I took a free trial of Apple TV and watched Greyhound starring Tom Hanks. The film is based on the 1955 novel The Good Shepherd by C. S. Forester about a a US Navy destroyer the "Greyhound" escorting a merchant ship convoy in early-1942 during the Battle of the Atlantic at the start of the U.S. entty into World War II. While fictional, this movie is a very accurate portrayal of actual events. There is more action per minute in this movie than any other I have seen, including Saving Private Ryan.

What most do not realize is that the merchant marine lost more per capita than any other service in WW II. Officially, the U.S. lost 1,554 ships in the war, 500 in 1942 alone. Approximately 8,000 to 12,000 Merchant Marine sailors were killed. The National World War Two museum puts the number of dead and presumed dead at 11,324, a loss rate of almost 4 percent. The Marines took losses of almost 3.7 percent with 24,500 killed out of 669,000 people who served throughout the war.

There is no side story or back story just action. If you liked Private Ryan, you will probably like Greyhound.

Tom Hanks' next project is a mini-series about the Eighth Air Force called "Masters of the Air".

Filming now, to be released on Apple TV+ later this year.

certaintly portrayed the stress,

very speilburgian in how it just ends,

the bit about a sub in a close quarters gun battle with two destroyers was a bit much

I saw a clip about the movies accuracy. It mentioned that scene and said there were several reports of that actuality happening. Here is an article.https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/movies/2020/07/10/greyhound-fact-check-does-tom-hanks-world-war-ii-drama-hold-up-to-history/5396073002/

I get one , but adding the second destroyer a bit much

Interesting. Another relatively unknown fact is that US submariners had by far the highest death rate at 20%. I know technically they fall under the Navy as a whole but most know they are in a world of their own.
