How much pull does Babers have RE: S&C

We need more conditioning as we were gassed in the 2nd quarter of the Florida State game.
Yep. I don't question his ability to get people strong. But from talking to people, conditioning seems to be a bit of an afterthought for him. So keep Hicks on as the "head S&C coach" and let him focus on the weight room, and bring in a great conditioning guy to get people fit and work on endurance.

If he ignores what appears to be 50% of his job, how can he be considered good?

Because he's great at getting people to max out. If you're great at 50% of your job, and below average at 50%, it balances out to "good" overall.

If conditioning is a problem now, wait until we start playing at Babers' tempo.

I'm not pro/against Hicks, but that is unacceptable to me.

If I had that rating at my job, I'd be put on a plan, and if I didn't improve, I'd be terminated.

If you have two responsibilities and you don't achieve an acceptable level of achievement and progress, that doesn't make you good, even if you are great at your other part. That makes your performance incomplete, not good.

Am I misreading this?

Keep in mind, I don't disagree with you at all. Just trying to find the reasoning for why former players all love him so much, in terms of his job performance.

Football players love being strong. They hate running.

Got it. Thanks for the info.

Which is probably why you see tons of support for Hicks from OL and DL guys.

What I'd like to see? Make Hicks the strength coach. Bring in someone else to teach conditioning. From what I gather, he barely emphasizes conditioning with his workouts, just focuses on getting guys strong. You need to have balance. Keep him around, but bring in at least an assistant S&C guy with an eye toward improving the conditioning aspect.
A dedicated conditioning guy make sense to me. That could be a win/win.

I remember how gassed we were v USF also

I've been told now that apparently, we do have guys on staff who are responsible for conditioning. Now, they just need to get the guys to stop sucking wind. Ha. A better offense could/should help that, of course.

The folks who suggest the reason why our kids get hurt is because of Hicks are insane. That has nothing to do with the SnC program Hicks has put in. Our best NFL athletes swear by teh guy and frequently visit him in the offseason. This, when they have access to any SnC program in the world they still chose Hicks.

Interesting...kids don't like vegetables usually either but they have to eat them. Looks like a lot of players are going to be playing cause it's going to get fast soon. The Dome on a 90 degree day in September ought to be something.

My only question

If he is so great and renowned, why is he still here?

Why did Marrone only take Luther?

Why hasn't a factory or NFL team made him an offer he cannot refuse?

Pure speculation but it is because he is great at strength and weak at conditioning.

I wonder if the word is out he may be canned, seems odd they are lobbying this hard for him out of nowhere. I hope Dino does whatever he thinks is best for the program and the current players and the schemes he wants to run, not for the alumni who have mostly been hot and cold. Remember these guys are going to be asked to go at a pace they never have gone before, the lineman will need to be in fantastic shape from a fitness level not just strength. It's a complete change over and Dino needs to do what is best for current team and players not alumni. In fact, it might be time for a change. Hicks had had a hell of a run.

Are we settling for "good"?
