Hubert Davis Seat is Less Hot Than Autry on 2/12/2025

This all sounds good to me and very Fran like.

Here’s what some pretty well-known people in the sport thought of that hire (the comments are posted on the school’s website):

Oats: “Bryan is not only one of the top recruiters in the country, but he is also a terrific coach who understands the game. He brings a lot of passion and energy in everything he does, which has played a big part in our success at the University of Buffalo and University of Alabama.”

Jay Bilas, ESPN: “Bryan has taken the hard path to success, and has overcome every obstacle in his way. He is smart, well trained, and fundamentally sound in every area of the game. What really stands out to me is his strong, close connection to his players. Bryan coaches, teaches and cares about the whole person.”

Herb Jones, New Orleans Pelicans guard: “Coach B breeds confidence in his players and puts them in position to be successful.”

Seth Greenburg, ESPN: “He has been an integral part of rebuilding two college basketball programs. His knowledge of the game and his ability to teach, communicate and connect with players sets him apart. He has an infectious personality, a network of contacts and a work ethic second to none.”

Anybody seen Wildhack lately? He seems to be pretty quiet since football ended.

I'm anticipating some statement about the program or giving Autry a vote of confidence but that it still hasn't came makes me wonder. Either he's watching how things unfold or he has his hands tied and is just trying to keep his head in the sand. It's probably nothing and maybe it's too soon for the vote of country confidence that will be announced at seasons end.

National recruiting experts said Freeman was going to Alabama until it was clear Hodgson was leaving his assistant coach position. He was his lead recruiter and Freeman loved him.

I wonder if Donnie goes where Hodgson goes this offseason??

I'm sick of hearing outside the Cuse family talk. After almost 50 years of Boeheim, the only viable HC candidates have been Autry (stinks), Hopkins (stunk), Gmac (tbd), and Jason Hart.

Having a Cuse connected candidate suggest there's a huge network when really that is not the case. It's just not a thing to me personally and is incredibly limiting.

Wow. This guy is going to be someplace big next season. Probably someone we get boatraced by, alas.

I think there is a big misconception that just because Red is let go that means Anthony is no longer coming to Syracuse I don't believe that is the case. I think the Anthony's would be coming to Syracuse regardless of who the coach is.
That thinking kind of took on a life of it's own because of one particular poster, which seemed to be a case of belief without evidence, as Dino would say. And even if that was true, I watched Rutgers vs Iowa last night. Based on their season, not sure you should let a recruiting class dictate a major decision.

It seems from all the insiders we are stuck with Red for at least another year, so we need to just grin and bear it.
If everyone leaves the program - and there was massive turnover last year - that speaks volumes about the coach.

We cannot win more than 15 games with some awesome recruits and third-tier transfers based on what we've seen - from our coaching staff - the past two years.

Yeah, Rutgers is a great example of that. I watched that game as well. Bailey and Harper couldn't stop the Sandfordt bros!

Thelwell wasn't even playing...and Iowa still bested Rutgers' lottery pick lineup. lol

Wow! Pretty damming remarks. Can’t say I can argue with anything they said. I feel bad for Red because he cares and is a good guy, but it’s a results driven sport. I have to say I’d be shocked if SU fired him, but they have to be very uneasy at the moment.
I don’t feel bad for someone making millions a year to coach college athletes to put a ball in a hoop/stop the other team from putting a ball in the hoop.

I used to feel that way, until I realized I make a fraction of a fraction of what AA makes and if I don’t perform at my job I’m going to be canned.

Every job is and should be graded based on results provided.

But you still have to buyout our coach. Not happening.
I read somewhere on this board that Red's contract is 5 years at $3 mil per year. Is that true? SU would owe Red $9 mil if they fired him?

No one on this board knows the details of the contract and no one at SU would share those. So, who knows. The only thing that is hinted at is firing Red would have A cost associated with it and that SU is generally conservative with money.

It is not $3M and it is not 5 years. Will SU change course after this disaster of a season? I wish, but I doubt it. Would Kayan go elsewhere, I doubt it. If Melo is OK w/ Autry, he would be OK w/ anybody.

I still don't understand the Hodgson love affair. I am not saying he is a bad coach but any stretch, but what exactly has he done to make him a sure fire P4 coach? Win 20 games last year?

I get Ark St is 9-3 in conference and in first place, but there are FIVE teams at 8-4 right on their heels. This Ark St team could easily finish middle of the conference. This is who you want to throw all your resources at?

Look at Pat Kelsey's and Nate Oats' resumes compared to Hodgson before they made the jump.

Kelsey at Winthrop and Charleston won their conference regular season multiple times, and brought both schools to the NCAA tournament twice.

Oates made 3 NCAA tournaments with Buffalo, and won a game in the tournament twice.

I need to see way more before crowning Hodgson the savior of Syracuse basketball.
I love Hodgson’s upside, but sure he might be a bit risky because he doesn’t have much of a track record yet. As you pointed out, Kelsey and Oats were proven commodities at the mid major level and had been to the NCAA tourney multiple times. You could also put Danny Hurley in that box. But on the other hand, we could be getting him before he really blows up. I like that bet.

I also like Ben McCollum at Drake, who’s won National championships (albeit in D2).
