How does Bell go from 40% to less than 25%

He's not a great shooter. Yes he had a great shooting season last year but I strongly feel that was quite the exception rather than the standard. He struggles mightily to create his own shot. He just has to camp around the arc and wait for someone to set him up. I think the real Chris Bell is a decent shooter with big time confidence issues when the ball isn't going in.

Confidence is important, especially the further out you go. And it has been said that he is somewhat ‘fragile’ in the head. If you’re a shooter without the ‘shooter’s conscience,’ you’re kinda screwed when things turn downhill.

This was half of my issue when playing basketball. My misses affected me far more than they affected other people. And the more you think, the worse the results. Same with my throws to first from shortstop.…Yips are real.

My whole life has been golf. He has the yips. I sat first row behind basket today and watched them warm up for half hour. It’s not coming off his hand the right way at all. This was also a huge year for his nba life which has also attributed to this I believe. Scouts were really high on him coming into this year. Also a reason why he’s getting so mad out there and it’s bc he’s blowing his chance unfortunately and not helping his team at all

Gmac. Almost all our transfers are shooting worse than at their former schools from 3. Often when a shooter can’t find their shot, it’s because of their feet and sometimes their shoulders. I suspect we have nobody that can help with those elements. And after awhile it does affect your confidence.

It’s mystifying why they’re not running tons of off ball actions for get him open. The flare screen sets have worked well for him this season, but they don’t run them nearly enough. And there’s other sets they can be running.

Get him to the sports psychologist, stat!

Any scout that was high on Bell must of actually been high. I watched him in high school 3 years ago and came on this board and said at 65, he couldn't stay in front of me. He does nothing at all well other than get hot and shoot. The idea that he could play in the NBA is crazy. He can't guard anyone. He can't rebound. He has no handle. He can shoot. Not this year but that can change. He isn't near as good as Buddy or Cole.

As others have said, it gives the appearance of the yips and/or performance anxiety.

Basically, there's a "correct" way to think about performance mistakes; learn from them, but don't dwell on them. If you dwell on them--especially in the moment--it puts you in a headspace (confidence, anxiety, ego, whatever the case may be) where you're more likely to make another mistake, and that's a vicious cycle that can snowball pretty far. I instruct motorsport and see it there. We try to pick up on that in drivers, because if failures cascade in motorsport, it doesn't just risk slower times (aka missed shots), it risks dangerous crashes.

That said, I'm not a basketball coach and it's not something you can diagnose just going on what you see in games. I've no insider info on practice or their relationship and can't do more than speculate. It's just, there's been times when Red has seemed angry, and I'm sitting there wishing the attitude was more like "Forget that. Take a minute. You're a good shooter."

You don’t watch the nba. I watched the semi nba cup game today. Literally everyone makes open shots. everyone
Yep. Al Horford turned from a back-to-the-basket post-only guy into a dead-eye 3 point shooter.

I don't know that some folks here really watch the NBA. You gotta play D (unless you're Harden or Luka) and everyone hits 3s.

He's a set shooter who needs space to get his shot off, if he doesn't have that space he can't shoot. Last year Juda could beat his man and attack the basket getting Bell open, or 1/2 open looks. Brown would make hustle plays or grab offensive rebounds and kick it to Bell for open or half open looks. He has none of that this year unless Eddie make the pass from the post

You also had Q who could do the same. Carlos gets lost inside when he drives, and can't see over anyone to make a pass.
