Football school? Basketball school? Is Clemson both?

Is your school a football or basketball school? Most institutions fall into one category or the other.

It is difficult to devote resources to two major programs in an equal fashion and therefore, generally either the football program or the men’s basketball program becomes the main beneficiary of the school’s assets.

That being said, it is unusual for a school to have a football team ranked in the AP Top 25 and a basketball team ranked in the AP Top 25 at the same time. Right now, there are seven institutions that can claim this feat. Some of the names on this list will surprise you.

Syracuse

No. 22 in football, No. 16 in basketball

Syracuse recently jumped into the football rankings following a win over then-No. 22 N.C. State this past weekend. With their win over the Wolfpack, the Orange are bowl-eligible for the first time since 2013. The Syracuse basketball team snuck into the NCAA Tournament last year and then made an impressive run to the Sweet 16. Syracuse should be much improved as they return all of their key pieces from a season ago and add some talented newcomers.

We're absolutely 100% a basketball school. And I say this as someone who lives and dies with SU football.

What metric defines this? Attendance? Excitement? Success on the court/field? Money earned? What we're known for?

I kind of agree - just think it's a loose label that no one really ever explains.

As shown in the post I made last night, SU met this criteria 9 out of 15 years between 1987 and 2001.

In 89 the basketball team was ranked 7th and football went to the Peach Bowl, in 97 basketball end up in the NIT and football was ranked 21st and the Fiesta bowl.

As for Nike, SU lax is the flagship program for their lax gear, think Oregon.

Nike is getting out of the lax business. Similar to golf, no more equipment just apparel.

I feel (hope) we'll become the inverse of UF.

A Basketball School that has strong support/success in Football.

The Gators are obviously a Football school, but that doesn't stop them from having an awesome home court advantage, good recruiting classes and some serious success at the Basketball level.

Does that mean we would win back-to-back national titles in football? I think I would be cool with that.

That's a great list! Thanks. So from 87 -01, were we still considered a basketball school, or both?

I also think that probably the largest metric is the institution's commitment or lack thereof to one's program. No doubt during the later stages of the P era, the "only game in town" and "get a life sentiment" spoke volumes in what the commitment was. Had SU been a "football" school, there's no way the power that be at the time would've felt that way and totally drop the ball relative to the program, infrastructure, etc.

Other than some of us diehards here, in today's world, perception of the masses clearly perceives SU as a hoops school.

During that period SU had the 10th best winning percentage in football

Top 10 was FSU, Nebraska, Miami, Marshall, Tennessee, UF, Michigan, A&M, ND, Syracuse.

I believe that only UF and Michigan could match SU's record in basketball over the same period.

Really was a golden age, one of the top dual sport schools in the country.

SU was not considered a "basketball school" back then.

wait

The only schools that I really consider both is Michigan and Michigan State. Maybe Ohio State, Oklahoma, UCLA and Florida as well. I say we used to be both up to the Robinson era. Now we are strictly basketball to no surprise

It's crazy to think Clemson is ranked 2nd in the country in football even though we're a basketball school.

I suppose you’ll lobby for Boeheim to skip retirement and come to Clemson to replace Brownell when he leaves?
I’m just going to tell you...“No!”

I’d argue we were both for a fifteen year stretch from mid 80s to early 2000s. But currently we are a basketball school.
