Get Hodgson, Get Melo on Board

Lampkin got more than that after he threatened to leave. And the 247 numbers are garbage. That’s been discussed as nauseom here. Louisville got a a lot better player than we did for around the same amount of money.
Our NIL budget is only $2.5 million. Louisville’s NIL budget for football and basketball is $20 million.

Zero idea why you’re combining football. None of this absolves Red from using a large chunk of his budget to go after a net negative player who’s out of shape and can’t run. There’s quite a few teams with worse situations than us winning games.

They had the top class because they had 12 transfers... If you look at the average rank they are pretty far down the list.

To put this point home a bit, California is 15th in the transfer rankings, are we really going to say they brought in more talent and spent more on transfers than Arkansas? No, its because they brought in 10 guys and it gave them a numbers boost.

Its like when Syracuse football was top 30 class for a bit, it was only because we had by far the largest class in the rankings and it gave us extra points compared to smaller classes even though our average/recruit was well below everyone else Now they are .55th once everyone else started filling their classes.
They still had $7 million to spend.

Because I didn’t know the basketball team’s share. I have since learned it’s $7 million. That’s more than twice our budget.

This is the way but there will likely be equal or more desirable options available. Indiana, Miami, UVa, Nova(?), Oklahoma (?), Mizzou, maybe Maryland, Mich St if Izzo hangs em up, etc
Why would Mizzou have an opening?

Maybe it’s different for basketball, but the football program got accused of not paying people this year so I wouldn’t be surprised if those numbers are inflated. Either way we spent money on Lampkin. And a new coach probably helps NiL. Fran is exhibit #2.

Gates is likely safe but if they fall part the next two months, he may feel the heat after an 0-18 conference season last year.

The facts are the facts. Louisville’s budget is $7 million, which is top ten in all of college basketball.

There's not not buzz... (the shark)
lol. I don’t see Indiana hiring him. An experienced Midwest guy like McCollum seems more likely at Indiana. But we should get McCollum if Hodgson goes to Indiana.

Hodgson is a NE guy I figured if our job is available we would get first look from him. I feel we would be in a spot where he would be ours to lose. We cant drag our feet.

Indiana will go after McCollum. Maryland, Missouri, Oklahoma and MSU won’t be open and others either won’t take a chance on Hodgson or won’t see him as a fit. Syracuse should go after him though.

Agreed.

Kelsey year 1 just showed us what ripping off the band aid and hiring the right coach means.

I hope JW has the leadership and funds to do it...

Go out and get Hodgson and get Melo on board with it. I sure hope the wheels are turning on the DL.

Do the job, John Wildhack.

Red will always be a Cuse legend which is why this really sucks, but he's assembled a group of misfits and he's out of his depth trying to coach them. The offense is poor, the turnover bug returned, and it's clear we whiffed in the portal.

But the greatest concern is we look completely incapable of playing any semblance of defense against better teams and the effort being put forth is very suspect. I believe the term is "mailing it in". That cannot stand. 100% unacceptable.

This can't be run back unless the powers that be are more than ready to accept more of the same (which I fear they may be.) Hope that is an unwarranted fear.

If Red is back it will primarily be because of the financial situation.
SU is on the hook for 20M plus
Red's Buyout
Coaches and staff buyout
New coach and staff cost
In addition he does have a solid class coming in and of course team Melo.
If Red's back it's because of money and Melo.

I think we got pummeled by a guy at NC State with a similar profile last year. That may have been the inspiration for getting a guy like Lampkin. The “in shape” thing… yeah, he’s not a spring colt. But, for the number of minutes he should be playing, I don’t think conditioning or body shape is the problem.

The main thing is… who could we have gotten in his place? I’m too apathetic at this point to do the research into who else was available, interested, and cheaper, but I don’t recall a significant list. He’s not as good as I hoped he would be, but he’s exactly the player I expected. I think I said he would command his space, not block shots, but would still rebound and be somewhat of a defensive paint presence just because of girth. And his offense would be a lot of bumping and flip shots that would often look ugly/sloppy, but would sometimes still be effective.

If we had spent less on a cheaper center, maybe that puts McLeod into more minutes and I don’t know that that would be preferable based on his contribution this year. Then who is the better guard we could have gotten with half of Eddie’s money?

He just beat Florida and also beat Kansas. He’s not going anywhere.

Oh, brother. I actually did not know assistants have contracts with buy out provisions. I guess I just assumed they were just ‘employees’ and their time/tenure was determined by the HC. Still, though, how is that $20M?

They tried to get Leffew for $400k and he wound up getting $600k. Hepburn got $750k. Richmond got around $1 million. Roach got as much as $1.5 million.

So the answer to your question is no one.

They would get minimum $5m bump in revenue if they hire new coach and attendance goes up 3k with that new hire. They also run the risk of attendance dropping even more next year which will increase the loss of revenue from this year

Then we can't do what we need to do to be competitive.

OK.

Not a good situation but maybe we can only fund one program to be competitive and football butters the bread, and has a coach trending up, so...

Also, speaking of money problem, the 19K+ announced attendance below ... It's likely only going to get worse and as for season tix renewals, I would expect a drop in sales:

Which is why we want Melo on board. He will help to increase that budget significantly. Question is: Can we keep Melo on board if Red gets fired?
