I don't know what to think. Certainly we beat ourselves. Maybe we are just not as good as I had thought (read that as "hoped") we were. Maybe the staff has some problems. Perhaps, growing pains? Perhaps, just not up to it? Not sure.
MD is a lousy defense and we put up almost 600 yards and 13 point plus 7 in garbage time. We give up a blocked punt on a play when the blocker came in totally unaccounted, a pick six due to miscommunication on a route, a TD called back for holding (Foy). We actually went from the 8 backwards to the 33 and then finally missed a FG from the 25 to end the half. We had two turnovers and they had none.
Against a poor secondary Hunt goes 14-28 for 219, no TD's and one 88 yard pick 6. There were at least three "drops" in the first half but Hunt overthrew several open receivers in the second half. He kept expecting Estime to sit down in the seam of the zone and Bris keep crossing resulting in passes behind him.
358 yards rushing but it is good when your QB is the leading rusher? Something suspect about that. Oh yes, and a fumble.
What is clear is that we play an aggressive gambling defense and we are vulnerable to being burned on big plays - just like today. Our secondary can't play press coverage against top line receivers. We got beat at least three time more today that were overthrown.
Bullough doesn't seem to have the knack of game planning although he does adjust - sometimes. This team is not disciplined and makes too many glaring errors - perhaps, they will improve as the season goes along. I hope so.
If this is Hunt's limit we are in big trouble. Against teams with good DB's we will see stacked boxes and spies on Hunt for the rest of the year. If Broyld has an ACL and is out for the year that is also big trouble.
We are probably going to have to win four of our last five games to go bowling. I think we are better than Wake and I don't think NCS, Pitt and BC are as good as people think. It is not Mission Impossible, but it may be damn close.
Good programs do not lose games like this against mediocre teams at home. Very disappointing.
