Hale: Your Recruiting Success is Already Decided

There probably is some truth in the idea that IN A GIVEN YEAR, there’s only so much a staff can do to improve its recruiting. If you are slotted below BC in the pecking order, 90% of kids who have an offer from you and BC will probably choose BC. But you can change your slot over time by first showing potential and then showing sustained success on the field (or go the opposite way — I’m talking to you, Gerg).

Who are these special recruits who fit our systems, but not others? Other than a pro passer, and some undersized slot receivers (Riley, Nykeim Johnson etc), Dino is recruiting players who fit most systems & who usually have offers from other programs. The trick is to get more of the recruits that other good programs want.

And I think Dino is doing that, with a few more bigger, faster athletes and deeper classes. Step by step.
The special recruits are the kids that are athletic with frames that can go from DEs to Dts. Kids that are raw, havnt played football for too long, Kids that come from small school programs, kids that are an inch or 2 too short for the Alabamas, Kids that dont hit the " camp" scene. These are the gems that Dino seems to excel in identifying and developing. This is his key.

I ventured onto the recruiting board last year to suggest a couple of guys i'd seen in the NYS playoffs and was basically escorted off the board by a mob that insisted that we no longer wanted the "under-the-radar" types. Our recruits have to have certain measurables and they have to be known quantities or we aren't interested in them any more.

Winning will definitely help recruiting. Let’s keep that going.

On another level, Dino and the staff will continue to impact recruiting. I’m not sure how any kid could look at Dino and say they wouldn’t want to play for him.

But the real missing piece is putting lots of kids in the NFL at a high and consistent level. That’s one of the missing pieces, but it also takes the longest to realize because a coach has to be here for longer than 3 years for it to be seen. The elite blue chip recruits want to see a path to the NFL. That’s why so many go to Bama every year, even when they are sitting behind other elite blue chippers for 2 years. When you can claim that 50%+ of your recruiting class gets drafted coming out of college it’s a very powerful recruiting tool. If Dino starts having 5 or 6 guys drafted every year, watch out.

I guess I see it a bit differently with regards to the NFL. I think most 4 or 5 star recruits figure they are going to play in the NFL regardless of where they play in college. I think they want to go where they will enjoy the experience (perks) and have a chance at a championship. That is where the separating line is. What I'm saying is that if you have the most 5 star players, you will also likely have the most draftees. It has less to do with the coach and school as it does the number of very talented teammates. Some players that don't get a chance to play much would likely get that chance to play and shine at a lesser factory like SU, which just might increase their chances. Depending on the situation, you could be better off at SU or another similar school.

We are in good shape because our AD and BOT is willing to be patient. Dino has a top 10 if not top 5 strength and training staff that is 1000% in tune with his strategy.
This is Dinos secret sauce. It enables him to recruit players that can be developed by the S&C team. Its why guys like Kingsley turn into stars. Dino recruits speed, frame two attributes that can be molded.
He doesn't need 5 stars. He creates them. This in combination with a very unique scheme that is made for the Dome is what makes Dino a perfect fit for Syracuse.
An AD who is into the long play
A coach who understands the advantage of our Stadium
A great eye for players who can develop physically
A S&C staff that can mold that raw talent
A scheme that evens the playing field against superior talent.

Bottom line. Dino is one hell of a coach and is the perfect fit for Syracuse.
i'M 85.9999 % WITH YOU but it be nice to get more 4's and sprinkle in a 5 once in a while

I havent read all the posts in this thread, but I hope someone pointed out that the ratings are influenced by where the player commits.

Therefore, if a player commits to a bottom tier school, there is almost no shot that he gets upgraded...and vice versa.

Our recruits have to have certain measurables and they have to be known quantities or we aren't interested in them any more.

1. It's really, really hard for lay people like you and me to identify D1 talent, much less P5 talent. We watch and think "man, that kid is amazing - we should get him" and then the kid signs with Albany. Why?

2. "Certain measurables" is one of the ways our recruiting staff id's these kids. That's why we run camps! Our own staff can't just watch a game and 100% for sure say "that kid is a fit here"...

3. We don't only take "known quantities" - and we have proof of that. We have at least 3 kids on our team that are from Canada, lightly recruited 2* players. Richards is huge and fast. Not known, met the psychical criteria, came to camp and is poised to be a breakout player (IMO). We'll take "under-the-radar" types - but they have to have the physical traits to compete in the ACC.

4. What this staff has done, and I am here for it - is said "we don't care where you come from, you have to be the best fit for what we do, that is willing to sign here"... Under the radar types from NYS playoffs would be seen at camps, evaluated. If they don't fit - they don't fit. It doesn't matter if they are from here or from Arizona. We're done signing kids from here just because they are from here. That makes a nice story - but it doesn't make a great team.
