Gerry McNamara needs to be the next coach

Siena certainly have nice facilities, but not as much visibility as a team that plays in the NYC vicinity.

You also become a more practical recruiting choice for a City kid than it is to get them to come up to Albany to play. Their families can still see them in person at Iona, and will have a handful of games on TV.

There is way more upside to the quality of players you can get to a 2nd or 3rd tier school in New York City than you can to a small city in a rural northern state. Just look at home many good programs there are in Philadelphia. Same idea.

But I agree that he is set up to have a great year next year. Then he will be able to have more and better choices available to him a year from now.
It’s still a lateral move and prior coaches have done well at Siena and moved on to bigger jobs. If you do well at Siena, the visibility to higher level jobs is the same. Plus some kids are looking to get out of the City.

I love Gerry and perhaps down the road he might come back one day as the head coach, but right now the program needs a complete re-set and we need to bring in an outsider.

If Hodgson is our first choice, we just cant allow losing him to Providence.

I knew we should have canned JB and hired the Richmond coach in 1991

Possibly we look back at this 10 years from now, and think we should have went with GMac as his career moves forward. And maybe BH leaves after 5 years (which probably means something has been built here)

But the program needs a fresh start, and some outside energy. We can't worry about the other stuff. BH is the answer.

When you have an emotional attachment to someone, naturally you want that person to be "the choice" regardless of the others competing for the same position. Thus, the reason why so many are positioned in the for Gerry corner.

The question that must be asked to be fair is who can lead this basketball program into the future in a positive/winning way without the emotional tie. Hire any of the candidates out the aside from Hopkins and you have your answer.

I'd also argue that some of the anti-Gerry sentiment is driven by emotion as well (he impacts emotions on both sides) Many people are just exhausted with where how the program has been that emotionally we want full and complete turnover.

I'm not on team "Hire Gerry". There are reasons beyond needing a change that I am for BH. But change is part of it.

I'm not sure if this was discussed but who would Jerry bring with him back to Cuse as far as coaches and players.

I know for a fact that if Gmac is the coach then Doty will be on the team. Would be curious to see if he brings Blackwell and AO...basically just another big syracuse family tree hiring. Not sure how to feel about that possibility.

No one is disrespecting him. The issue is he’s getting pushed ahead of others with more experience and facing much better competition only because he’s gmac. If he wasn’t a local hero he wouldn’t be talked about. That’s a fact! I love Gerry but hiring him over someone like hodgson will be a huge mistake. Acc will Be picked apart in just over 4 years with conference realignment. If they pick gmac and he fails there is a very good chance Su is left behind. If that happens stick a fork in major sports here.
Yes this hire is critical. The realignment dominoes will start in about two years and if we continue to fall we’ll be looking at the big east conference along with BC and Yukon

We're getting roughly 45 million for being a bottom dweller. We better pay up for the best coach we can get or someday we'll lose our seat at the big boy table.

If GMAC doesn’t get the Cuse job will he stay at Sienna.

I read this in a board. I find this theory laughable.

Thoughts?

Hear me out. Gerry knows how to be a coach. He has proven his chops at Siena. In two years he has taken them from a 4 win season to a winning season with a team that might make the tourney. He should have been chosen over Red but politics forced him out. As far as I know, he went graciously and left the town that he and his family truly loved.

I know many here think we should get some kind of established coach from a major program. But taking a coach from a mid-major, one who is hungry and has the coaching chops, has proven to be quite successful in college basketball. Or even football. Look at Indiana!

Gerry is an outstanding person who is uniquely qualified to be the head of our faltering program. He inspires loyalty and confidence. He bleeds Orange. He is beloved. And I believe he has what it takes to lead our program back to real gosh-darned good-ness, if not greatness. Let’s go, Orange!

Happy New Year.
G-mac is our best choice. Cuse is no longer a final destination. If a new coach is successful he will be poached. Our history was based on coaching consistency. G-Mac is our only option to return to coaching consistency.
People wishing for a magical new coach are ignoring the reality of our situation.

Your takes are perpetually terrible.

Before we worry about consistency we need to worry about the immediate future. Hiring a guy with a 2-7 record in anything other than Q4 doesn’t scream immediate success.

This opinion is not based on reality of modern D1 basketball or a need for hiring the best coach we can to effectively transition to a modern program.

If our coach is so good they are poached away by a NIL-rich blue blood or SEC mega-fund school, we will be winning at our station in this era.

Reload... Rinse... Repeat.
