Gerry McNamara needs to be the next coach

Don’t care what was asked, don’t need to listen to form my opinion. Because even if the question was a sledgehammer “Do you think Gerry will get bigger offers this offseason”? - the correct answer would be “I don’t know, I was never in the business of hiring coach because I was too busy being one. But Gerry’s a great coach, I expect he’ll have continued success and will get bigger opportunities - if not this year then soon”.

I realize there is absolutely no way JB would ever take that approach. But that’s why I would be thrilled if he would just stop giving interviews.

I’m confused by this. What exactly is the problem with a retired coach talking freely about where a friend of his might be hired?

You are comparing apples and former Oranges.

GMac was a big part of the slide into obscurity before Red got the gig.

And while he’s having a nice season at Siena, they are a low low low mid major.
Doty is pretty much the team.

BH had success as an assistant w Oates at UB and Bama, and then at 2 different programs now as HC.

And USF is substantially further up the food chain than Siena.

BH has a proven system on O, with metrics amongst the very best across all of D1, P4’s included.
And solid D also.

GMac’s metrics are - meh.

They are in no way comparable.

Once again, with feeling:
If the Siena HC was named Gerry Smith, and had never been involved w Cuse in any manner -
no sane fan would be considering him for the HC gig.
None.

He’s getting ZERO buzz for ANY other P4 opening.

The biggest issue is that Boeheim is still an employee within the AD at Syracuse, which is looking to fill its coaching position. He’s probably pushing Gerry behind the scenes for all we know.

I don't know why people hate Chris Mack and guys like him as candidates.

How about some experienced coaches, in case we don't quickly land Hodgson.

James Jones of Yale - 6 NCAAs in the last 10 years.
Tony Skinn of George Mason has been discussed,

Sean Miller is only in his 1st year at Texas, and hasn't been great. But in an era of no NCAA rules, why not? He certainly can coach.

Mick Cronin has never fit at UCLA, but he's a good coach, wins a lot of games, and his teams play really good defense.

If we are going to spend a ton of money on NIL, then why not pay for a proven coach?

We need to WIN NOW. Find legitimate candidates who can do it.

Lots of stats and metrics being cited, and lots of passion in this thread which is great.
Regardless if GMac may be the stats/metrics underdog, I'm rolling with my gut feeling.
In 1980, one of my greatest experiences as a sports fan was the underdog U.S. Hockey Team.
Against the odds, I had a gut feeling and fully believed in that team from the start, which made their march to the Miracle on Ice an even greater experience. I went hoarse yelling U.S.A.! while fielding derision from the other 5 college students I shared a house with. Felt so great to believe in that team from the start as they stacked W's. Few gave them a chance, then they slowly got behind them as momentum built to the Miracle On Ice.
May not be a "Miracle", but have the same vibe about GMac. Can't shake visions of how the Dome will absolutely rock as much or more than ever with our guy leading the program back to glory. I believe in GMac -that he can do it.
Fire away or give your thumbs-down. No stat/metric/"tree" or other logic can sway my gut feeling. So there it is.
Absolutely NO better way for SU to become great again. Call it crazy talk, but you can't deny it would be spectacular!

Any man in any job has a responsibility to himself, not others, to do that job as long as he wants and is allowed to. If Kent wanted him gone, Kent could have sacked up and fired him and taken whatever heat that would or would not come with. Just provides further evidence Red was a bad coach, but doesn’t really prove GMac is a great coach or currently capable of taking SU’s head coaching job.

I will say he’s clearly a better coach than Red, but that bar is so low almost any D1 HC can clear it.

JB isn’t sharing insider information. He’s the equivalent of the mailroom clerk saying, “Idk, I think Brad would be a cool CEO.”

And this sounds awfully naive. Kent had an agreement to let him leave and save face, and HE REFUSED TO GO.

Years later, after many bad seasons, Boeheim bitched in the press, "I DECIDE when I go, nobody else."

Did you forget that?

He was wiling to ruin his reputation and burn down the program so he could coach his sons, and that's exactly what he did,

Kent was afraid of the negative publicity of firing Boeheim. Kent is a little girl not a leader,

Unless you've suddenly become VERY stupid, you should see that Boeheim is trying to influence the decision using his position in the press.

If nothing else, it's a conflict of interest. As you said, he's not SUPPOSED to have any part in the selection process.
