Hey Mel, No Hotel !!!

What’s latest with collegian/old Gennesee Grande? They called off plan to turn that into student housing. But that could be renovated and made into a better hotel.

Any other walkable options? As out of towners, we frequently stay at Sheraton as it’s easier / safer to drink during games vs arranging other options. This will cut into my personal alcohol consumption….

Maybe but convention biz seems like one I would avoid. Should be interesting.
Leave the Convention Biz to the Stone

A New 77,000-Square-Foot Conference Center

Turning Stone’s evolution will double its existing conference space with new indoor and outdoor event spaces that include:

  • Eight new meeting rooms, many with outdoor patios
  • Two new ballrooms, including a 30,000-square-foot Grand Ballroom with a terrace overlooking the Shenendoah Golf Course and The Lodge’s Great Lawn
  • An outdoor courtyard with three new events spaces
  • A new indoor parking garage with 2,000 parking spaces and easy access to the conference center
When complete, these new facilities will make Turning Stone Upstate New York’s largest convention center and one of just three venues of the same size and caliber in the state. Along with its existing facilities and partnerships, the new conference center will expand the resort’s and the region’s marketing reach throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and New England and to new industries while attracting larger and more prestigious organizations and events.

Stay at Hotel Syracuse. It‘s more modern, has better amenities and they usually do shuttles for the big games. Don’t be scared to go off campus guys. Syracuse does not bite.

It seems like everything is turning into student housing up there these days. Is the demand really that strong? Is the student body growing?
Isn't that why the academic ranking keeps dropping?

Admittance has become looser?

Convention center may be the wrong word. A center that could be used for media (especially if we got ncaa games), a place for sports management classes and projects, etc. I guess some real conventions could be held there too.

Another classic shortsighted move by Syracuse. Your only on campus (ish) hotel and the main place for visiting recruits and high level guests/boosters.
They currently do not have enough housing in north campus for all freshmen and sophmores (their stated goal is to have all freshmen and sophmores to live on north campus).

The vast majority of sophomores (the ones who end up being forced to live at Skytop - frehmen are guaranteed north campus housing) do not want to live on south campus. On-campus housing is mandatory for freshmen and sophomores.

There are already two floors of students living in the Sheraton and this move helps them to reach their goal.

They're clearly accepting more students than they have room for. The last time hotels were converted to housing was in 2005 iirc.

But it means that you haven't planned ahead for this. How long ago did the school announce this? New residential housing should have been in the works. As poorly as Ernie Davis was designed, it took two years (if that) from the first shovel in the ground to Summer 2009 when I moved in.

Seems like it’s the exact opposite of short sighted. It’s part of a longer term vision to get more students into on campus housing.

There was never anything special about the Sheraton aside from the location. I stayed there a number of times and it was always a mediocre to crummy experience.

There’s a bajillion hotels within 15 minutes of campus.

There are hotels within 15 minutes of campus, however there aren't many in walking distance. This move takes a decent hotel off of the board. There has to be new residence halls in the pipeline and where are they to be built?

For freshman, living at Skytop isn't ideal, but for upperclassmen, it's the closest thing to being off campus without having to deal without having to deal with landlords and run down houses. Turning all of that land into parking doesn't make sense.

There are not a bajillion full service hotels in the market. Until replaced kiss NCAA tourney good bye .

Confusing and weird. Marshall St was already garbage when I was a student there vs what it was like in the 90s. But I guess if the school doesn’t get a cut of high room rates what are they gonna do?

Everyone I knew that live on south loved it and the privacy of their duplex despite those things being dated.

Why not just give them a facelift? They would the the easiest units imaginable to renovate and modernize there’s nothing wrong with the concept or layout.

Of course the university probably turned a blind eye for another 20 years and now they are no go bad so it’s time to turn them into scrap. Maybe Drumlins can design a decent 3rd 18 hole layout?

Free Drumlins was the best part of SU and the private course was nothing special just in better shape was barely worth taking a cart so you could drive to the second tee and play it. They could probably design a nice layout where south currently is.

People troll me on this but move the corpses and repurpose the cemetery it’s a total waste plenty of other cemeteries with open space.

And you would be wrong.

Covid has wreaked havoc with student enrollment rates and, as a consequence, more students enrolled than were expected to based on historical acceptance rates.

I doubt that hotel got a facelift in the last 30 years either. My mom actually married my stepdad there. Wasn’t that nice then. Just convenient.

Expensive renovation to get up to date or sell to the school?

School already owned it. It definitely is a bit faded and needs a refresh. But it had the proximity factor and they could gouge folks on sports weekends and alumni events (homecoming) parents weekend etc. the hotel must have been a nice profit center but obviously they can make more on housing. I assume they’ll have a dining center in there too given all the infrastructure already exists.

There were major renovations done in 18 or 19, they've put a lot of $$ into it.
