After taking off to an early 3-0 lead, the Orange allowed four consecutive goals. The scene: A TD Ierlan face-off win and opponent goal in transition is something Syracuse has seen dating back to Ierlan’s days at Albany. On Sunday, Syracuse stopped the run shorter than it has in the past.
Junior face-off specialist Jakob Phaup beat Ierlan on a few clamps and played physical on 50-50 groundballs. Phaup, a former high school wrestler, often forces groundball scrums and takes face-offs when senior Danny Varello, considered by coaches to have quicker hands, isn’t winning the draws clean. Ierlan finished 10 of 20 at the X, while Phaup won 11 of 18 and Varello 4 of 11.
“It helps (to stop the runs) if we could win some face-offs, which Phaup did and our wings did,” Syracuse head coach John Desko said. “But they're going to get those runs especially with (Ierlan) facing off like he does.”
After an early turnover ended Syracuse’s prior man-up, Chase Scanlan absorbed a big hit on the crease, which earned Syracuse a man advantage for two minutes. During the two-minute non-releasable penalty, the Bulldogs defense pressed out and Syracuse scored three goals.
Two came from sophomore attack Griffin Cook, who led Syracuse with three goals. Twice on the man-up Cook moved around an open crease area, caught a pass near the cage and finished quickly with a goal. The other Syracuse goal also came near the net as Stephen Rehfuss flung a pass across the crease to a leaping Scanlan for a quick-release goal.
“If they’re going to press out, let them press out and make them pay for it,” Scanlan said.
Scanlan (2G, 3A) finished tied with Cook for the Syracuse lead in points with five. Meanwhile Syracuse’s first line midfield — Jamie Trimboli, Brendan Curry and Tucker Dordevic — combined for one goal and one assist. Though a Dordevic dodge midway through the game, might’ve been the highlight of the scrimmage.
