Hey Mel, No Hotel !!!

So where should I stay when I come now. I'm seriously asking.

Here is the definitive list of hotels within a two mile radius of the Dome (excluding the soon-to-be-defunct Sheraton), appearing in order from closest to furthest:

1.) Hotel Skyler Syracuse, Tapestry Collection by Hilton - 0.6 miles
2.) Collegian Hotel & Suites, Trademark Collection by Wyndham - 0.8 miles
3.) The Parkview Hotel - 0.9 miles
4.) Crowne Plaza Syracuse - 1.0 miles
5.) Marriott Syracuse Downtown - 1.2 miles
6.) Best Western Syracuse Downtown (formerly Jefferson Clinton Hotel) - 1.4 miles
7.) Clarion Point Downtown Syracuse - 1.7 miles
8.) Courtyard/Residence Inn Marriott Armory Square - 1.9 miles

If you want to walk to the Dome, either Skylar (which I have not stayed bt gets good reviews) or Parkview. Second choices, although both have bars and restaurants, would be the Crowne or Collegian. If you want to Uber, then any of the Armory Square hotels, which get good reviews. If you don't mind driving and parking then it's a couple by Destiny or Carrier Circle (which would be my last choice). Depending on your vices, don't rule out Turning Stone.

Clarion Point is James Street right? Not really the heart of downtown.

It is James Street and technically downtown (about 4 blocks from the bars/restaurants in Hanover Square). I wouldn't necessarily recommend it, but it's within a 2 mile radius of the Dome, which is all I was posting. It did undergo renovations since it was converted from an Econo Lodge, but I'm assuming you get what you pay for. Cheap spot very close to downtown nightlife if you're on the younger side and not interested in paying $200+/night for a room.

I stayed there once and in the morning the parking lot was full of police looking under the cars for some perp. I'll pass in the future.

I loved living at South Campus. Lived next to two female swimmers who were very popular with the football and basketball players, got to meet a lot of them as a result.

However - kids today seem to view things differently. A friend had a son going to ESF, and I asked if he was going to stay at South Campus - he looked at me like I was nuts. "Why would anyone want to stay there?" I assume there's other options which appeal to kids a lot more now, the appeal of South Campus is mostly gone. Doesn't shock me Syracuse plans to repurpose that area.
That's funny, I lived next to two male swimmers. ESF has their own dorm now on Oakland St just west of campus and Lawrinson Hall. Most Stumpies preferred to live off campus while I was there, especially after year one when many were placed in Sadler Hall. I transferred in, and lived on South with a high school classmate that was also a new transfer, but to SU in his case. Three semesters on South, then we both moved off campus.

It's sandwiched right between the high end Century Club and the very sketchy Snowden Apartments. That being said, the Snowden has new owners that plan on renovating the whole place and hopefully turn it into a desirable place to live.

Used to go there when the bar was called Regatta. They had pizza and wings with blue cheese. Think pitchers were like $5.

What's the nicest hotel near-ish the school now? I honestly am asking.

We did several Friday Regatta happy hours during one of my senior years. Buffet was cheap, beer was cheap, we were poor. It was perfect.

We stayed at Crowne Plaza for Clemson, it's still pretty nice. But request a lower floor and use the stairs, otherwise pack a lunch. Always liked Parkview too. Other than that, stay downtown, it's not a bad walk up to campus.

Best thing about the Sheraton was the view from the window if you were on the Dome side. Otherwise, that place really needed a face lift.

RIP Sheraton, it will be the place where I met Billy Corgan in the lobby on the day of the 1996 football home opener against UNC. And where Joyce would make me drink at 9 am on the days she hosted big parties for either the Spring game or other football games.

at the sheraton after a hundred beers and what was probably a horrible football game i lost my balance and tried to regain it by putting my hand on one of the little single leg drink tables. not surprisingly, it only made matters worse so in desperation i tried another table. this process went on for a while and it started to resemble sting in the Wrapped Around Your Finger video with the candles. before i hit the wet ground, i heard the bouncer say "you" and i joined him and we both said "have to leave"

And where you met Rutgers Al.

you were always guaranteed to meet folks there, like a few years ago, DC randomly at 1:30 a.m. having some drinks with his friends and drunk me insists on taking a selfie. He put me on the phone with his friends. Absolute legend.

Hope the new owners can fix the Snowden. They better have really deep pockets if they are serious about it.

I would not stay at that hotel on James right now. Besides the Snowden, there are other shady elements in the area. I think you have a good chance of getting mugged or assaulted walking around there. Even during the day.

i forgot about those buffets, those were amazing

It’s not the greatest area but I think you’re overblowing it a bit. Per the City of Syracuse crime map, almost all of the reported criminal incidents in that area have occurred at the Snowden. I wouldn’t say you have a “good chance” of being the victim of a crime there, unless perhaps you unwittingly wandered into the Snowden itself.

Well this is less than ideal…

I suspect this is temporary as Syracuse is in the early stages of a growth cycle. More hotels will be built as Micron and other tech firms come here or expand.

Yes, but are there going to be more hotels near campus or out in the suburbs. People who come forgameday like an option of being near campus/Armory Square.

I would hope/think downtown as well considering more people and businesses continue to move there.

It's amazing that Albany has a better hotel situation, but I guess between government and the track, a lot of people stay in Albany. I guess it depends on full service hotels, but last year Albany hosted the first two rounds of the NCAA's and this year, I believe Albany is a pod and is hosting the Women's Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight.

That's years away and the current economic climate (interest rates) are not promoting building nor lending for projects.

Goes back to my earlier point, the university should have been breaking ground on new residence halls when they announced the plans years ago. They've taken hosting the NCAAs off the board for the next few years because they scrambled for student housing.

Unless student housing off campus has improved, what would be the draw to wanting to live under the university's watch in the residence halls? With the exception of freshman, I get it. You need to get them fully integrated into the university socially and being on South is bad for their development.

However, Upperclassmen wanted to move to Marion, Kimmel as well as Watson being that they were at the center of campus and then South because you had more freedom. The only sacrifice was the bus ride and having to go to Goldstein to wash your clothes. Walking up that hill from Lambreth with a surplus duffel bag full of clothes and sheets in the Winter wasn't for the weak.

The building of Micron and expansion of TTM starts next year. There's certain dates that need to be adhered to to receive government subsidies. How do I know this might you ask? Well maybe I've been involved in said discussions working for one of their future suppliers.

My guess rates will come down in the next year or two and you will see a hotel up pretty quickly. This was not a scramble. It's been in the works. Again just because you don't agree with the University it does not mean they don't have a plan. SU wasn't/isn't getting to host any NCAA tournament until at least 2027 anyway as the sites are booked that far in advance.

I wasn't referring to just hotels. What is the plan for new residence halls? You're not using that land on South Campus, so where are you building? This is the overall conversation to be had. Are they going to buy out local homeowners and raze the land for development? There's little free space on Main. You need a minimum of 2000 rooms as between Skyhall and the apartments, those accomodate a minimum of 3000 students.
