Hmmm

Pick for what? He doesn't have NFL hands or speed. I think he will be very good for us going forward but that is about it.

Seriously - before focusing on direction why don't we focus on concentration, hands and not avoiding contact.

you must have missed the couple hundred threads throughout the season

Goodness...to recap:

* The offense was terrible this year. Remember life against real BCS teams pre-BC?
* No passing TDs before game seven of the ACC
* The incredible number of false starts, mental errors and What play calls were, you know, a lot

People were bitching and moaning about all this and rightfully so. But very few, IF ANY, were vocalizing "running him off."

Our future is bright. He can recruit. Let's be realistic about how most of this season played out and how mediocre the offense was for a healthy portion of it.

As James Brown said...Can I get an amen??

Everyone needs to lay off McDonald. We are lucky to have him. He is a young coordinator who improved as the season went on without much to work with at WR. Being a pass first OC that could cause some problems. We haven't had a recruiter like him in a long time. Let's enjoy him while we can instead of wanting to run him off.

Suppose I could catch some heat for this, but here goes:

What you say is reasonable, and it's true that McDonald is likely a valuable member of the staff who will put us into a good position as far as attracting talent and winning football games.

That said, he's done some head-scratching things and really represents some of what is bankrupt and wrong about college football and its overlap with higher education.

But I'm beating a dead horse with this one and probably don't have a lot more to contribute to this subject.

Put me in the category of I would love McDonald to be one of the coaches staying. Really liked how things progressed late in the year.

All staffs have growing pains and I think our staff is really special and just what we need.

That said I hope that coaches really don't get too upset with fan opinions. Coaches do what they have to and fans speculate and converse. Oh and by the way these kids that play D1 ball are going to catch warranted and unwarranted flack. I hope these coaches mentor them on how to deal with it.

Hate these posts. Lead to nothing but pointless speculation. Why not just post "I know people" and be done with it? That's what you really want to say.

I understand what you are saying but go easy. Poster is a very good poster that isn't trying to just stir the pot.

Soooooo, who's leaving?

Can't complain about McD. First year OC that showed improvement by the end of the year. People have some high standards!

Wow, so now McDonald is a symbol of the moral bankruptcy of college football? I bet he kicks puppies, too. Anything else you'd like to lay at his doorstep?

That's why we need a payside. That's the proper place for the "my source is better than your source" type of posts.

While McDonald needs to improve, I have no doubt that he will. This reminds me of the Hackett development. Over his head, too young, too inexperienced, too predictable, too passive. Then, when he left, there was a lot of hand-wringing over his loss. I'm pretty sure George McDonald will develop, as well, and he recruits SO much better already.

Niether did Lemon early on , and now he's on an NFL roster. Broyld is a big physical receiver , who should play like Calvin Johnson.

Agreed. The same can be said for virtually every coach or coordinator at every level. As people progress in their career, they accept more responsibility and have to adjust to it. Those that adjust well succeed. The Cool Kid has good credentials and by the end of the season proved that he can work with the tools he has while he awaits the tools he wants to run his high octane offense. That is progress and success. Next season should be better all around: Staff gelling, Kids improving, better recruits - I expect more wins next year.

Really? Quite a ways to go to achieve Calvin Johnson status. I'd settle for just being a productive college receiver first who occasionally finds the end zone. Baby steps

Lemon was undrafted - not a top 5! Broyld doesn't have lemon's hands or even speed. Play like Megatron? Sure, if he grows a few inches and gets faster.

If he doesn't want to play TE he has no place to play in the NFL.

Are you talking about Alec or Jack Lemon? Because the Lemon who played for SU is the 2nd all time leading freshman receiver at SU and was on the All BE rookie team that year. But other than that, your comparison to Calvin Johnson makes a lot of sense.

Agree with everything you've said but couldn't give you a like because of the use of the ridiculous nick name. ;-)

You seem to enjoy berating people , why don't you try building them up.

George should stay at least long enough to develop Ashton Broyld into a top 5 pick. This would show that he can take a top talent that needs direction and make it into something, a recruiter is great, but a mentor to young men is what the top OC's are.

Did you mean Round 5 pick?

You made an over-the-top post and you expect everyone to agree with you. We all like AB but if you are going to say he should/could be a top 5 pick, you stepped on the boundary line.

I have been a consistent supporter/defender of AB but that doesn't mean I should have unrealistic expectations for him. He is a tight end playing receiver and that has its limits at the next level. Happens in college all the time.

I truly believe the Offense will be better next year with a year under the belt for Schafer, McDonald, Lester and Smith. When you completely start with a new coaching staff it takes a little time to get everything worked out; especially when you don't have the personnel that you would necessarily want to run the idea offense that you would want to run. I think after a year of everyone learning the new system and some new personnel that we will be coming in we will be fine. I think we all need to give McDonald a break. How many people could have done a lot better than our offense this year with a new QB, new receivers and losing a 1st round offensive lineman. I for one am really hoping we keep our coaching staff and I am looking forward to next year.
