I don't get the ND hatred here...

I grew-up watching ND replays on Sunday mornings with Lindsy Nelson and Paul Hornung.

Gradually I learned to dislike them because of all the hype.

Then, in 1987, I learned to hate them to the bone.

  1. They are French not Irish (liars)(not a fan of the French nor are they fans of my type of people)
  2. Arrogance
  3. Cover up of rapes (Penn St. kind of scandal somewhere in their history would not surprise me)
  4. Cover up of murder
  5. Ishaq at 4 AM
  6. Media bias
  7. Skip Holtz
  8. Football Jesus
  9. Brian Kelly
  10. Did I mention Skip?
  11. Freaking Stupid Leprechaun is the most obnoxious mascot
  12. History of ND jumping teams when the team won against a ranked opponent and ND played an unranked opponent
  13. Jack Cooley
  14. Mike Brey
  15. Did I mention Skip or Brian
  16. ND fans
  17. Not joining a conference in football and getting away with it
  18. The fact that during playoff being set up, 10 other ADs and then NDs, if they don't join a conference then why should they be there?
  19. Jimmy Clausen
  20. Golden Tate
  21. Jaron Jones
Do I need anything else?

Gody...I don't like his face.

Tim Brown and Paul Hornung winning the Heisman are two reasons.

Yes, yes , yes ... what you said is correct.

But the idea of SU being the "antithesis" or "opposite" of ND because it was founded by another religious denomination stretches the definition of antithesis beyond anything I've ever heard.

The two schools are hardly "opposites" and that's what "antithesis" means. Both are private universities founded by religious institutions that are both members of the same athletic conference for all sports but football. They are similar in size. Do these two schools seem opposite to you?

A better case for an antithesis for ND or SU might be Army or Navy (i.e. US Government schools designed exclusively to train military officers)... but even then there are so many similarities.
You used the word "antithesis". I just repeated it--probably a mistake on my part.

On the history side, you must know that the Catholic/Protestant thing has been ongoing for centuries.. But, that's off the track.

My problem with ND and its fans is the attitude that "our place is not only different from yours, but it's also better". And, that's simply not true. More than a few D-I FB schools have comparable or even higher academic standard--Stanford, Duke, BC, Northwestern, GaTech, etc. And, if you're talking about academics only, the Ivies, Patriot League schools, and just about every Jesuit college beats them.

Until this season, their football program has lagged, although with the way the SEC schools play the admissions and eligibility game, many other programs have fallen behind also.

What ND does have is a PR machine par excellence. From Grantland Rice to Red Smith to Rudy to the current-day ink-stained wretches, many flowery paeans have been sung to the Fightin' Irish. And speaking of wretch--listening to Dickie V do the UK-ND game last week made me want to.

I'm not talking about bumping into Joe Schmo on the street. I'm talking about the media love affair with them. How many times the last 10+ years have they been ranked high when they hadn't proven anything only to get waxed by a good team in a bowl? Fan base loyalty and enthusiasm shouldn't be reflected in the polls where the "experts" are supposed to try and be objective.

How many to we did a highly ranked (and by highly I mean high for us) get waxed on national television?

But that's still not the point. The point is they deserve the contract they have with NBC because that is what they are capable of drawing.

If you are talking about media rankings...well ND isn't alone I that camp. That's just the nature of polls.

I never mentioned the NBC contract. I'm talking about how in the midst of a 7-5 or 6-6 season, of which they've had plenty recently they can sneeze and the highlight makes it on sportcenter.

I have no problem with Notre Dame. In fact, I tend to root for them if they're involved in a game that has no effect on Syracuse. I guess because I grew up loving the movie Rudy.

My problem is with their fans. Check that - fans of Syracuse basketball and Notre Dame football. Unless your last name is McNamara, that just shouldn't be allowed.

The biggest reason I don't like them is their insanely ridiculous fan base ... honestly fans of certain teams can make you hate that team more than the team itself.

I know you didn't. I did.

And what you don't like is their popularity. When they sneeze, a lot of people care. If SU hoops had that kind of attention, people would love it.

I'm not saying this is you (just happens to be in our discussion), but what IMO most people hate ND for is the attention they get (in many ways because they are envious).

When you talk to people that have been to South Bend (I have personally never been), all you hear is great fan base, knowledgeable, respectful, etc. I don't have any reason for wanting to see ND succeed, but I certainly hate them and actually have a bit more respect for them than other programs (UCONN, ND, USC, MINN, and the list goes on).

CTO is right, the hate for them isn't really that understandable IMO.

My hatred for ND will live or die when/if they choose a conference. If they end up in the B10, it will mean everything they said and stood for was BS. They could have joined them ages ago and avoided screwing all the current and future schools they associate with.

Beyond their self-perceived elitism & privileged entitlement, genuinely my sentiment as well.

ND brought absolutely nothing to the table for the BE, other than fulfilling their own benefit/need, a home and revenue stream for their troubled olympic sports programs. Their hoops prior to was, for the most part, irrelevant and struggling immensely. The BE threw them a life line, in hope that they would commit to them for football one day, which, of course, they never had any intentions of doing. In my view, the ACC has now fallen for the same bait as well. Just like that hot chick that strings you along knowing darn well she'll never let you into her pot of gold, either will the fabled leprochaun that is ND.

What's the saying...fool me once (BE) shame on you, fool me twice (ACC) shame on me.

What gets me partially is ND's adacious behavior, however, as in any negotiation, you can't get what you don't ask for. Moreover, is that they have been able to subsequently convince/persuade the other party to allow them to have one's cake and eat it too.
