doug Marrone
Bob Chesney
Curt Cignetti
Jeff Monken

Gross wasn't given a choice. The idiot smurf made the call

I love Floyd, but wasn't he also a prominent voice in the room at that Ga Tech bowl fiasco?

Personally I think Dino needs to go but I think wildhack is going to keep him around as long as he can for stability. I can see him forcing Dino to replace Gilbert and have a hand in a new hire. With the portal I’m really nervous in regards to keeping the good players we have. The portal and nil is really going to hurt teams like Syracuse.

If you're a guy like Szmyt (who should just go to the NFL) I can see leaving a place like us to go to a Bama to win on Saturday nights. Guys saber rattle a lot but other teams have good players also.

The ensuing roster turnover and another 4 years of 'getting my guys in here' is also status quo...I'm not saying this is what will happen but it's just as likely.

I don’t know, I saw him on ESPN at halftime of the Champs Bowl, he sure as hell sounded like a guy who wanted to fire P too
He actually would have retained him

Freeze had Liberty going in a few years. Many others have done it. Im sure that 4 wins gets Dino another year so its most likely not an issue. I have no idea about the guys commitment level to the school or community but i dont see him as ever reciprocating in the event he does become successful. Thats my primary problem with him. If he is successful we will still be starting over.

Roster stability is going to be much tougher to maintain with the portal.

For every team and it'll help us to. But kids who leave are generally kids who are not playing. So...

That’s every SU coach from now until eternity. No one who has big success here is going to stick around. Gotta make peace with that.

No one that does great here is sticking around.

Many others? Look, if it was so easy then the linked article wouldn't have been written. FSU and Tennessee would be top 20 programs. Immense resources. Throw in Nebraska to.

My quibble here with Freeze is that he's not exactly a guy of high character and has often been in trouble with the NCAA. None of that would fly here. Nobody wanted Lane Kiffin and he's a guy who'd probably win here. Freeze brought in tons of Juco's and transfers. That wouldn't fly here either. Short term gain, it's not stable longterm. Willis is an Auburn transfer and not a homegrown recruited and developed kid. Liberty is also not exactly piling up wins against good teams. 2020 was covid year when he won. Babers won a lot of games at little schools to.

Freeze can absolutely not be the HC at Syracuse.

It's a non-starter.

The program has been near the bottom of the P5 since there's been a P5, except for that one year (Dino was HC). He also delivered the biggest win in 30 years.

Dino's offense wasn't a dud until it got figured out 2017-2019. It needed a re-imagining, like a pivot. You might think a new OC would be in order. Oh, we have a new one. The pandemic stunted the growth of the offense. Jury is out.

Recruiting is always been at the bottom of the conference. It's systemic and I don't think it's wise to pin that on a coaching staff, 100%. I do fault the staff and HC for the lack of a quality backup QB and some of the OL issues. But what is the expectation here? Top 20? Nope. Top 30? No. Top 40? Maybe.

The benefit is that he knows what he's up against, seems to pivot to solutions to address issues on the staff, and has run a pretty issue-free program. He's a good ambassador for the University. Any time you change coaches, you blow up at least 1 recruiting class, maybe 2. And unlike FSU and Tennessee - we're not a destination for transfers and the claw back takes longer. Stability and talent development are a program like ours friend.

The only HC I'd be open to thinking has a chance to right the ship quickly (he knows what we're up against) and to build the foundation correctly (OL/DL) is the OL coach at Bama. Other than that, it will have to be a 3 year rebuild. Even with Baloney it might be that kind of rebuild if transfers flee or he runs kids out.

Freeze has VA recruiting, the religious nature of Liberty helps with kids sometimes, they have a lot of money floating around, he's a former SEC guy with SEC recruiting connections

Kind of ironic that Kiffin has ended up where Freeze got in trouble.

And much less stringent academic standards. Not that SU is Stanford, but Liberty isn’t Syracuse either when it comes to that, it’s all about the cash and high enrollment

There is no benefit to delaying the inevitable turnover. If they give Dino until the end of the '22 season it just prolongs the time before the next roster turnover is completed.

Unfortunately, the new OC is the same as the old OC. He didn't seek out Tony White-like rebrand for the offense. He just got another one of his guys (and it shows).
