how many years do we have to pretend

What grade would you give him for last year?
I think Autry had a B season last year. We were never a threat to make the tourney, and we got curb stomped by most of the good teams we played (save for the UNC upset). But we won a good amount of games.

Issue is that last years team was far more talented. Judah, Q, Maliq are miles better than anyone we brought in (Freeman may be closest to them talent wise, and may better by seasons end).

And this edition is 100% Autry’s team. Everyone on the roster is someone he wanted.

His grade this year is an Eph. I have zero idea what we are even doing. Davis was dominating inside the entire second half and he felt like he needed to
put Lampkin in with 5 minutes to go and he promptly turned it over. Not calling a timeout at the end when Carlos and Taylor killed our last late possession with a chance to tie was ridiculous.

When a national program does not conduct a nationwide search for a new head coach, but hires from within, there is always room to second guess the strategy. Sometimes it works. And often times, it does not work. It is too early to draw conclusion in this instance.
Well done! I should've gone with the national search instead of the shower heads

It's reasonable to give it time and not say what we know is gonna happen

What did I do to deserve such a ridiculous statement. I'm not a mod. I didn't hurt your feeling by asking you a question, did I?
Oh no you failed a long time ago

You can't ask me to give grades, my answer was as inevitable as us doing another coaching search in a year or two

And why did Green say what he said? Because we haven't made his friends son a star. That is why. And that friends son, whose name is Chris Bell, will never be a star. If Brad Stevens or anyone else was coaching.
It wasn’t because they didn’t make Bell a star - no one is doing that but apparently Autry thought he could - it was because they weren’t running basic counter plays once NC State made an adjustment.

I don’t see anything positive about this team/program from bottom to top.

in fairness to me, not everyone can be an expert on football and basketball any other subject like you are. It's why you are the success you are.

I used to think even with the mediocre final JB years we were still an attractive job. We're moving into "sleeping giant" territory, though I still think we have the bones of great program.

I just can't reconcile that the same Athletic Director who saw the future and saw how important it was to move on from Dino and hire Fran could sit back and watch this happen to basketball.

How much money are we burning with the Dome serving as a mausoleum? Tickets, concessions, parking. We're throwing a millions of dollars by keeping the status quo. The university can't afford it.
The major problem with any time you replace a hall of fame coach with somebody he wants is now it seems harder to fire the guy immediately. After seeing this product it should be clear as day what needs to be done but he will get at least next season as well. It didn’t work when Dean smith retired, it didn’t work when John Thompson retired and it sure is hell ain’t working now.

I don't believe that was who jb wanted.

Flattery might work on less exceptional teachers but your grade is final

You do know I get to write a review on you as well. Believe me, no one is going to be taking your class going forward.

Red did very well last year so I don't think he will get fired just because this his 2nd year will end up being a huge letdown. He has a very good class coming in and if JJ misses a ton of games and we don't get Westry to be productive/useful, those could be viable excuses to give Red a break. But, we all know that whether it is professional or high level college sports, black coaches are kept on a short and tight leash, so Red needs to right this ship quickly. If next year's team does not make the tournament, he is definitely out.

And what point can we stop using Westry as a line?

It’s like Sidibe at this point.

He’s injured going forward. The likelihood of him being the player he was is slim and none. If he plays even at a playable level, it’s a bonus. He’s no longer an excuse

Another season after this one. Then we can move on.
I’m fine after this season. Leaders detect a problem and fix it. The honeymoon is over for a guy who never ever coached. Program is falling further down a cliff.

Go get Shaka smart or someone w the ability to build

“The hiring decision was fine”.

We were a top 20 program that did no outside search and promoted a guy who never was a HC before and was around for the final few years where the program was falling apart.

The hiring decision was lazy. We had NO OUTSIDE INTERVIEWS.

If JB left after back to back final 4s sure promote Red. But we were a disaster and Red was part of it. There were 100s of coaches that deserved this shot before him.

No one else was hiring Red unless it was a mid major: we handed him the job on a silver platter
I don't know if any mid majors that were serious about Autry??
I mean, I could have been the AD and made that promotion, it was a pretty easy trasaction

Why was Jb involved with the process he ruined su basketball the last ten years .three times on probation...should have done a national search and keep the problem out of the discussion

I would love Shaka Smart

Supposedly reasonable people lie about being agnostic on a coach who needs to get fired
gotta give him time to get his guys
install his own system
uphill battle for him, have you seen the shower heads , other schools have much better water pressure
bumps in the road learning on the job
is it time yet?
no not yet
ok gotta see how the young players grow it's all about development
is it time yet?
yeah now it can be said
well sure it was an obvious mistake and the writing was on the wall the whole time

Honestly, I felt the same way the last few years at the end of Boeheim's tenure, when some posters were expressing that they were good with him staying as long as he wanted to.

And the program is likely much worse off today than it was four years ago because of him hanging on, and then hiring the HCIW.

Let’s pretend JB retires before Buddy comes. We were 19-15 coming off an NIT appearance, the year before we made the Final 4.

Do we think JW definitely goes outside at that point? Why would it be different than 5 years later? I’m not sure why because JB held on too long we were stuck with someone on staff to take over? It makes no sense to me.

Not sure. Following up after a legend is always difficult.

But one way to suppress the chance of it going smoothly is to limit the candidate pool, and focus on the wrong evaluative criteria [such as ties to the program being essential vs. a "nice to have"], or hiring someone with no experience instead of a proven coach when the program needed a massive overhaul to get things back on track.

I'm guessing that at that point, with Hop doing well in Washington [at that point in time], and Wildhack being new, that he would almost certainly have gone outside the program and conducted a broad search. It would have been an early career defining hire -- and Wildhack would have felt less pressure to keep it in-house.

But to your point, we'll never know.

Wouldn’t Hop have been the coach?
