Herm Edwards

Surprised so many posters on here thought he was going to do well. There’s more to being a coach than being able to hold a conversation and conveying enthusiasm.

FWIW, I didn't think the quote was all that bad, it's being played up by the media because they want a story. For everyone talking about how they think Herm will fail on the recruiting trail, TwentyFourSeven ranked their class higher than ours despite them having a coaching change that was panned by the whole media. I think Dino is a great recruiter, so I don't have a hypocrisy problem here, but if you're making fun of Herm and believe in Dino I don't know how you can logically square that circle.

I watched my share of Herm Edwards press conference clips here in KC and his enthusiasm and excitement sometimes gets the best of him. But those comments definitely don't inspire confidence that he had any idea what college coaching entailed.
Speaking of unending and unbridled enthusiasm (not football related), I stumbled upon a story about Robert Herjavec (Shark Tank). His first wife said one of the reasons she wanted a divorce was because he was always upbeat and enthusiastic. Mmm.

He will kick butt there. He is a wealth of knowledge and kids like playing for NFL head coaches. They will see him as their quick way to NFL.

From what I have read, Herman Edwards brought in a great 2018 class - highly ranked in the Pac 12.

I think folks underestimate this guy.
Its selling ASU

lower academic standards
Amazing co-eds
Great school spirit
Great weather

Herm is a great person. Many kids and their parents will like him.

His stated naivety about college recruiting could be a real draw especially for parents. I guess I don't see the negative for kids who crave to not only play in college but have dreams for the pros having an ex-pro coach talking publicly about using much of the same criteria, evaluation for college recruiting that he did in drafting for the NFL. They could believe it's special, an honor to be recruited by Edwards.

10 years ago he might have been an OK hire. I was interested in him when we were slugging through the end of P and Robinson.

They had a pretty good year last year it was them who knocked off an undefeated UW. They knew Todd Graham was a creep when they hired him. One of the dumbest moves I've ever seen.

Now their neighbors to the south is a different story. I think Sumlin is excellent very underrated and the perfect guy to step in and do what Rodriguez was doing better. With Oregon losing their coach and the LA schools losing their 1st round QBs that team might win the PAC.

So, he's publicly stating what's been going on at universities forever - new coach comes in and guys get cut. SU went through with it with Marrone. I remember all of the threads. Not sure what the big deal is other than Herm stating it to the media.

Agreed, pretty much standard operating procedure and I think Dino has done some of this. Don't see any big deal in this and it sounds like it's only a handful of kids. People just love to sensationalize.. I am sure there are kids there who aren't buying in and Herm is saying you can play or not play and sounds like they will still be able to attend school there as well. Not a big deal.

I don't think Herm will be have a ton of success but I don't think he will be horrible either. Again, I would allow my kids to play for him in a heartbeat over a TON of coaches out there

Yes it's not a huge deal other than Herm being so open about it. I wasn't aware of the scholarship rules and how that is handled though - or at least I had forgotten that part. I thought that was interesting.

My concern with Herm isn't recruiting. He'll be fine.

I'd watch old NFL guy who wasn't a great coach to begin with, trying to coach in college. See: Lovie Smith

I agree with your assessment that Herm is “an old NFL guy who wasn’t a great coach to begin with.”

But Lovie Smith went to a Super Bowl in spite of the murderers’ row of Brian Greise, Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton he had at QB.

I know Illinois hasn’t done well since he took over but he’s only had two years to resurrect that dumpster fire Beckman left.

I shouldn’t have lumped them together - but, let’s be real. Herm is no Lovie. If Lovie is a better coach and his NFL experience isn’t helping Illinois?

Lovie is a bump on a log . Herm has the pizzaz! Yes, i know this doesnt win football games but i did catch herm's assistants on espnu, Sirius . Liked what i heard and the OC talked about huddling and focusing on communication . Imagine that in today's CFB. Yes, imagine a world where coordinators are allowed to be seen and/or heard ) . I think Herm will be fine, the P12 is gettable.
