Gonzaga to the Big East?

Uh huh.
I'm sorry that it makes you and any other resident of New England go apoplectic at the idea of growth in major collegiate sports in your region. The BigEast is trying to grow their conference to enhance their programs ability to compete, the ACC seems to be stuck in neutral or reverse.

The Big East trying to get Gonzaga was precipitated by Texas and Oklahoma leaving the Big12, The Big12 countered with UH, UC, UCF and BYU. With BYU leaving the WCC, Gonzaga wants to find a bigger profile league for their program. The MWC wants them and is a great fit but the BigEast can't see a fellow Jesuit school and a true national power leaving the fold to enhance a mid major state school conference. If the BigEast can make it work with Gonzaga it will shake up college basketball.

When there is a public announcement, it will be a done deal, like when Texas and Oklahoma bolted for the SEC.

gonzaga to pac12 big 12 or big 10? i could see it maybe...but just think about all those cross coutnry flights for them AND for the other teams in the big east ...doubt they would agree to that.

Stonehill just jumped up to D1...maybe THEY ARE GOING TO THE BIG EAST (CATHOLIC SCHOOL).

You need the coveted Hockomock League covered in the big east.
Wheaton, UMass-Boston, Regis, Fitchburg St., Framingham St., Tufts, and Quincy College (does it even exist anymore) in the mix too

Gonzaga is a bit overrated. They’ve had a great run the past few years. But CBB is cyclical. They’ll have a relative down period just like other name-brand schools have. They’re not immune to it. Few won’t be there forever. The Big East would need to consider this when choosing such an unwieldy expansion to add a school 3,000 miles away from the core members when that school might not even be as relevant in 5 or 10 years. They’d be better off adding Dayton, St Louis or maybe VCU.

They have cache right now. If they were in the BE and had late games against Nova, UCONN, Prov, SH, it would be a ratings bonanza.

How is Gonzaga overrated?

That’s not what I asked for. I asked for a legit link about Gonzaga going to the BE. And legit isn’t some random poster on a random message board.

Dude doesn’t do “links”, or “corroboration”, or that silly “factual” thingy. What would be the fun in that?
Better to continue spouting inept verbal diarrhea, derail numerous threads, and generally confirm the low opinion most have of him. That’s much more fun, no?

With BYU leaving that conference can only go one way. It’s insane they got 2 at large teams. Don’t forget if Gonzaga themselves slip up at all the whole WCC loses prestige and becomes a 1 bid only league.

Fact: The BigEast media deal ends in 2 years. Fact: On numerous occasions over the last 2 years the rumor of Gonzaga to BE has come out. Fact: If the BE wants to add teams to enhance their new media deal, it has to be done now, not when the old deal runs out, to give the new teams time to exit current obligations.

These Gonzaga rumors are crazy but for the umass truthers….if Frank Martin brings Amherst back to 75% of the early 90 excitement would the big east look at them as a rival for UConn at the state college level? Feel like it’s a crazy thought but that to me makes more sense than Spokane

It appears that UMASS and UCONN have settled some age old New England pettiness and now realize that they can have a strong and invigorating rivalry akin to 2 state schools in the same state which will further both schools programs to develop, and now have much more of a working relationship from that understanding. So yes, I think UCONN actually wants UMASS in the BigEast.

The TV contract for the New Big East expires relatively soon. Industry experts says the NBE contract with Fox lost a lot of money for Fox. It is not clear whether Fox will want them back. If so, they might have to take a haircut to stay with that network.

Rights for sports appear to be on the upswing (at least for the giant conferences). Maybe the NBE can find someone willing to match or even improve their old Fox contract.

The New Big East commissioner did recently say the conference is thinking about expansion, specifically to improve its basketball.

They will need a big basketball name. This article says Gonzaga or Kansas or no expansion. I think it is right on the money.

So we know the NBE is looking for a school with great basketball. Does UMass fit the bill?

The answer, as everyone knows, is no. UMass has one of the worse basketball programs in the country.

If you made a list of 50 schools the NBE might consider, I am not sure UMass would be on it. UConn dislikes UMass greatly and are as likely to campaign for them to be added to the NBE as Syracuse and Boston College are to support adding UConn to the ACC.

That said, UConn and UMass are the two worst football programs in the country and both want to play each other every season in hopes of avoiding an 0-12 season. That is one thing these schools do have in common.

That is why they want the Zags, huge west coast fan and interest base. But, if they are going to have 2 divisions they need to add three teams to make the scheduling work. From what I read, it is likely that they will come out with the new conference additions soon. Also when the original BE was formed UCONN wasn't much of a team either and some of the others weren't much better.
