As most on this board know i have been critical of Gmac relative to his recruiting. Based on watching the Devo pod cast i reached out to a two friends who are very close to the program to get their take on him. In short both of them are hoping that he is named coach when JB decides to step down. I'm not close to the program and have only had two conversations with Gmac one which wasnt the best. At this point i have to say that i judged the book based on a very limited exposure and i couldnt have been more off base on my take on him. If you have not listened to the Devo pod cast you should. His passion for Basketball and his love of Syracuse is as strong as any i have seen. He is articulate, knowagable and extremely likeable. For my part no more Gmac put downs or jokes. He is a great representative of SU and i would make an excellent head coach. We are fortunate to have him. Between Red, Gmac and Hop we have three excellent coaches who will honor and carry on our tradition of excellence. I truly hope that one of them is named when Jim retires. Go Cuse!

You know what, why not? I'm going to lay my cards on the table.

Red should sue for discrimination of GMAC jumps him for the job.
Based on what?
Because he has more experience?

I have to give you credit for making this post. Forming strong, absolute opinions on things and presenting them as undeniable "facts" is part of the charm(?) of this board.

Whether GMAC will make an excellent HC remains to be seen (you are drifting into that charm faction again by the way). But, he has always been the person you now understand him to be.

Good post

Whomever is selected, you can be sure that a segment of the fan base will be unhappy. So right away, I plan to put that aside and be all-in on whomever JB's (eventual) successor is.

If JB feels that one of his two current assistants is the guy for the job, then who am I to say otherwise? It isn't as though any fan who ever lived knows the minutia of the position better than the guy who is in the hall of fame for doing that job.

I mentioned this in another thread but the average fan is totally clueless when it comes to knowing exactly what is involved in being a head coach at the highest levels. It involves much more than recruiting prowess. It involves an exceptional basketball IQ plus tons of other things that not all otherwise-successful assistants possess. My analogy is the company whose top widget salesman is outstanding at what he does but doesn't really have the aptitude to be the GM, North American President, or CEO. Tons of assistant coaches are the same; they are outstanding assistant coaches but maybe only a few of them have everything else in their repertoire to be successful at a much higher level. Both football and basketball are rife with examples. Of course, that doesn't address the concern about whether such a hoops genius shouldn't prove himself first as a head coach at a lower level before coming back to SU. That is a totally different matter and I understand that viewpoint.

I have always thought the Gerry put downs and jokes were stupid at best and inappropriate at worst. Not peculiar to SU fans alone, things evolved (or devolved) along the way to where fans eat their own players and alums. And for what it's worth, as I have stated elsewhere, I think one of the three (Red, Gerry, Hop) will be the successor to JB and I also think Wildhack already knows which one he wants. The selection can be argued, but that is what I suspect will happen.

I hope we're promoting someone based on experience and not based on how many clicks their podcast received.

I think JAB sees a lit of his younger self in GMAC. only cares about winning and player development

Good post. Being from NEPA, being from a HS that played against GMac in HS and also having some acquaintance second degree connections to the family - Gerry was always good people. My buddies who knew him from hooping a little better always talked about how he was an unbelievable competitor but not a cocky kid at all. Confident sure but not cocky. He is a good dude. He was quiet at times but likable and it's cool to see him come so much out of his shell.

It's a great story for a small town kid from a great family if this happens. He has bled orange since day 1 and that never wavered. The NEPA GMac bandwagon would be full again and likely bump attendance year round if this happened too.

On another note I would be thrilled for Red too and I could see it working there too. Gerry to me is becoming more visible in general and with the steam picking up on recruiting I can see it.

One thing is for sure- you aren't going with anyone who doesn't know what SU hoops means to folks like us with either Gerry or Red.

I don't disagree with comments about GMac's passion for the game and winning, or his likeability. He may make a fine hc. I just wonder that since Red is listed as assistant head coach and seeing his more extensive experience, how could he get passed over. If GMac got the job I would think that if Red didn't leave right away, it would be no more than a year. I think he stays only because JB asks him to, to help the program. I think GMac would stay if Red got the job because of his passion and his attachment to SU. He leaves maybe several years later because he is to close the Red's age to wait.

Gave you a like because I agree, but if JB goes another 3 years there‘s probably a good chance Autry gets a job somewhere else before that.
Unlikely, if his kid is here.

Lots of major corporations skip "the next" if there is a star in the making down the ladder. Pick the best one. That said, I think the optics of GMAC over Red could hurt and could be used against SU in recruiting.
SU could really take that issue away by hiring a black M Lax coach. Could never accuse the administration of not hiring based on race.

Seriously. Do you honestly think that with the excellent history SU has that anyone would be hired or not based on their color race or religion.
SU has an excellent history? The #notagainSU shows there are some issues with our history.

A black coach is the highest paid employee. We let Black QBs play QB before anyone else. We had a black AD. SU has zero issues with race color or religion.

It’s pretty obvious Red is the guy if we keep it in house.
Outside noise can try and make GMac happen but he isn’t the guy.
GMac has had a hard time getting opportunities to be a HC.
He has wanted some jobs and the Interest hasn’t been there from the other side.

Currently Autry's title is associate head coach. Gerry's title is assistant coach.

Scheyer was associate head coach and got the job.

Davis wasn't associate head coach, but UNC also didn't have one. Williams just had assistants.

So...
