Having traveled there, I have a new appreciation for them. The first trip, in 2005, I thought their fans were as classy as any I've ever encountered. Liked their whole production, playing the SU fight song over the speaker at the end of the stadium that opposing fans enter. Then their band learns our fight song and plays it both before and after the game, thought that was cool. The second trip in 2008 was a little different, because their fans were so angry with Weiss, it was the snowball game. But still, treated SU fans (at least me) with respect. One of the only places I can think of where I couldn't name at least 20 fans who I hoped were forced to sleep outside because of how douchy they were. I also thought it was cool how they let cuseregular stay at the game after his, well, breaking of team rules.
Having said that, South Bend is an uninteresting, strip mall, sh!thole in the middle of nowhere, and I don't know how anyone gets through 4 years at that school with any sanity left.
As far as them being independent and only looking out for themselves, let's be honest. They do it because they can. And we all wish we could too. Those that can't are equally greedy, they're just forced into a conference to do it. So they keep moving around to find a better deal. That's the sport, so like or leave it.
I hope they beat Alabama, because I find SEC fans to be inexplicably insecure, which also makes them challenging to be within 500 yards. The horror of losing to ND in a championship game will probably increase the suicide rate in that state. At that point, it might just be natural selection.
