Gerry McNamara needs to be the next coach

I wish Gerry had been given the job instead of Red (I understand why Red got the job). I'm sure we would be in a better position right now if Gerry was our HC. No idea what Gerry's ceiling is, but he has a system and identity...

Red is a disaster and because of that, we won't hire anyone with SU connections.

Gerry couldn't recruit at an ACC level.

Agree, but with NIL and an ace assistant as a recruiter that's not a big deal anymore.
Nah, it is. When the money is similar a HC has to be a closer. Most of the guys we get would have been paid similarly by a few programs. Red’s singular strength is getting some of those guys to choose SU. McNamara wasn’t very good at that.

As part of the interview process for the next head coach, a thorough ancestral background check needs to be conducted on every candidate. This is needed to make sure the candidate has 0 ties to Cuse going back 2 to 3 generations. If any candidate that so much as had a 3rd cousin step foot on Cuse's campus at any point in their life that candidate is disqualified.

That's the level of separation the next coach needs to have from the Boeheim era.

Hear me out. Gerry knows how to be a coach. He has proven his chops at Siena. In two years he has taken them from a 4 win season to a winning season with a team that might make the tourney. He should have been chosen over Red but politics forced him out. As far as I know, he went graciously and left the town that he and his family truly loved.

I know many here think we should get some kind of established coach from a major program. But taking a coach from a mid-major, one who is hungry and has the coaching chops, has proven to be quite successful in college basketball. Or even football. Look at Indiana!

Gerry is an outstanding person who is uniquely qualified to be the head of our faltering program. He inspires loyalty and confidence. He bleeds Orange. He is beloved. And I believe he has what it takes to lead our program back to real gosh-darned good-ness, if not greatness. Let’s go, Orange!

Happy New Year.

Highly unlikely he will even be a candidate much less get the job. There's going to be push to go the non alumni route.

We all love Gerry but we need someone that can't spell Boeheim to be the next coach of the Orange. It's time for a fresh perspective. I would love for it to work out for Gerry at some point but hiring him right now would be malpractice imo.
gmac will coach SU one day...but hes young enough now to outlast whomever is the next coach. by then he'll be perfectly seasoned, too.

I don’t care who the coach is at Siena. That coach would need to take another step at say a program like Richmond before getting a Syracuse-type job.

And if we’re ruling out coaches with huge egos, our coaching candidate pool gets very small.

Part of what makes some of these coaches great is that they believe in themselves and have a “my way or the highway” attitude.

Hey Beadle while I have never met you, you have always come across as a kind person on this site but with that in mind I am an equal opportunity “gifer”. To that end, as it related to your suggestion about Gerry, I can only offer up the following:
Mike Myers No GIF

Oh and Happy New Year's to you and your family.

Gerry loves Gerry. He’s not that likable. People like him because he was a good player. But I can’t think of many people who have a bigger ego than him if I’m being honest. Smartest guy in the room just ask him
Also sounds like Pitino, Calapari, Hurley, Coach K, Pearl, Oats.

Not necessarily the worst thing in the room when it comes down to running a big time program.

People really confuse mid-majors from low-majors. Anyone coaching a low major needs to have won multiple conference titles and knocked off some P5 teams OOC to be a legit P5 HC candidate. The MAAC is a one-bid league and GMac is 23-22 in his time there. Let’s pump the brakes.

If he turns into one of them then I’ll quit this board forever, but he’s not. And majority of great athletes are selfish and self centered, but he hasn’t earned that as a coach yet to act that way…

I hear you, but to be a fan of a winner sometimes you have to swallow your soul.

Everyone hated Belichek and Brady, but I respected them for what they were able to accomplish. And, of course, Eli and Big Blue beat them twice, so that tasted good.
