How many of these guys will make an NBA roster?

Yeah ur probably right. Quite a bit better than Wes. I just don't see KJ getting by people, shooting over people and he's not a great shooter off the bounce. He needs to be set or get to the rim.

And not a great finisher - he misses his share of lay-ups.

Great for Kris if he gets a shot; I'd be surprised if he sticks with a team (but that'd be terrific if he does).

I watch the Knicks and if you look at the players on that team outside Melo/Chandler/Amare, you may lower your expectations as to what it takes to play in the NBA.

Sigh, this is unfortunately true.

Though even the majority of those guys were really damn good college players. As terrible as Bibby is now, he was a great college player. Though that may have been about 40 years ago.

Melo is a lock.

MCW as a smooth 6'5 PG will play in the league.

Waiters will make a roster.

KJ I think is a second round pick. His lack of handle really hurts him. He's not taking guys off the bounce in the NBA. I think he could make a team, maybe, or be a 10-day guy like Nichols. But I don't see him sticking.

CJ. Yup. CJ. If he's a legit 6'8 and works his ass off, isn't it possible he could be a Matt Barnes type player? Strictly grunt work, boards, def, rare 3? Yes he has work to do but isn't it possible? Or is he too slow, too limited?

Xmas is a mystery. As of now? No way. But who knows what kind of untapped potential there is? I don't see it yet, so I'll say no.

You aren't watching the same NBA I am. Melo is the only lock, next guys with the greatest potential are XMas and MCW because their young. Dion is a 30 year old sophomore with a questionable jump shot. Dion is a CBA All star, doesn't mean he isn't a great college player

I'm going to make a case for Scoop. You always read on the board that Scoop's biggest flaw is that he tries to do too much. He's much better when he's surrounded by talent and can have a clearly defined energizer role.

I think Scoop is wily enough that he could find himself towards the end of someone's bench and provide spot minutes as a third point guard. He's one of those guys that is at his best when he's the most limited guy on the floor, and I just have a hunch Scoop is going to surprise some NBA team and eke out a season or two as an 11th or 12th man.

yeah, they predict him in the first round mix, probably early 2nd because he is a senior, which will leave him fighting for a roaster spot next year! Amazing.

Joseph will NOT be working at Kenny Roger's Roasters next year. Mark it down.

Now, Popeye's?

its Melo.

maybe waiters.

and thats it.

although, mcw could if he gets bigger and gets a hell of lot better.

Agreed. I think people tend to underestimate how incredibly few available NBA roster spots there are.

Trice , melo, Williams, and Joseph will all be on an NBA roster some day. Williams will be a star.

I agree that Fab will most likely make one. He has the athleticism, size and the skills. I think Waiters has the next best shot, but not if he turns out to actually be 6'3" instead of what he's listed at now. The jury is still out on Christmas and Williams. As for the others, I think each (Fair, Southerland, Joseph, Keita, Triche, Scoop) will all get invited to NBA camps. But I don't think they get signed to anything more than a 10-game deal. As others have said, I do like Joseph. But to play small forward in the NBA, you really need to be a stronger scorer than he is. I imagine he'll play in the D-league or overseas. I think Scoop could do well somewhere like China where they will let foreigners take over games.

He's been in camp for the Jazz the past two years. He's getting a look, but not much. About the same as Paul Harris did.
Actually, if Harris didnt injure his ankle in camp, he probably would have made the team. He's also tearing up the D-League right now, had a triple double the other day.

Wes Matthews in some ways owes his opportunity in the NBA to Harris' injury.

What? Waiters isn't 30 he's 20. Waiters would get drafted top 20 if he keeps playing like this, and he doesn't start. Has someone come off the bench and gone in the first round before?

KJo has fallen in love with the jumper. He's not a good enough shooter/rebounder/defender to play in the league. He is just too slow in general.

lol at Fair. Come on.

Marvin Williams came off the bench for UNC in 2005 and went in the top 3.

:rolling:

"making a roster" is a pretty low bar. Mookie Watkins and Damone Brown have made NBA rosters, and there are several guys on this team better than them.

