“He’s a winner”. Metrics free statement, and lots of coaches who are “winners” at lower levels crash and burn at a P4 school. Why is he going to win here? It needs more meat than “he’s always been a winner!” Because the guys who failed were often “always winners”…until they weren’t. Don’t care even a tiny bit about his playing career, stars who become coaches often don’t succeed. Playing success provides no indication coaching success will follow.
“He’s a Syracuse guy”. - Are we supposed to hire the best guy, regardless of his background? Or are we supposed to hire a “Syracuse guy”? I’m confused, the narrative on this keeps shifting. I’m fine with “Syracuse guy” being a cherry on top of a stellar resume. I’m not fine with it being a primary selling feature coupled with a thin resume. Give Gerry five years, the resume could be enough that “Syracuse guy” helps. That is not today though. (Be honest with yourself here - you immediately went to “Syracuse guy” so you think it’s a gigantic selling point, not a cherry on top).
“A lot of Orange fans want him” - smart GMs and AD follow the adage “If you listen to the fans, you’ll soon be sitting with them”. They say that for a reason.
“it would be a disservice to fans to not kick the tires (on Gerry as head coach)”. - Eh. I’ve interviewed people as a courtesy to them when I had no intention of hiring them. I’d be fine with a courtesy interview if that would placate the pro-Gerry crowd. I’m skeptical that’s really going to placate you though.
The case for Gerry right now is all emotional appealing, no data.
