Few cocktails to celebrate the new year??
I'd take Devo over Gerry. He really knows the game. And he isn't afraid to criticize Red in his podcast, and when he calls the games. Really his knowledge of the game is quite impressive.we are soon going to have a thread suggesting Devo as the next coach.
I’m a big fan of the steady climb higher with success along the way. John Beilein was nearly the perfect example - Lemoyne, Canisius, Richmond, WVU, Michigan and eventually the NBAI don’t care who the coach is at Siena. That coach would need to take another step at say a program like Richmond before getting a Syracuse-type job.
And if we’re ruling out coaches with huge egos, our coaching candidate pool gets very small.
Part of what makes some of these coaches great is that they believe in themselves and have a “my way or the highway” attitude.
Feels like you may have a story here? Did anything happen between him and the staff/red at the end?If he turns into one of them then I’ll quit this board forever, but he’s not. And majority of great athletes are selfish and self centered, but he hasn’t earned that as a coach yet to act that way…
First time I have heard this and I am all shook up.Gerry loves Gerry. He’s not that likable. People like him because he was a good player. But I can’t think of many people who have a bigger ego than him if I’m being honest. Smartest guy in the room just ask him
I’d take a young Jim BoeheimDidn't you just describe Jim Boeheim?
No. Just a good, intense talk with someone who is very knowledgeable about basketball and who dared me to put this thread up.Few cocktails to celebrate the new year??

Hey, guys, just because we’re friends it doesn’t mean we can’t disagree. This is a bball forum, after all!I'd take Devo over Gerry. He really knows the game. And he isn't afraid to criticize Red in his podcast, and when he calls the games. Really his knowledge of the game is quite impressive.
Sorry Bball. You may be my best friend on this board, but a solid NO to Gerry.
I've read the same thing about Curt Cignetti. If you can back it up, who cares? That being said, no to Gerry as the next coach.Gerry loves Gerry. He’s not that likable. I represented Patsos’ dad in a prior life. I’ll leave it there with zero contextOther recent Siena coaches who increased the previous years win total by ~10 games;
Jamion Christian (2019)
Jimmy Patsos (2014)
Fran McCaffrey (2006)
So we should give these guys the SU gig too.
Jim was awkwardly so. I tell the story to everyone but at the 96 elite 8, boeheim didn’t even turn to say hi in an elevator to the buses to the arena. Personality of a snail to anyone below him. This is 1 of 100 interactions. I’m sure cto will say otherwise but she’s a booster and important.Didn't you just describe Jim Boeheim?
The BC job is suicide for any coach. No one who has big aspirations should take it.I represented Patsos’ dad in a prior life. I’ll leave it there with zero context
I love Gerry but no. Like I love him enough to not have him get this gig. I’d rather see him take the inevitable BC gig opening in a few months. An energetic leprechaun will
Work in chestnut hill
Definitely. Let's remember Red's second half effort in the 1994 Missouri NCAA game. Even though we came up short, he almost carried us to victory.“Sometimes it’s best if you remember your favorite players for what they did on the court, not holding a clipboard.” red probably this year.
If they were hell bent on an SU guy then they should have listened to JB and made Gerry the coach. Now Gerry has zero chance because SU burnt their mulligan on a coach that most sane people knew would fail spectacularly.Hear me out. Gerry knows how to be a coach. He has proven his chops at Siena. In two years he has taken them from a 4 win season to a winning season with a team that might make the tourney. He should have been chosen over Red but politics forced him out. As far as I know, he went graciously and left the town that he and his family truly loved.
I know many here think we should get some kind of established coach from a major program. But taking a coach from a mid-major, one who is hungry and has the coaching chops, has proven to be quite successful in college basketball. Or even football. Look at Indiana!
Gerry is an outstanding person who is uniquely qualified to be the head of our faltering program. He inspires loyalty and confidence. He bleeds Orange. He is beloved. And I believe he has what it takes to lead our program back to real gosh-darned good-ness, if not greatness. Let’s go, Orange!
Happy New Year.
Agree that Devo is extremely knowledgeable and like that he is willing to criticize this current Cuse team. With that being said the thought of him or Gerry being the next head coach is just sillyI'd take Devo over Gerry. He really knows the game. And he isn't afraid to criticize Red in his podcast, and when he calls the games. Really his knowledge of the game is quite impressive.

I don't want Gerry as the next coach, but it really is shocking how far Siena has fallen as a program. At one point they went to the tournament 5 times in around 10-12 years and were a 9 seed one year. Paul Hewitt, Louis Orr, and Fran McCaffrey were all able to use that job to get to power programs. Jimmy Patsos took over shortly after Fran was there and ran it into the ground.People really confuse mid-majors from low-majors. Anyone coaching a low major needs to have won multiple conference titles and knocked off some P5 teams OOC to be a legit P5 HC candidate. The MAAC is a one-bid league and GMac is 23-22 in his time there. Let’s pump the brakes.
At this point isn't the whole athletic program at SU in grave danger? The football program right now may have more questions than answers. I wonder if a new Chancellor will be interested and/or concerned about the health of the athletic program and what he or she might do about it. Whether Gerry should the next basketball coach may be the least of the problems. If they hire Gmac I’m done with this program and the program will be dead anyway. The program is in grave danger (is there any other kind?) and hiring Gmac is essentially a code red
The new chancellor gets it and the will be a bigger proponent of sports than KS.At this point isn't the whole athletic program at SU in grave danger? Do you know who that is going to be? Maybe I missed the announcement. The new chancellor gets it and the will be a bigger proponent of sports than KS.
