Gottlieb

Knowledgeable fans formulate their own opinions regarding players, teams, leagues and all matters with respect to college hoops. If one is comfortable with their level of knowledge of the game and secure in their beliefs and opinions, they are not bothered in the least by the opinionated drivel of some espn talking head. It's all in the name of entertainment to stir the pot. Afterall, ESPN stands for ENTERTAINMENT and sports programing network.

no, you're right - Bilas has never once been critical of SU.

And Gottlieb's not at all phony.

let me guess - you probably also think that Lebron is clutch, right?

Lebron is clutch

I'd rather listen one Doug Gottlieb than 10 Hubert Davises.

:mad: :blah::blah::blah::blah::blah::blah::blah::blah::blah::blah:

In the regular season.

everyone likes to forget the ECF where he carried Wade while shutting down the MVP of the regular season

also he took the CLEVELAND CAVALIERS to the finals

His performance last year (or lack there of) spoke more to his mental character than anything he did in Cleveland.

Mo Williams was the second best player on the team he took to the finals! He was younger and carried that team! How can you just ignore that? Remember when he scored like 29 out of the last 31 against the heavily favored Pistons? Why does that not matter but last years finals do?

This. I'm a Clevelander also. The guy is a SICK talent who can still get better but he has really struggled mentally in these recent 4th qtr high stakes playoff games.

He's a pretty good analyst (even better on the radio) and he's not afraid to call teams out when they're playing poorly or just suck. When people whine about DG saying mean things guess what? It means we're playing like ****. I remember in 2009 people got on him because he thought Syracuse had final four talent but lacked the executiuon at times to get there. Pretty sure he was spot on there.

I have to LOL at polyannas who think ther's some sort of Gottlieb conspiracy against Syracuse because Boeheim didn't recruit him or some other nonsense. Go to other boards. EVERY fan thinks DG has it out for their team.

If your cup of tea is guys like Dick Vitale who puts like 50 teams in his top 10 and lauds every D1 coach as COY material then good for you.

First of all, nobody likes Vitale, even the guys whose teams he shills for. Gottlieb on the other hand seems to go with the tough love analysis for everybody. Perhaps it doesn't get ratings to give some love. Only ripping teams gets the ratings. I think it comes from the teams fans literally knowing so much more than the announcers. We have a long Doris thread to that effect.

When we get a computer that can do their job, they will be out of work... But you can say that for most jobs.

Can't stand his radio show. Its the only time of day if im in the car i actually listen to music instead of espn radio.

I bet your phone has Pandora as an app. Listen to some tunes instead of getting pissed all day at sports. Most of us are so high strung about our team we don't need to listen to guys bad mouth them. They never have news, their analysis sucks, just pick your music, and enjoy your day.

Largest stage of his career and he choked. That is why it matters. Players like Bird, Jordan, Magic, Kobe, etc .. never ran from the moment or the ball. The Chosen One did.

ok so the times he didn't run from the ball don't matter because we are going to blame him for dishing off to another top 5 player in the league who has been on that team longer

got it

One of the reasons the Jordan or Bird or Magic teams worked is cause nobody else would every call for the ball. They would have to be a huge idiot to do so. Even idiot reporters don't call for second string guys to get the ball more.

Nobody doubts James in his abilities. But his own team doubts his need for the ball. I love watching Bosh call out James.

Lots of teams have three good players. But three good players who want to be superstars, all at the same time. I am ready for a 44 win season for the Heat while they have the same central guys on contract.

The difference is Jordan didn't have anyone as good as Lebron has in Wade. Wade is a legit top 5 player in the entire league. He is one of the 3 best shooting guards in the history of the game. Giving him the ball is not a mistake by Lebron.

What about the time Jordan passed off to Kerr?

Ever hear of Scottie Pippen? Ludicrous.

Wade is one of the top 3 shooting guards in the history? whoooooooooooooa. I think he's gonna need another 4-5 years at his current production level to make a case.. maybe a title or two more as well.

Magic was being called a choker after the 84 finals, I believe.

Lebron was about as good a player as you can be in the ECF, and about as bad as you can be in the finals. It's pretty hard to believe.

I dont think Bron will be passing/deferring in this years finals...

OK, give me an example.

Bilas has repeatedly uttered this season that the 'Cuse's struggles in their half court offense keeps them from being an elite team, still very good, but not elite. I think most objective fans would agree with that comment, whether one wants to label it negative or just reality is one's choice based on one's own thinking.

Gottlieb is a tool! I don't mind when he formulates reasonable opinions about college basketball teams but he absolutely is steadfast in denial of giving SU due credit. He's forced, on occasion, to recognize individual players or specific plays and offer praise through gritted teeth. But last night during ESPN’s Bracketology program, yet another example of Gottlieb’s ignorance, Lunardi used statistics and ratings to demonstrate that SU is and would be "by far" the overall #1 seed if the Orange and UK were both to win-out. Gottlieb was only willing to concede that SU should be a #1 seed, but 3rd overall behind UK and OSU. There's plenty of support for a reasonable argument that UK could edge out Syracuse for the overall #1. But OSU? Not a chance. Gottlieb is an ass, plain and simple. If SU were to beat both OSU and UK en route to a National Championship, Gottlieb would then argue that UNC is the best team in America despite statistics, performance and the analysis of his peers.

SU needs to do something of note in March to get any respect. Get to an elite 8, knock off a good foe. We've been a paper tiger for a while now. Building up great regular seasons and then going out with a whimper...

I think that most here are aware of the difference. Gottlieb is a phony, IMO.

If you like him, good for you.

No, most aren't able to distinguish. And he's a phony? I have no idea if he is or not, but what is the basis for that? A phony how? And aren't we all voting for a phony in november? i mean, it's really not that great a sin to begin with.

He never made it to the finals when Mo was on the team. He took a crappier team there. Every time he has been the favorite he has come up short. He mailed it in against Boston in his last game in Cleveland. The 66 win team with Mo also lost to Orlando. I'm not saying this out of bias--just pointing out that he has no soul and chokes when the going gets tough ;)
