He better be one hell of a recruiter

Can't we just call it for what it is? This team has underachieved this year because we have coaches who are learning on the job, and A LOT of inexperience on the offensive side of the ball. It's a trade off, and the big bet is that this staff can recruit. Right now, this year, the bet hasn't yet paid. McDonald is trying like heck to find his way--and often flailing. I'm extremely frustrated at his inability to simplify the game plan, etc. For example, I wonder how Cornelius and Funderburk walk onto the field last week and immediately look like our two best receivers--but neither have seen meaningful offensive snaps before then. It just all seems a bit happenstance to me. The whole season just feels erratic, and I find that disconcerting. However, I do feel there is hope. Can this settle down in the next couple of years with SS at the helm? Can McDonald get his sh$% together and develop an identity? I'm a long time season ticket holder and someone who almost never misses as a game. Even so, I find myself more intrigued by how the recruiting class shapes up and how next year goes than I am for the BC game/bowl.

You refuse to acknowledge that Doug was a poor recruiter. I've heard from multiple sources that recruits simply didn't like him. He lacked personality skills that are needed in today's college football environment He flat out turned a lot of people off.

You mean he had a personality that turned just WR's and QB's off, what about the rest of the roster since those positions seem to be the fixation.

Aren't you the same guy that thought we had as much "talent" as Clemson before that game?

By the way, from the sources that I have, which are pretty good, Marrone would be the first person to tell you that he wasn't happy early on with the skilled players that he had been signing. That was changing with kids like Morris, MacFarland, Broyld, Edwards, Allen, and Wilson.

You want to assert that SU failed to bring in top end WR and QB while Marrone was here, you'll get no argument from me.

But how does a poor recruiter fix the overall roster in four years from where it was. You are making a broad claim based on a narrow criteria. Evaluate the overall talent on the roster from start to finish and your claim falls apart.

Did you even look at the pdf I attached? They started with nothing. You don't make that improvement without solid recruitment across the board.

I have no idea who you are, this is probably the first post I've ever read of yours, but don't you dare lecture or question my support of the program.

There isn't a single post I've made where I think he needs to go, and trust me I didn't hold back on Pariani, Robinson, Brian "Arob Killer" White or Twitchy McBubble.

And if you're that easily nauseated, I'd get that checked out.
I just find it funny that you spent four years encouraging me to go away anytime I criticized Marrone, and then you don't take too kindly to it when someone suggests the same after your criticisms of a different coach. That's part of what comes with the territory when you criticize coaches - I was pretty sure you understood that. You had one side of that down pretty good.

Also, what's with the statement "He better be one hell of a recruiter?" If anything, that's the one thing we know about McDonald. It's not a made up track record or resume.

I always enjoy your posts, but you are a way off base on Swinney. He was WR coach at both Bama (under DuBose not Saban) and Clemson, never an OC. And in between he was out of coaching, working a real estate job. Clemson took a huge gamble on him.

Although he was smart enough to fire Rob Spence as soon as he got the job...I guess that makes him smarter than HCDM

He can recruit, but there is a reason why Clemson threw truck loads of money at Chad Morris and Brent Venables. Swinney is not even one of the top five football coaches on his own staff..

I understand what you are saying about Swinney - however, I think his OC is paid as much or more than our HC if I am not mistaken. I think my point is that for the budget that was given Shaffer to pay for staff he couldn't offer a proven OC and/or DC enough money to come here so he could only go after a potential "diamond" like a OCGM as SU is currently unwilling or unable to pay for proven talent on the football side of the equation.

We will most likely never get to a NC in our lifetime unless the "diamond" in the rough actually end up working out from time to time. OCGM will look like a genius if he can actually recruit talented players in the next few years. If not, then the merry go round of coaching will continue here at SU.

Look at the attachment, it explains itself.

The trade of Nassib, Lemon and Sales for Hunt, Broyld, West, Estime, Clark doesn't explain that completely.

Actually it does explain it completely. That was the passing game. It's now a mess because of a lack of talent
