Howard Washington Transfers to South Alabama

Without all the extracurriculars(Mom), think he would have stayed to get his degree, then grad transfer to play for a year somewhere else...

I think it was a very smart move on Howard's part. He was not going to see much if any playing time here. The way transfers are going this year he will likely be eligible to play right away this coming season and if he's done his homework will get tons of playing time, especially compared to what he would have gotten at SU. South Alabama seems like a strange choice, they either have a lot to offer as far as playing time or there might be some sort of connection to the staff.

After all he's been through and how much he wanted to be Orange...every Syracuse fan should be wishing Howard the best.

USA is losing its top assists guys.
So with his court sense he could be a real asset.
If he stays healthy and IF there's a season.

2nd in the Sun Belt last year. All 4 double digit scorers were seniors. Looks like a good fit for him he should play a lot. I'd have to imagine he could get a second year there given the medical issues.

on the syracuse basketball team i bet it's still pretty awesome. i would have taken that in a heartbeat.

It's fun if you can kinda set aside your actual desire to play, but it's also a ton of work that you know almost certainly will never be rewarded outside of getting to hang out with the guys and the perks that come from that.

I went through this same thing when I was deciding if I wanted to try to make it as a walk-on. I ended up deciding I just wouldn't be able to handle that mentally. One of my old high school friends ended up deciding the opposite and he made it and enjoyed the hell out of it. I think it would have driven me nuts personally though it undoubtedly would be a unique experience that not many people get to have.

Appreciate the perspective!

He was never getting PT competing against our HOF backcourt duo- you just had to play those other two studs a minimum 36 minutes per game!
Seriously though, he deserved better than he got here. For that i blame JB and his short bench fetish. And no, I still haven’t let it go. ;)

If he could hit an uncontested open jump shot he has a role.

Very small and physically just notACC level. Health issues probably hindered his ability to hit the weight room.

I was kinda hoping he would surface somewhere closer to home, but best wishes to him!

Shirt World is there to meet your needs.
Will I know the price for the shirts before or after checkout?

BTW, nice job on HW getting the transfer. Good luck and may you beat UConn and Georgetown in the NIT!

Ummm, no. He was getting spot duty at best. A couple minutes here & there. Too lazy to look it up but his most PT in a game had to be 10-15 mins maybe, w/ a lot of that being garbage time? So he goes 0-3 in spot duty and sits for 3 games in a row, gets in again goes 0-2 and it’s back to the bench? Meanwhile, JG3 is hoisting 30 fters at will and playing to exhaustion, and w/ little repercussions.
Really didn’t wanna beat this dead horse but Stevie Wonder could see where he stood on this team. I just feel JB’s philosophy a’la nurturing/developing his bench has over the years, been very lacking. JMHO.
Good luck to H.W. .

On the one hand, in terms of being a traditional “pure PG”, he looked like one of the best we’ve had in awhile from the standpoint of being a steady ball handler and good decision maker who makes the right passes and looks for people. So from that standpoint it’s a shame he didn’t work out here because I don’t think we’ve had a really good “traditional, pure PG” since Ennis. I liked the way he looked from a “knowing how to play” standpoint.

Maybe you’re right that he just never got enough consistent minutes/shots to get in the flow.

But it’s also possible that he’s just not much of a shooter/scorer and that’s why he 1)didn’t shoot much 2) shot a poor % 3) didn’t play much.

Time will tell.

IF it turns out he just flat out can’t really shoot/score at this level, then he was probably used appropriately. We’ll see.

Howard Washington had no business getting real minutes for Syracuse. I vividly remember at the end of the VT win they were blatantly ignoring him when we were on offense. HoWa not getting burn wasn’t because JB doesn’t like to play his bench, it’s because he’s not an ACC-level basketball player.

I like the kid and I hope he can be a solid mid-major starter but I don’t think it’s fair to say he deserved better than he got here.

After such a completely disappointing season, except the last game, I’m still shocked people hold these views.

I was as let down last season as anyone else here but, in my opinion, giving HoWa more minutes wasn’t the answer. Having a 3rd guard who is an ACC-level talent is the answer (hopefully Kadary this season)

Thats fine but everything else but shooting and size looked good. We also haven’t been great last few years. Hit a single open jumper play more minutes simple as.

No, giving buddy and joe more minutes infinitely improved our defense. hope JB ignores the new guards as well this year.
