Let's be realistic in this thread and try not to be mean...

- Bell goes off early and often, opens up room for JJ and Lampkin to maneuver
- Freeman and Moore play a bunch of mins and play complete games
- Red figured out some defensive scheme to hide our deficiencies
- McLeod steals 5-10 mins and blocks a couple of shots and grabs some rebounds

Anything else?

Big question is who fills the void by the lack of strong pg play on both ends? If we can find a way that Carlos plays 15-20 mins or less, we don’t turn it over much and the rest of what you said then I think we can do it.

UT looks like they aren't dead eye at the FT line. So that's good that they likely won't be like 25 of 27 from the FT line to pull away.

This UT team is really efficient on offense, driven by Tre Johnson, who is a center of gravity. Maybe we have a terrible defense, but can we sell out to stop one guy? BTW, he scares the ever living daylights out of me because he has high usage and high efficiency.

We cannot waste our time with Carlos. We can't give away those possessions to start the game.

Overall, this has to be the turn for the team to find out 1) who is in the rotation 2) who can functionally help take away one source of offense on an opposing team and 3) have someone who has so far been disappointing/so so, to step up.

My biggest fear is the efficiency of UT. It gives us no leeway to give away possessions. Zero. Crush that and let's see how are guys look when they get hit in the mouth by a legit team. Maybe it wakes them up.

I want Eddie, Donnie, Choppa and JJ to be the guys. The rest of the rotation, whatever. If we get something from Lucas (maybe he's the Tre Johnson defender), awesome. I'd try it. If Jyare can be a microwave for 7 minutes, great. Sorry Chris Bell, I'm hoping, but I ain't banking on you. If you have your flame thrower game in ya, it better come out. But we can't deploy the offense to calibrate towards hoping that happens, again, because we won't have the possessions to give away.

Hope JJ can handle the ball...mix in Taylor and Moore. Carlos can play his 10-15.

I'm already over hoping for strong defense at the guard position, that's why I said some scheme. Either zone or something to mix it up.

As far as offense...It has basically been run through Eddie anyway.

Yes we can. Will we? Not super likely IMO although I haven't watched Texas at all, just looked at their results.

I was at the game Saturday.

-Its hard to describe how poor the defense was. Forget about scheme, for a D1 school our ability to deter what they wanted to do was embarrassingly nonexistent 90% of the time. We simply did not make it difficult for them. Even in the 1st OT with an 8 point lead we allowed them to take the threes they needed to get back into the game and fouled them to put them on the line.

-The other big worry I have is playing hard consistently. This team only seems to be competitive in stretches or when their backs are against the wall. Moore might be the one guy who competes 100% of the time.

-I feel the offense has enough talent to get bye even with the poor PG play. Some adjustments, getting used to playing together, plus better shooting and this very well could be a good offensive team.

-Honestly pretty worried about the prospects for the season until we see:
consistent competitive effort
personal accountability on defense
an actual defensive scheme/identity
evidence of defensive scouting by coaches and players

EDIT: as to how, shoot lights out and make progress on defense

Yeah, I'm not sure where Jyare fits right now. Feel like we have to force Freeman mins to get better. Davis can't play backup center...it wont work

I think Freeman is our back up 5, didn't he get run there last game?

I am just assuming McCloud is done as it pertains to the rotation.

Unconscious shooting. We need Bell to hit 6 or 7 threes, and at least 2 other guys to make 3 or 4.

Even if this squad plays defense so far over their heads that their noses bleed for a week, we're still going to have to outscore Texas to win.

Starling, Freeman, and Lampkin need to get close to their same stats from last game only in regulation. Bell has to participate with at least 20 points (6-7 3's) and Davis chips in with 15 scoring inside to open up the outside for the guys who can shoot 3's.

Then we have a chance to outscore them.

Texas's biggest player is Shedrick, who is listed at 6'11" 231lb, which means he's going to have a 50lb disadvantage to Lampkin. Art Kaluma is a higher rated Davis. Shedrick's two backups are shorter and/or lighter. Nobody is going to be able to compete with Lampkin.

Texas is guard oriented, and our interior might be able to overpower their advantage on the perimeter.

Also, since three small guards all play about 25 minutes, there's a good chance Bell can just shoot over whichever guy they try to guard him with.

I expect Bell will have a good game and might be enough to keep us in the game.

Starling seemed to come alive and decide to be the alpha scorer against Youngstown. Between him, Lampkin and Bell, we might be able to keep pace with Texas and wear their big guys down or inflict them with foul trouble.

Will Lampkin be able to keep up with him? Dude played well but playing against Texas is a little bit different, I'm sure his fatigue will play more into this game than the others.

Shedrick played at UVA. The one thing I remember about him is he was extremely athletic.

I think we can win if we score 85-90. There’s no way we are stopping them. Their best player Is a guard who was a top 10 recruit. He will get his 25 easily.

I think we need the 4 main guys to combine for about 80 points.

Sure, sure.

Somebody specifically asked us to find the path to victory.

It's easier to find the flaws than the bright side right now.

My bad.

Staying on topic, I think we can win if the defense plays well and we shoot the lights out. Give me a win and I'll ignore the first three games.
I also should have mentioned this thought... This team might be the personality to play down, or up, to it's competition.

Red certainly coached like the first few games were exhibitions until we got down. Weird rotations, almost everybody getting equal minutes, no coaching intensity or even game plan tailored to our opponent.

The whole team, including the coaching staff, might come out with a higher level of intensity against a better team that they aren't expected to beat.

Shoot 75% at minimum from the line, single digit turnovers (and none going straight the other way).

No 3 point attempts from Davis, which is basically a turnover.

Eventually Bell will run into some shots.
