GMAC / Blackwell / AO to Siena

Who would win ? Syracuse or Siena

The fact that I can not say that we would win with absolute certainty says it all.
Siena and SU both played Bucknell and Cornell and beat them with similar margins.
SU won 20 games last year, Siena won 4. Both teams are currently 8-9.
SU seems to be trending down and Siena is trending up.
I have watched Siena on ESPN+ and they play with a never give up attitude.
Played 3 overtime games and won them all
Sometimes coaching ability and the ability to inspire others to perform above expectations can trump raw talent.
Red doesn’t seem to have that ability, at least not yet.

The best thing about Doty that Syracuse hasn’t had in a long time is he is pesky and plays with serious heart. Some of the rebounds and steals I’ve seen this kid get are big time, game winning plays

That game they ended up losing by 1 to Iona, he had 3 steals in the last 40 seconds.
If he can just make better decisions offensively, he will be an incredibly good player.
An absolutely relentless rebounder with no fear at all.
No doubt some school with NIL will scoop him up next year.
He was the MAC rookie of the week in early January
He is a 6-5 guard from Fulton.
I wonder if Red even kicked the tires with him.

Huge win for Siena tonight over Mt St Mary's, 82-68 before 4444 fans (pretty ironic). Siena shot an amazing 54% from 3, including 7 straight made threes by Brendan Coyle the first eight minutes of the 2nd half. I've never seen anyone that hot, everyone of them was into the bottom of the net.

Siena is now 4-4 in conference and 9-10 overall. They will be playing at Iona on Saturday if any downstaters want to support Gerry and crew.

Real nice article on Fulton's Gavin Doty. This kid is fun to watch. Doesn't stop hustling and is always in the right position. I said it before, but Siena is going to have a hard time keeping Doty next season.

Sounds like Gerry himself during a certain national championship game.

Gerry said he met him when he came to an SU camp as a freshman and saw what a great all around player he would be one day. Immediately started recruiting him hard as soon as he was named head coach at Siena. Said the kid had all the tools to one day be a league all star. 6-5 guard, incredible hustle and defender, always working to get better.
Incredible will to win, Doty had 3 steals in the last 40 seconds of the Iona game.
I watched that game, SU could use someone like him.
Has been starting 3 games now, one of the youngest players in the country
Makes you wonder why Red didn’t even kick the tires on this kid.

I watched the Siena @ Iona game today instead of the other game that was on at the same time (I haven't watched since the Gtown game). Iona won 72-68. Siena was outmanned with 2 key players hurt plus Brendan Boyle getting hurt late in the game. Iona played 2 5-player hockey lines early and pressed 94 feet the whole game. Even with that Siena put on a valiant effort and came within a 3 pt shot of winning or tying it late. On their last possession down 3 the refs called an unfortunate offensive foul on a moving pick which could have gone either way. Siena started the game down 7 & early in the 2nd half were down by 13. Both times GMac called a timeout and they played much better & even went ahead. Brendan Boyle had 22 & Gavin Doty had 20. And they made 17 of 21 FTs. Unfortunately Major Freeman didn't do much and only had 4 points. His shooting was off.

How did Gerry look on the sidelines compared to red.

Gerry was very animated throughout, as always at Siena. Talking to the players, barking instructions, talking (complaing) to the refs, called quick timeouts.
I am sure I am in the minority, but we promoted the wrong assistant to be head coach. You can see tangible proof of what he is doing at Siena.
And you can see how our shooters, especially Bell, desperately miss him.
I Know they did it because Red had been there longer, and appeared to be a better recruiter.
He was the players friend, hard to make the jump to head coach when you have to make the hard decisions that formally JB made.
JMO.

You’re not in the minority here.

The real mistake was promoting from within at all. National search was the way to go, as has been stated a number of times.

Red was all over the officials today and was talking to his players the entire game. There’s a lot of nonsense being spewed about Red.
A lot more inconvenient truth than nonsense.

Maybe now. But NOBODY on this board endorsed Gerry for coach when it was up for grabs. All I heard was “ What has he ever done to prove he can be a head coach?” Now all of a sudden we made the wrong choice.
Well I didn’t belong to the board then or I would have said something.
Or rather couldn’t get the board to grant me the ability to post because of a verification issue
Ideally, we should have done a national search.
But if we were dead set on hiring one of our assistants I would have picked Gerry.
I would have picked Gerry for the intangibles and ability to teach shooting.
I would have bet he would instill a never surrender work your ass off culture.
Cause that is who he is and that is what he is doing at Siena.
And frankly we need Fran’s DART desperately in the basketball team.

All of a sudden? I think most fans wanted an actual search and not an unqualified internal hire, regardless of which of the two it was.

Not true. Some said it then. I said it on March 6, 2023. (I went back & looked.) But, yes, we were outnumbered. I also believe JB thought GMac would have been the better choice. But that isn't how he had his staff set up. Nor was he expecting it to happen then but it was taken out of his hands.
