It may be Groundhogs Day, but in the Ensley Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon, two teams with preseason top-10 rankings and Memorial Day aspirations battled in a closed scrimmage that had a late spring feel.
No. 8 Syracuse defeated No. 3 Yale 18-14 behind a strong performance from the Orange attack unit. The teams reset scores at the end of each quarter, but the two teams played mostly starters through three quarters in a tightly contested matchup.
Griffin Cook led the scoring with a hat trick and three assists, while Chase Scanlan also registered five points (2-3) and Stephen Rehfuss (2-1) chipped in three more as the starting attack combined for 13 points in three quarters of action. Owen Seebold came off the bench to score twice and add two assists as well.
Additionally, Jacob Buttermore (2-0), Andrew Kim (1-0), Brenan Curry (1-0), Jamie Trimboli (0-1), Peter Dearth (1-0), Andrew Helmer (1-0), Mikey Berkman (1-0) and Matt Magnan (1-0) also got into the scoring mix.
One of the more impressive numbers on the day was the 'Cuse faceoff unit combining to go 17-of-36 against TD Ierlan and company. Ierlan, one of the best faceoff men in NCAA history, managed to win only 50-percent of his restarts, while Jakob Phaup was SU's best on the day, going 11-of-18.
