Honeymoon Over

My honeymoon with him is 5 years.

Pretty much the same way with me. I think we have to give him that unless a total disaster happens. Otherwise, we'll be looking at least at that time frame by starting all over again. I do want to see at least 6 wins next year or I'll be disappointed.

Y'all sleeping on TDs athletism

as long as the kid can sling it and throw the ball in tight spaces, I really don't care how he runs around. I really don't. I don't want to see him running around too much anyway

Thanks.. truly hoping he can as I will carry you out of the dome on my shoulders every Saturday afternoon as long as we win. I am just so sick of losing

this is a running joke for 10 years between us as we watched SU keep trying everything but a normal college offense while watching timmy chang throw for 600,000 yards and a bald guy with a gut go beserk at Bowling Green with babers.

I would actually prefer a hybrid of the two, would be perfect

You are a friendly foe here, however, you know deep down, if you're being 100% transparent, you have to be wondering how did we ever lose to that team. After VT last year, Dabo certainly 'had to know.' ;):)
Sure I do but I also know that Dino is a great coach. He knew that our QB1 was not well so he brought relentless pressure. He also knew that our defensive coordinator likes for the offense to show their play call before deciding on what to run. By snapping the ball at a breakneck pace it neutralized our effectiveness. Just a perfect storm. We were dominated in every facet.

Cuse has the potential to be like Oregon was under Chip Kelly. Dino just needs more time to get the pieces in place.

Agree!

I would place alot of money on Pitt/FSU Sept 14th (Friday night) and a bye week on the 22nd. That's just how it is.

As for peiple wanting Dino gone... LOLOLOLOLOLOL. Get a grip.

Dungey is a top 10 qb in America. The drop off after him is immense. He is our heart and soul. How has Green Bay done since Rodgers got hurt... or more to the point, how did FSU do when their qb went down (And they have a slew of 4 and 5 star back up qbs)??
ED is not a Top 10 QB in America.

You're kind...or you just like getting "likes" here. :) We'll see. Interesting that you feel Dino already is a great coach vs. potentially being one, since objectively/factually, his record here so far is 8-16. I was apprised Hue Jackson was a great hire/coach too, also with a similar short/sample size track record. He's currently a 1-26 coach of my beloved Browns...in all his greatness.

Haha. I feel he is great. He took a roster that is probably the bottom of the conference (no offense) and beat VT last year and Clemson this year. Both of those teams won their divisions. Is he consistent...no but it's still early. Ball bounces differently in a few games and you guys are preparing for a bowl game. It's hard to win at a place with no real recruiting territory in the toughest division in college. I'm not sure if he ever wins 9+ games a year but to me that doesn't mean he isn't a great coach. Dave Clawson won 7 games at Wake this year and he is absolutely a great coach.

I'll put it this way. If Dabo left Clemson he would be number 2 on my board behind Venables.

For me at least. 1 million excuses for being outscored 160 to 67 against 3 mediocre opponents the last 3 week's. I have to see a bowl next year or I'm off the Babers wagon.

I'm with Dash...a rebuild in the ACC Coastal is a lot harder than a rebuild in the Big East.

Assuming FSU beats Louisiana-Monroe, every one but SU will be bowl-eligible in the Coastal.

We need to upgrade both talent and depth of talent.

And we need to tone down the schedule. This year's SOS was 10th.

He needs minimum 5 years.

Hard to be consistent when your talent level means you have to bring your A game every week just to compete...that is really hard to do.

And even harder when you have to play one of the toughest schedules in the country.

Beat Clemson and took NC State, Miami and LSU down to wire on the road. Are you kidding me?

I'm with you. I think he is a keeper.

Dino will get at least 4 years.

If he doesn’t make a Bowl next year questions about him being the guy or not are legit. One of the better qualities of Marrone was his willingness to make changes. Can Babers adjust his systems if he has a losing season in year 3? That is a concern.

Babers has to go bowling next year just to match Shafers win total...