The real question is "how many guys on this team will play meaningful NBA minutes?" Answering that requires us coming up with a meaningful definition of "meaningful NBA minutes."

how about these standards:
How many players on the current SU roster will:
  • garner over 500 minutes of gametime in the NBA (Dave Johnson and Damone Brown fail this test)
  • appear in at least 50 games in any single NBA season
  • appear in at least 40 games in two or more NBA seasons (LeRon Ellis fails this test)
  • if a late first round pick, earn an NBA contract beyond their 3 year guarantee (Donte Greene will probably fail this test)
  • if a 2nd round pick, will earn a 2nd NBA contract of any length
This list is basically the Lawrence Moten standard. Moten passed every one of these tests (except of course the 1st round pick test). And, I think most of us would agree that Moten was a bare minimum NBA player. At least, most of us who watch the NBA.

So, how many guys on the current roster will have an NBA career as long as Lawrence Moten (parts of 3 seasons, 119 games, 1800+ minutes)?

Agree on the making the roster argument. If that is the only criteria, I see Melo, Waiters, MCW and Joseph. I have not seen enough of Cooney to draw any conclusion.

In reality the only guys that make it long term in the NBA are guys that are (a) extremely athletic and big, or (b) have some advanced skill set (Fredette, Reddick, Novak). For that reason these are the only 4 I see making it for any extended period (in that order).

I am not sure Kris will meet this criteria.

Honestly, at this point, I feel pretty confident Fab will do this, and reasonably confident Dion will. MCW; I see the potential and I see why people are saying yes on him, but tooe arly for me tosay.

I will add one Wild Card: Rakeem Christmas. He has an NBA body and NBA athleticism; I expect to see him make The Sophomore Leap next year, but it is too early to say whether he will put it together enough to become an NBA candidate.

Melo: lock to be drafted whenever he comes out. He's one of two guys with the most "upside" on the team.

Waiters: will likely play in the NBA. I see him being drafted around pick 20-30 in the first round if he keeps improving and stays in shape.

MCW: I absolutely believe he will be a first round pick, possibly lottery. He's Shaun Livingston 2.0, and without the injuries. Though, for the poster who said he might be the best passer in SU history, you're clearly too young to have ever seen Sherm or even Lazarus (who is my favorite SU player ever because of how much I loved his uncanny court vision).

Kris: MAYBE a first rounder, more likely a guy will get licked in the 35-45 range. I just don't think he's got a good enough all around skill set to make it. He's a decent, not great shooter. He's got a very average handle, and makes some bad decisions, and he tends to disappear. I've said it before and I'll say it again - if Todd Burgan never got a look (and his game was superior to Kris in virtually every aspect), I don't see how Kris will make it unless Burgan's attitude somehow put teams off.

Christmas - first, he's not as tall as listed. However, he's such a freak athlete that if his attitude and skills ever catch up to his athleticism he will be a lottery pick, top 20 pick at worst. IF being the key word.

CJ: I really hope he makes it or at least gets a long look. Paul Harris and Josh Pace both got looks, and not only is he 4 or 5 inches taller than either of them, I think by the time he's done he'll just be a flat out better player.

Triche: could get a look depending on how next season goes. The NBA values 6-4 guards who are built like tanks, but with him I think mentally he just might never be tough or assertive enough.

No one else on the current roster will garner consideration, though it remains to be seen with Cooney. He's stronger and almost as tall as Andy, he's more athletic, and I think he'll wind up being more productive.

I think people are underrating our talent actually.

We're used to only our stars making the Association. I think we're a different program now. Billy Celuck isn't walking through that door.

Other programs have guys that are immensely talented playing limited roles for them. I think we're one of those programs now. I see Fab, Waiters, Joseph, MCW, and Rak all making it (I'm fine with saying that just making an NBA roster counts). I think Fair and Scoop have an outside shot, and Triche, Dirty and Bad Mutha Keita with an outside(r) shot too.

I definitely thought about Rak, but like MCW, he's way too far away for me to feel comfortable saying he's going to be a pro.

Thoughts on the walk ons? You have to think a team like Sacramento has room for a guy with Nick Resavy's range.

I feel reasonably confident in stating that no current walk ons will ever play in the NBA.

Our walk ons, or any walk ons? Because there's a solid chance the #1 pick in this years draft will be a walk on.
