Houston Postgame

I guess JJ is ok at the end of the game because nobody on the team can shoot free throws. Anthony is not ready for prime time, he needs to get stronger and quit jacking 3's.
What a fun game to watch.
What could have been...
Hard to believe Kyle and Anthony were both 4-9 from the foul line.

I know that we have no right to be disappointed. If you had told any of us we’d lose by 4 to Houston without Donnie, we’d be shocked and take it.
-But it hurts because the game was there to be won. George had to get into the last play of regulation 4 seconds earlier. But hard to be upset with George. Against that tenacious defense, playing with guys he’s not used to yet, without our best scorer, he played a really nice game. And took care of the ball in a way we haven’t seen a point guard do in a while, although a couple of his turnovers were avoidable. But he is a guy who you can win with.
-in a game full of garbage calls the worst one was when George was called when the Houston player clearly traveled late in the game.
-We have something with Kyle. He played his ass off and showed a ton of heart, not to mention some clutch dunks.
-Betsey apparently has the clutch gene, which is nice to know.
-it goes without saying that the free throws killed us. It was contagious. If we shoot 70% we win the game. Anthony really needs to figure it out because he will get to the line. He also gave up a couple of easy ones on defense. But I like the poise he shows as a freshman.
-speaking of free throw problems, JJ is really scary right now. And it won’t be remembered, but his one on 5 chuck late in the game was absurd.
-it felt good to be fired up again. When Kingz made that and one it felt like the old days. The Betsey three was so exciting. It’s not like last year where our guys are unathletic and out of shape. Our guys gave it everything and if we play defense with that effort and intensity the rest of the season, we will be in every game.
Defense will win a lot of games and if they can shoot about 65% at the free throw line things will be good most of the time.
We have players who can draw fouls, and as the season goes on they will get a lot of teams in foul trouble.

William Kyle and Nate Kingz are studs. Complete basketball players.

Nate Kingz will be one of my major highlights of the game down the stretch when he was on Sharp, Sharp couldn't even touch the ball, let alone score. When Sharp scored his quick 5 points it wasn't on Kingz. Kingz is an outstanding defender best wing defender I can remember at Syracuse in a long time. Watching him off the ball he is always in perfect position as well. Just an amazing player that pays attention to detail on every possession.

A question for anyone knowledgeable on Net Rankings. Does taking the #3 team to overtime on a neutral court help our ranking in any way or is it a nice nothing?

Lots of thoughts will post some stuff later good and bad on this game. There are no moral victories when it comes to the bubble and making the tournament. Kids played hard and I appreciate that. Regardless of the schedule I am now sold we have the talent to make the tournament.
Don't agree, when that team is 28-2 and we've taken them to OT, it will definitely matter (maybe I'm wrong)

I have to believe we’re simply neglecting that aspect of the game in practice and not simulating the sequence of in game FTs enough.
shoot ft's in practice all day . does nothing really. it's like practicing a fire drill . everybody knows it's a drill and everything goes smooth as silk. now add real big hot flames and watch the difference.

Agree 100%. Hopefully his 3-point shooting improves. I liked his drives to the hoop.

We are salty as hell. We may be a little ways away but we just went 45 minutes against the #3 team in America on a neutral without one of our best players.
current rankings will change a lot by the end of the year

if I was a houston fan, I;d be more than a little concerned with that performance

There are definitely moral victories for a program in our position. People don’t want to face reality and still have the mindset it’s 2003 or 1987. We haven’t been that in a long time but this was a small step back towards that
Moral victories aren't even what this was. it's far beyond that imo.

When's the last time you saw Houston players tired and crying for fouls to the refs late in games or needing help down the stretch of games to put them on the line or worse the "inconclusive" challenge. We had their whole squad including Sampson running scared.

And just as an FYI just because Sampson yells the loudest at his players more it doesn't mean he's coaching. After Sampson screamed at his squad late we rallied back to make it to OT while Autry was just quiet on the sideline.

It didn't go our way, but it's something to build on. There are just no weak links on this team and our best player is out.

Only saw the 2nd half & couldn't really focus bc it was family game night.. saw a stretch where George committed too many turnovers & we went 4 minutes without scoring.. some horrific calls. 2 Houston travels not called, & that tip out of bounds that was 'inconclusive' but seemed quite clear. And 100% you have to get a shot off.

Hope we can win against Kansas bc we should have won tonight.

Light years better than the last 4 years of Syracuse basketball, thats for sure.

I’m pissed we lost I feel like we should of had a better play at the end of regulation but I’m just being bitter right now
Needed to go sooner. I don't understand the paranoia of potentially leaving a few seconds on the clock. If they get a defensive rebound and score in 4secs or whatever so be it. It's not the NBA.

George decided that what he was doing. You can tell Red wanted to attack the rim. Players make decisions they think are good at that moment. Did Samson forget how to coach when he let SU score the last 11 points in regulation.
George had a rough last few minutes. The foul was idiotic and the jumper was dumb.

This game should break the seal on this team seeing what it takes and what they are capable of. Win the next two and Houston becomes a loss to chase a bigger win down the road. That is the key though to win the next two. Then bring that same energy to a loud dome against Tenn.

That is what I mean by moral victories; it doesn't mean anything if we don't play the same versus Kansas and win that game. The way we played I expect us to beat Kansas now not just hang in with a chance to win I expect to win the game. If we don't, then this game means nothing.
Fair take, but keep in mind Kansas played a cupcake today and we played the top team in the country in overtime. Plus we play 4 hours earlier tomorrow than they played. You may say it's defeatist but I'm just stating the facts about the competition and game times.

He got the shot off.

He also got HACKED on the arm, and then it got blocked.

He shoulda been shooting 2.

Also - that challenge call was BS.
They showed one angle where the ball CLEARLY went off the Coug players fingers.

Anyway - awesome effort.
They battled the whole way.

All without our top scorer.
He would have missed them both