With that said, I'm in the boat of we can't keep changing coaches. Turnover is bad. Especially for a school like Cuse. Shafer deserved more time, as do most coaches. Unfortunately that's not how this business works.

Pretty much the way I see it.

When people say “five years,” are you saying five years to earn a bowl bid? Or five years to put the program on stable ground?

I’m not sure the fan base will tolerate two more years without a bowl. Duke managed a bowl again this year. FSU is rallying for a bowl. BC is going to back to back bowls. Wake is in a bowl. Our schedule was brutal, but we need to find a way to get back to a bowl pretty soon. We can’t stub our toe against Western Michigan to start next year.

As mentioned, can Babers make the adjustments defensively? Can he recruit a productive tailback? I was a bit concerned when he was surprised how quickly ACC coaches were able to make in-game and in-season adjustments. Is Babers finding this more difficult than he imagined?

Sure, we had injuries this year. A few key ones, including Dungey. But not a rash of injuries. We could face a year with far more injuries than this year. So, yes, we need to develop depth and keep recruiting at a relatively high level. It’s going to be hard for Babers to keep pitching Orangeisthenewfast unless he can get over bowless seasons.

Word.

It isn't panic time yet. But another 4-8 season next year... I may be at the typing random potential coach names into google stage.

We're not going 4-8 next year.

He didn't deserve more time. But the issue I'm seeing is that people are mentioning injuries as an excuse to how our season finished... Shafer had to deal with tons of injuries in his time here. Especially at the most important position... qb.

Since people can't tell the difference:

When we're healthy under Babers, we compete.

Under Shafer, we rarely competed regardless of health.

That's it. That's the difference.

Agree

But in the end wins and losses are what matters.

ED is not a Top 10 QB in America.
If you put Dungey on a Big12 team where the defenses are scat, he would have 4000 yards passing and 1000 rushing. He has no time to make reads and his receivers are tightly covered. He only runs because it's that or take a sack.

Are you implying that that objective finding is greater than the subjective "blind faith" and how '2018 will be something remembered around here for a very, very long time' gospel? ;):)

The honeymoon was bound to end for a lot of folks this year due to our ridiculously difficult schedule. I thought we had a very narrow path to a bowl, and it necessitated starting 3-0, splitting NC State/Pitt, and beating both Wake and BC. Needless to say we couldn't walk that tightrope.

Finishing the year on a 5 game losing streak was terribly disappointing, but not exactly unprecedented. It was just back in 2011 when SU was 5-2 and coming off a big prime time win against WVU, and then we proceeded to drop the last five. We followed that up with a very solid 2012 season and I think 2017 --> 2018 can yield a similar story.

The 2018 is much more manageable: we should be able to go at least 3-1 OOC and get UNC at home as our Coastal game. That means needing to find 2 more wins to get bowl eligible, and with NC State/Louisville at home, and Wake/BC/Pitt on the road, our path is not nearly as perilous as it was this season.

I think there are two critical things for the offseason: (1) build depth defensively and figure out how to force turnovers, (2) find an offensive skill position difference maker not named Dungey and figure out how to convert in the red zone.

To me the two most disappointing stats this year were related to those two needs:

(A) Our points per game (76th) was ranked ludicrously far behind our yards per game (23rd). In fact, only one team among the 130 in FBS had a bigger differential between YPG and PPG... UConn (45th in YPG, 102nd in PPG). That's horrendous efficiency and our inability to convert in the red zone was crippling.

(B) We ranked 113th for turnovers gained. 113th. We are not nearly good enough to overcome creating so few turnovers.

I'm still fully on board Team Dino. I truly believe that if he can't be successful here then we may all need to accept that we'll never return to the status we held in the 90s. I do think next year is a crucial one, and that it's a very bad sign if we don't win at least 6.

I'm optimistic though. Dino has a track record of being thoughtful and I expect him to take a hard look at what transpired this season and make many meaningful changes.

Good post.

I’d Re-up him based on confidence that “Dino being thoughtful” is 10000% better than most here (and other places too).

Bingo!
