Hodgson to Providence

Providence is a good gig. They have money. You can win there. Fun environment to play in.

It’s clear that Hodgsen didn’t turn down a Syracuse offer. There wasn’t an offer. Providence AD was under tremendous heat to get a profile coach in this cycle, whereas Cuse has a new AD without that same pressure (but a number of dynamics.)

And while I am not an advocate for HAVING to stay in the family, it was a bit unsettling to hire a guy who is rumored to talk trash to Autry’s kid. I’m one of the more inappropriate people I know, but that is horse****.

His resume isn’t the greatest? He’s been a coach for 3 years and won regular season conference titles 2x, won a conference tournament 1x, and gone to the tournament 1x.

You’re blind with bias.
What’s your prediction for how BH will do in his first 3 years at PC? NCAA Tourney in Year 1? If not, what about Year 2 or Year 3? Will he win a regular season Big East crown or a Big East Tournament in his first 3 years? What about in 5 years?

I’m genuinely curious to know how folks think he’ll do, especially since it appears that he has the NIL $ that he wants now…

How many first round games did he win? His resume is mediocre at best.

You can win in the Big East. They are a top five NIL school and have produced more NBA draft picks the past couple years than we have.

They will be dancing in year two for sure. Maybe even next year if they can keep Jones and Vaks (Who announced he’s planning to enter the portal) and recruit in.

During the post game handshake line, Hodgson reportedly told GW player Trey Autry that his father, Syracuse HC Red Autry, wouldn’t be the coach at Cuse next year.
Kind of an a-hole thing to do. He shouldn't have been speaking on Syracuse, and especially, the kid's family at all. Just say "good game" and keep it moving.

They won't win the big east as long as Hurley and slick Rick are there. I also expect Shaka to bounce back at marq.

Relative success in the Big East in infinitely easier than in the ACC. He will have to compete with 2, maybe 3 programs, versus 8 or 9.
Add to that a new Chancellor and AD at Syracuse, and the fact that he would have to compete with Football, and the perception of potential interference from the Boeheim faction...
Still think 'Cuse should hire Bobby Hurley, but I may be the only one. GMac is not ready for prime time, sorry.

I'll take a shot at answering.

USF's advanced metrics were very darn impressive this year. And we see an example of this exact system working well in the SEC, at Alabama.

So I am fairly certain that Hodgson's systems on both side of the ball will translate to the BE level. This year at USF, he brought in several guys, including several from lower conferences, and they still excelled. So his roster probably won't be optimized in year 1, but I think that PC's quality of performance will improve in year 1.

As for winning the Big East, that depends on Pitino. He isn't going to be there forever. But right now, he's the top dog [even over UConn], and St. John's is the best program right now, and has been the past two years. Hodgson will have his work cut out for him to overtake Pitino or Hurley, but I wouldn't be surprised if Pitino isn't coaching in 3 years, let alone 5.

I would expect Hodgson to have them back in the NCAAT by year 2. My expectation is that he'll be in the top 3 of the BE quickly and consistently.

Longterm sure. If he plans on being there a decade it is a much better job than USF.

One can make the argument that PC is the 2nd worst job in the Big East. What you said about them can be said about just about every other Big East team.

Also are we ignoring that Cooley left?
From what I heard cooleys departure was not all from his side. A lot of rumors but his team basically folded in the big east tournament that year also if I remember correct.

It's always hard to say. Hodgson has Nelson get hurt and he's likely looking at an subpar season and zero legit schools are hot on his tail. Basketball is weird like that.

Kim English was trying to learn on the fly, and Barnes got him hooked up there. If Bryce Hopkins doesn't get hurt, and then sorta "sits out" his next year to get healthy, Kim English may have made a tourney and may still be coaching. Who knows. He had a pretty injury plagued tenure and Vaaks was great as a Frosh, but was always there for his next NIL payday so wasn't much of a "team player."

Sooooo, Hodgson should be able to get people to play there with the NIL. He should be fine and PC should be in the mix with Villanova, etc...for the third spot within a year, two at most. They just won't have the depth for injuries - like a UConn.

They got money though.

I'm still glad we didn't get him though - Oates and the Oates tree is not one I would want to be picking from. Slimeballs. lol

Scary if you think providence is a better job than syracuse. Providence is a total dead end job i dont care how much money they throw at him
You have to ask the question...if your leading contender for the coaching position(Based on media reports- may not even be true), selects Providence, then, is your job as highly regarded...as Cuse fans think it is?

I don’t believe he got an offer from Syracuse. I turned the Syracuse job down too.

ACC basketball is down, but the league still is definitely better than the BE. So any coach who prefers to take the Providence job over Syracuse is a coach that I as AD our fan would not want. That guy's choice must be significantly about preferring an easier oath to winning the league.

I am not suggesting that Hidgso turned down Syracuse. My guess is that while talks were held that Cuse did not make an offer.
